After rising from the depths of relative anonymity, it seems as though Chan Gailey has emerged as one of the top candidates for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. Even though there's only two candidates to my knowledge, it still raises certain questions.
Most know that Chan Gailey is an offensive based coach, and has been for quite some time. But would he be the right hire for the Bills? Let's take a look at the man that is Chan Gailey.
From 1971 to 1973, Gailey was a quarterback for the University of Florida. Just one year out of school, he became a graduate assistant for the school's football program for the next two seasons. Then in 1976, Gailey got his first real coaching gig.
Troy State University hired Gailey to be the defensive backs coach oddly enough, even though his background was geared toward the offensive side of the ball. He stayed there for three seasons before being offered the same job at a bigger school: Air Force. He served as defensive backs coach in 1979 and 1980, and was then named defensive coordinator in 1981. He stayed at that position with the school for two years before getting his first big offer.
In 1983, Troy State came calling again, and offered Gailey the head coaching position. Gailey stayed there for two seasons, finishing his 1984 campaign with the Trojans with a 12-1 record. That as it turns out, was all the NFL needed to see.
The following season Gailey was hired by the Denver Broncos as their special teams and tight ends coach. In his tenure with Denver, Gailey rose from tight ends coach to receivers coach, receivers coach to quarterbacks coach, and then in 1989 he was named the Broncos offensive coordinator. He spent two seasons in that position, where the team ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing in 1989, and eighth in total offense in 1990. In his six years with the Broncos, they made the Super Bowl three times.
After that, Gailey decided to try his hand at head coaching again, this time at a semi-professional level. He elected to fill the vacancy with the Birmingham Fire of the World League of American Football. The team made the playoffs in both seasons under Gailey, but they lost in the first round of the playoffs both times. A trend that wouldn't cease to exist for Gailey. More on that later. But the league only lasted those two seasons, especially with their rule of a variable field goal point value based on yardage of kick.
Before hooking back on with the NFL, Gailey had a one year stint with Samford University in 1993, where he led the Bulldogs to a 5-6 record.
He then hooked on with Bill Cowher's staff in Pittsburgh. Starting as the Steelers wide receiver's coach for 1994 and 1995, Gailey was then named the team's offensive coordinator in 1996. In two seasons at that post, the Steelers ranked second in the NFL in rushing in 1996, then topped the league's rankings in that category in 1997. That final season was his most productive, and it led to his biggest break yet.
Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys came calling. In 1998 Gailey was named the head coach of the Cowboys. He lasted two seasons there. In his first season, the Cowboys won the NFC East and ranked eighth in the NFL for total offense. In 1999, Dallas had a record of 8-8, and Gailey's offense was sixth in rushing.
But I told you that playoff thing would come back, and here it is: the Cowboys lost in the first round of the playoffs both years. After that, the Cowboys and Jones decided it would be best if the two sides went their separate ways.
That was the high point of Gailey's coaching career, because past that his resume just hasn't been all too impressive. After losing the Dallas job, Miami hired him to assume the offensive coordinator responsibilities. But in his two seasons, the Dolphins could never get their offense going. In 2000, the Dolphins ranked 26th in total offense. It didn't get much better in 2001, ranking 21st in the NFL in that category.
But the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets saw what they wanted in their next head coach in Gailey. For the next six years, he would lead the Ramblin' Wreck to being slightly above average. These were the records of all six Gailey led teams: 7-6 (2002), 7-6 (2003), 7-5 (2004), 7-5 (2005), 9-5 (2006), 7-6 (2007). Not once did Georgia Tech finish in the final Top 25 poll in those six seasons, and they also went a whopping 0-6 against rival Georgia under Gailey.
In his last coaching stint, Gailey joined the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator in 2008. With a cast that had the likes of Tyler Thigpen running the offense, the Chiefs ranked 16th in rushing, 20th in passing and 24th in total offense.
