According to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, McKelvin will be with Buffalo for $20 million over the next four years, although the breakdown of the contract has yet to be revealed. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the contract includes $7.5 million in guaranteed money. The team's 2008 first round pick was set to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, but will instead remain with his original team.
Drafted to solve the team's problem at cornerback, McKelvin took over as a starter in his rookie season, got injured in his sophomore campaign and started all of his third season before getting benched periodically in his fourth and fifth years with the Bills. Over the past two seasons, McKelvin has started just 10 games.
In 2012, however, McKelvin re-invented himself as a return specialist, averaging a league-leading 18.7 yards per punt return on 23 chances. He took two of those opportunities back for touchdowns. McKelvin also averaged 28.3 yards per kick return on 18 tries.
Defensively, he had only 21 tackles and an interception in 2012. He has six interceptions total in five years with the Bills.
For Buffalo, guard Andy Levitre, defensive end Kyle Moore and fullback Corey McIntyre remain some of the unsigned impending unrestricted free agents that will hit the open market Tuesday at 4 pm.
