Bills GM Whaley says lines of communication open for Byrd

Pittsford, NY (WGR 550)  -- Only in to the second day at St. John Fisher College, predictably one of the biggest stories thus far have been the ongoing stalemate between the Buffalo Bills and franchised safety Jairus Byrd.

Amidst reports that there were no talks between the sides around the July 15 deadline, there was also another report from Albert Breer of NFL.com that said the Bills and Eugene Parker (Byrd's agent), have not talked for nearly a month.

Speaking with the media today, General Manager Doug Whaley said something that could raise a few eyebrows.

"We're not going to do anything in the public or in the media," Whaley started. "Just know that we have been in contact and lines of communication are open."

That could be a bit misleading for a couple of different reasons. First, when this contact happened was not defined as recent or whatever else. It very well could be the case still that Byrd and the Bills haven't touched base in nearly a month as Breer reported.

The lines of communication could be open from the Bills' perspective in the sense that they're open to talking. That doesn't indicate though that there have been any substantial communications.

As it stands, Byrd hasn't signed his franchise tag tender and also has yet to report for the start of training camp. At least to the way they speak in public, they're okay with the defender's decision.

"We respect him as a player and as a human being. Hopefully he comes in, and when he does we'll welcome him with open arms," he said. "But at this time, he's exercising his right and we respect that."

If Byrd does not report by Sunday, he will officially start to miss practice time. The Bills take the field Sunday night at 6 pm inside Growney Stadium.