Then with Herm Edwards relieved of his duties as head coach, the gong would soon ring for Gailey. At first, new coach Todd Haley kept Gailey on his staff, although he stripped him of his play calling duties. With only one preseason game left in 2009, Haley and the Chiefs fired him.
So what did I learn in this Chan Gailey discovery?
1) He sets up the pass by running the football, and a lot.
2) He can't win playoff games.
3) There was such a thing as the World League of American Football.
So the question remains, is he the right man for the job? Only time can tell that.
But what I can say is that one word strikes me after looking at the profile of Chan Gailey, and it just so happens to be the same word that you can use to describe the Buffalo Bills...
Mediocrity.
Gailey's head coaching window should have closed a long time ago, but apparently Ralph Wilson, Buddy Nix, Russ Brandon and the rest at One Bills Drive are enamored with the idea of Gailey as head coach. Either that, or they can't convince anyone else to take the job.
Who cares? If this the best the Bills can do at GM and Coach? I can only imagine the garbage they can attract in free agency.
01/18/2010 11:47PM
W-T-F!!!
Ralph, are you f'n serious?!!. There has got to be someone from the Bills organization that can take over the decision making department, because this man is clearly suffering from dementia.
01/18/2010 11:57PM
WHAT A JOKE!!
This is the guy you get to renew belief in the fans???
01/19/2010 12:01AM
Mediocrity
Give someone else a chance who would likely strive beyond continuing the 7-9 seasons
01/19/2010 12:02AM
Stupid
There goes the NFL ticket next year. I will not watch another Bills game if this happens!!!
01/19/2010 12:08AM
The Golden Boys are BACK@
No Marv BUT you have Ralph, Buddy, and Chan
01/19/2010 12:09AM
Why not me?
I can guarantee no playoffs or a winning season. Can I put my name in the hat?
01/19/2010 12:11AM
PAY ME!! I WILL DO IT
Give me 3-4 million per season to just get fired for being mediocre
01/19/2010 12:14AM
Where's the o -fence
Chiefs were horrible and so was the dolphins but he did do a good job in the rushin game in Kansas city it was Larry Js break out year and Larry became horrible after he lefted the chiefs have a lil faith b-lo at least he'll help Freddy Mel kiper quote on espn saying Jimmy c to buff at 9 overrall
01/19/2010 12:50AM
What Is This?
League of Extraordinarily Old Gentlemen? This isn't a draft for best bingo player, it's the NFL.
Looks like another season of not wasting my time with this joke of a franchise. The days of Jim Kelly & Co. are long gone.
01/19/2010 12:51AM
what do you expect!
Did you really expect anything different? Ever since Marv Levy left the team the Bills have been nothing more than average. The Bills were the first team to fire their coach in the league, and probably the last to hire a coach unless unpredictable Al Davis finally decides to fire Cable. Names like Cowher, Shanahan, Billick, and even Marty Schottenheimer were brought up, but deep down did you really think we were going to land one of them? Even the Bills surprised us this time, by hiring a guy whos been fired by every team he has recently coached. Again, leave it up to the Bills to hire someone who couldnt even make through training camp as the Chiefs offensive coordinator. With the recent draft picks, and roster moves, and now the hiring of Chan Gailey, Ralph Wilson and the front office must truly think they are outsmarting the rest of the league.
01/19/2010 1:21AM
Another established loser
The good new is, he already has a web site devoted to his firing: www.firechangailey.com
01/19/2010 1:35AM
Get the U-haul
If they hire this guy they might as well start moving the equipment to LA
01/19/2010 2:30AM
DO NOT BUY TICKETS!
Chan Gailey- please everyone don't support this team at all!!!
01/19/2010 3:06AM
He is default coach #14
No one wants the job and I mean NO ONE at all. Not A list coaches with head coaching and super bowl experience, not B list coaches with head coaching experience, not C list coaches and rising coordinators, not D list college coaches that are ready to make the jump to the pros, not E list "diamond in the rough" coaches/coordinators, just F listers and that sums up the Bills franchise now. No more hope, no future to look forward to, and no excitement. This franchise is officially dead. Thanks Ralphie, congratulations you ran the entire franchise in the ground.
