Bills' Marrone: Byrd getting "closer and closer"

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- Two weeks in, the Buffalo Bills have been without their franchised safety Jairus Byrd on the field on Sundays. A painful bout with a condition known as plantar fasciitis has created a problem in both his feet to which the Pro Bowl player hasn't been able to suit up for his team just yet.

Now limited in practice for the seventh straight time, head coach Doug Marrone insists that Byrd is on the mend.

"I think every day there's progress," he said. "It's just a matter of time now to when it gets to that point where he's going to be able to go out there. So I think we're getting closer and closer. He's working extremely hard."

There are many popular theories out there that the contract squabble with the front office has left a bitter taste in Byrd's mouth, leading him to dwell on the injury more than he should. Marrone has repeatedly said he's seen no signs of that, and that the safety has been an excellent teammate and leader for the defensive backs.

"Really proud of how he's working with the younger players and even the veteran players back there," Marrone said Wednesday. "Jairus has been doing an excellent job. It's like having an extra coach, but I told him he's too young to coach and we want to get him on the field."

During practice, Byrd continued with the scout team as he has been through the first two weeks. There has been no timetable for a return given by either the safety or Marrone, but each are consistent in the belief that one day the pain in the feet will just go away for good.

The Bills and Byrd get back on the practice field Thursday afternoon.
