Bills Beat Blog: July 21, 2011

Plenty, and I mean PLENTY to get to in today's version of the Bills Beat Blog:

Bills starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick joined Howard Simon and myself on The Howard Simon Show this morning. He talked about the lockout process, CJ Spiller, Stevie Johnson and much more. You can listen to the full interview right here:
- Fitzpatrick, like all of us, just wants to get this show on the road. Here's to hoping it happens, and we can all put this painful four month process behind us.

The Bills are tied for the 4th most cap room in the NFL according to John Clayton's projections on ESPN. They'll have $35.9 million in space according to him. Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News wrote a couple of days ago that it's $38 million to his count. So somwhere in that range.
- Whether it be $36 million or $38 million, the Bills will need to spend a good amount of money just to get up to the projected salary cap floor of $108 million. You're likely to see Paul Posluszny and Drayton Florence get higher contracts than you would anticipate to help the team get up to the level. But they aren't worth $24-26 million between the two of them. A backup quarterback will be needed, as will an offensive tackle and overall depth at positions. It will be an interesting off-season in that respect.

Bills LB Shawne Merriman and Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco got in to a war of words on Twitter that was either very, very real boiling the bad blood between the two, or an incredibly elaborate WWE-style facade that fooled all their followers.
- There is some vulgar language in there, so I'm not going to quote most of it here (you can always look at their timelines here and here). But you got the sense that the two really didn't like one another. My personal favorite of the back-and-forth, Ochocinco's response to Merriman in favor of a physical altercation:
"Remember you bruise easy lightbulb."
Burn. Remember, the Bills do play the Bengals in Week 4 this season. So if Merriman is healthy and Ochocinco is still with the Bengals, watch out for the fire between the two (if this is real).

First round pick and DT Marcell Dareus isn't unemployed, but he also has yet to have a source of income since college. Well, that is until he started mowing lawns this summer for some cash. CNN.com picked up the story.
- Waking up at 6 a.m. to go cut lawns in the dead of summer in Alabama, what's not to like about Marcell Dareus. He comes across as a very grounded individual with a small-town type of mentality, that turns in to a nasty force on the football field. That's a dream come true for Bills fans.

It's really, really hot to most of us up in Buffalo. With temperatures in the 90's three straight days, we're in a heat wave. But Bills WR David Nelson just finished his drive to Buffalo from Texas, and begs to differ on his interpretation of the weather.
- He grew up in Texas and went to college in Florida, of course the weather today is nothing for him. But I feel bad for everyone working in a non-AC office. You folks are brave, brave souls.