01/19/2010 3:29AM
Don't get fooled again Bills fans....
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
01/19/2010 3:37AM
Good God - NO
AT least go for Barry Switzer that coached Dallas to a Superbowl. Geesuz Gailey??? Sell this pile of Garbage-Disaster-Franchise. Please!
01/19/2010 4:14AM
hey
I think wgr550 should post a link to OLD MAN WILSON'S email so we all can tell him how we feel about his poor ownership skills then just maybe then he will finally get it...
01/19/2010 5:46AM
Cant
Be careful with "CANT" win a playoff game. He "HASNT". He's only had 2 cracks at it.
01/19/2010 6:05AM
HE'S BAAACKKK!!!!
We just hired Dick Jauron again!!!
01/19/2010 6:20AM
THIS SUCKS..!!!
i've got nothing to say....WTF
01/19/2010 6:25AM
Back up the Mayflower van
Bills are leaving soon.
01/19/2010 6:28AM
Insanity? No, the Bills.
This is the new low. Brian Billick won a Super Bowl and wants the job. Give it to him.
01/19/2010 6:38AM
the song remains the same
did anyone expect anything different???? your a idiot if you really really thought it would change, names are different results will be the same.i hope all the mouths that say there gonna stay away from getting there tickets, actually get up the guts to doso...enough is enough i dropped my season tixs when they hired mularkey, and i wont be going anytime soon.
01/19/2010 6:47AM
Maybe!?!?!?
The fact all of the local "football experts" on this board seem to be against Gailey tells me something.
They all liked Williams, Mularkey and Jauron when they were hired, so maybe they'll be wrong again.
01/19/2010 7:03AM
Definition of retread
Chan Gailey is perfect, a weak option that won't rock the boat
01/19/2010 7:04AM
Retread 2.0
More uninspiring decisions from One Bills Drive. Until Ralph realizes he's not a football genius, hires solid management and gives them POWER, this organization will be viewed as a joke. Of course, when that happens, will Ralph's kids have already executed Powers of Attorney and shipped the team to LA? They should change the team name to the Ralphs while he's still around, 'cause that's all I want to do when I watch this mess of a team.
01/19/2010 7:08AM
Hurray...
.... FOR THE BILLS... NOT!Let the Downfall begingagain and the middle of the pile mediocraty continue! WOOOO
01/19/2010 7:21AM
Terminal Bills
Hospice has been called my Zubaz wearing friends.
01/19/2010 7:39AM
The Chiefs Fired Him, Nuff Said
Come on guys, don't you know? Chan "interviewed well". And as we all know, the interview and not actual accomplishments is the best way to pick a coach in the NFL. After all, Gregg Williams, Mike Malarkey and Dick Jauron also all "interviewed well".
Good grif, not again. *sigh*
01/19/2010 7:42AM
Wade was 29-19
Makes you long for the days of Wade Phillips, doesn't it?
01/19/2010 7:53AM
Buffalo Bills leave for LA
What will be the fans complaints when the Buffalo Bills leave town???? Oh I know they will complain about why the Bills left town right!!! Hey thats what the Bills fans want right!!!! give me a break complainers!!!!
01/19/2010 7:54AM
Typo
Ralph's secretary must have had a typo. Instead of typing "Hire Coach Chin" she typed "Hire Coach Chan"! What a joke, at least we have the Sabres.
01/19/2010 7:57AM
Lowest of the Low
They're not just a canadian band anymore folks. They're the Buffalo Bills front office.
01/19/2010 7:59AM
Im Done!
They hire this guy I'm through with the Bills!
01/19/2010 8:00AM
What the..
Ralphy must be trying to piss the fans off so much that we wont care if they move. He might as well give Mr. NO-PULSE JAURON another shot. Damn it sucks to be a Bills fan (most of the time)
01/19/2010 8:16AM
F my life
someone tell me why i waste my money on tickets to see the Bills, or waste a whole afternoon whacthing them on T.V., i'm goin to ask myself this"what have they done for me lately"..heres what i came up with!NOTHING..i have made up my mind, im done with the Bills..like Rauph im giving up!
