Bills part ways with Tashard Choice

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- With their playoff hopes looking slim, the Buffalo Bills may be going into evaluation mode of the younger, less experienced players on their roster. At the very least, that's the way it looked with their most recent roster transaction.

The Bills announced Wednesday morning that they've released veteran running back Tashard Choice. Serving as the team's third running back behind C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, Choice was merely a bit player in the offense when the top two needed a break.

The 29-year old initially came to the Bills in November of the 2011 season, when they claimed the runner off of waivers. In that season, Choice actually started the year with Dallas and was cut, only to be claimed by Washington and then cut once more.

Following the 2012 season, Choice signed a one-year contract worth a total of $780,000. With his release, the Bills now have Spiller, Jackson and rookie Ronnie Wingo as the team's running backs on the active roster. Buffalo's roster now stands at 52 players, with room for the addition of one more.

Joe B's Take:

At 4-8, it would be prudent for the Bills to see what they have on the roster in the setting of regular season games. This move is likely to get undrafted free agent rookie Ronnie Wingo some time on the field so that way the Bills can evaluate whether or not he fills a potential need this off-season. Choice and the Bills were destined for a breakup upon signing only a one-year deal, so if the sizable Wingo (6-foot-3, 231 pounds) can play well, that may cancel the need for the Bills to select a young running back in the later portions of the 2014 draft. Choice's final grades for the Bills in 2013 read as this: 105 offensive snaps and a 2.34 GPA. Through 12 games, he ranked 29th out of 39 Bills players that took at least 100 snaps.