01/19/2010 8:20AM
The current state of the team...
Face reality. This franchise is so damaged because of its leadership, starting with the owner that no one wants this job. Buffalo fair or not, has become the worst NFL city and no one wants to come. Fans are probably the best which is what really stinks.
01/19/2010 8:21AM
MODRAK & GUY ARE STILL HERE SO IT DOESN'T MATTER EITHER WAY
Not even Bill Cowher could succeed with idiots like Modrak and Guy picking the players. This organization is a national embarrassment and never stops insulting the fans.
01/19/2010 8:22AM
Finally
Finally i can say i totaly lost respect for the bills..thank you mr wilson i can finally become a new fan for another team prolly inthe NFC and who knows it could even be Detroit..its pretty sad when the Loins have more of an up side then the Bills
01/19/2010 8:27AM
see ya!!
i hope all the Buffalo Fans enjoyed NFL Football while it lasted!! UFL Buffalo Coming Soon!!
01/19/2010 8:30AM
Franchise Sunk
We're doomed. This is the ultimate death of our beloved team.
01/19/2010 8:33AM
???
Tell me i have"nt woken up yet and this is just a night terror please
01/19/2010 8:36AM
Re: Lowest of the Low
Unlike the Bills' front office, the members of that Canadian band actually have quite a bit of talent...but I digress...
01/19/2010 8:40AM
........................
I'm excited....NOT. Go away Bills.
01/19/2010 8:48AM
Did you know....
Chan Gailey was Dallas' Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach for the 1998 and 1999 seasons?
Dallas was 6-10 in 1997 and 10-6 in 1998?
Dallas lost Michael Irvin to a career ending injury in 1999 after 3 games?
Dallas still made the playoffs in 1999?
Chan Gailey isn't going to be our offensive coordinator?
I'm indifferent to this hiring. The real impact comes when we hire the coordinators. If you don't want to support the Bills anymore, don't. If you ask yourself that question to begin with, you probably shouldn't. That not for me though.
01/19/2010 8:55AM
Give me a break
you people cant form your own opinion because you have no idea who chan gailey really is, so you listen to all the experts and follow them down whatever road the want to lead you, wait till the dust settles, see what kind of coaching staff he assembles, what the draft holds for them...THEN FORM YOUR "OWN" OPINION....what a bunch of lemmings!!!!
01/19/2010 9:00AM
who was beating down chans door?
if you were taking this long just to hire this stiff, why not just wait till after the superbowl and talk to everyone else??? did anyone even call fassel Or beileck? out of a list of 100 guys i would hire he(gailey) would be 101...putzzz's
01/19/2010 9:11AM
Not Surprised
Count me among those who are not surprised, but terribly disappointed if this hiring comes about. The fact that it has taken this long to hire anybody and given the number of quality coaches who have turned down the Bills, we should have expected this.I all but gave up on the Bills last season. The hiring of Gailey will put me over the edge. No more game tickets, no more merchandise, no more wasted Sunday afternoons. Goodbye, Buffalo Bills.
01/19/2010 9:43AM
6 and 10 or 7 and 9
What's the diff, the sames type of coach the same results, never make the playoffs, nobody wants the job, nobody cares...why do you guys still support this team...you;re a bunch of Leaf fans in disguise, like sheep! baaahhhhh!
01/19/2010 9:48AM
Another losing season!
We should go back to Dick Jouron.
01/19/2010 10:00AM
Who is Chan Gailey?
The next man to fail as Bills head coach under the leadership of Ralph Wilson, who believes Tom Modrak and John Guy deserve a lifetime pass with zero consequences for a decade of losing.
01/19/2010 10:58AM
2 Words
WHAT??????NO!!!!!!!
01/19/2010 11:15AM
Give him a chance
Too much negativity here. Gailey may be the answer.
01/19/2010 12:03PM
Mediocrity Opposites
So we go from a coach that was 14-18 to a coach that goes 18-14. At least they are going for the winning side of mediocrity. Get your popcorn ready.
01/19/2010 12:06PM
Fans keep blocking Wilson's master plan
It's obvious Ralphy is try to keep fans out of the stadium so it'll be easier for him to move the Bills. But it's so hard when the stadium is full every Sunday. Maybe this move will help?
01/19/2010 12:34PM
Sabres
GO SABRES!
01/19/2010 12:53PM
Disappointed but hey you never know
I don't believe that Marv Levy's resume looked all that great when he came here. And Bill Belichek's career as a head coach was dismal before going to New England. I can't say I am happy about this choice but only time will tell. Personally for myself, I am a life long Bills fan, even if they hire Mickey Mouse to coach the team. If you ask me, the team's future is in the hands of the GM. Bill Polian made this franchise in the Kelly days. Let's see what Buddy Nix can do.
01/19/2010 1:07PM
Did they call?
Did they bother to talk to that young dynamic head coach at Boise State?
01/19/2010 1:15PM
hell
I wont buy seasons tickets again. Not until we get a new coach
01/19/2010 1:22PM
sad, sad downward spiral
How much more do we have to take as fans? Ralph, will the team to the city when you go and we will make you proud.
01/19/2010 1:42PM
Good analysis Bad Conconclusion JB
CG has great credentials having 30 plus years of coaching both the offensive and defensive side of ball. Good OC mind too. If he can bring in good coordinatores this will work. Bright guy who holds players responsible. get him some good players and we have a decent chance. Calling him mediocre is mediocre journalism.
01/19/2010 1:47PM
another yes man
well what did you think we were going to hire someone that would want to win, that might cost money,lol..
01/19/2010 2:02PM
unreal
Get the brown bags out.
01/19/2010 10:32PM
Twilight Zone
YOU ARE NOW ENTERING THE TWILIGHT ZONE KNOWN AS THE BUFFALO BILLS. Yes, the way Ralph Wilson and company operate compared to all other teams except for the Raiders this is officially the twilight zone of the NFL. Harbaugh basically told them to f*** off how much you want to bet he signs with the Raiders by the end of this week after Cable gets booted out. Really? Jerry Jones regrets firing Chan Gailey? LMAO!! Then again Jerry Jones will be right there with Al Davis and old Ralphie boy in the land of the misfit toys within the next 5-10 years. Hell hes already more than halfway there. Not what I would call a ringing endorsement at all for Gailey coming from Jerry Jones.
01/20/2010 4:06AM
Another 3 years
3 more years of bad football before they fire him. At least we have the Sabres!!
01/20/2010 9:05AM
EOE
To address the question, "Who is Chan Gailey?"...sounds like a Chinese cross-dresser, showing that the Bills are truly and equal opportunity employer.
01/20/2010 10:12AM
the Bucaneers of the New Millenium
I always wondered how Tampa fans felt during the 80's & 90's, I guess now I know.
01/20/2010 10:56AM
No more...
tickets will be purchased by me. You can count on that for sure Ralph. No luck needed there you old codger.
01/20/2010 3:40PM
Why did they bother firing Jauron
Why? Please tell me why they even bothered to fire Dick Jauron? So that standing on the horizon is Chan Gailey? They put it out there that they were going to put up 10 million for the big names. "Whatever it takes." Remember that line? They conducted the coach search the same as the GM. They didn't even consider Billick or Marty Schottenheimer before settling on Gailey. Modrak and Guy are still here. So again why did they even bother to fire Jauron if they ultimately were going to hire Chan Gailey and make no other changes?
01/20/2010 11:14PM
Reliving a failure
If I'm not mistaken...didn't this guy mentor Mike Mularkey in Pittsburgh? If I'm wrong please confrim that because we all know how Mularkey turned out...you can probably see where I'm going with this.
