Bills release Matt Flynn, sign former 4th round pick

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- With the news that rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is closing in on a return and backup Thad Lewis will be available this week, the Buffalo Bills saw one of their current quarterbacks as expendable. The team announced Monday afternoon that they had released veteran quarterback Matt Flynn, only three weeks after signing him to provide some depth at the position.

In his first two games Flynn served as the emergency third quarterback, behind both Lewis and backup Jeff Tuel. This past Sunday with Lewis inactive due to sore ribs, Flynn was the backup to the undrafted rookie Tuel.

With the extra space on the roster, the Bills signed fullback Evan Rodriguez. A former fourth-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 2012, Rodriguez was released in June following two arrests within the span of three months.

In March of 2013, he was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication and then later on in May, he was arrested and charged with DUI. The initial charges stemming from March were eventually dropped.

After his second arrest Rodriguez was released by the Bears in June, and then was picked up by the Miami Dolphins for training camp. During final cuts, the Dolphins released the second-year pro.

At 6-foot-2, 239 pounds, Rodriguez ran a 4.58 40-yard dash at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine and was viewed as one of the better H-back prospects coming out that year. Bills head coach Doug Marrone admitted there was some of that potential, but didn't want to define him just yet.

"I think I'll wait and see. I know that he's very athletic," he started. "He can help us in the H-back mode and I think that he can also help us on special teams. But I think I'll wait to see what actually happens on the field."

The Temple product has 12 career games and five starts in Chicago, catching four passes for 21 yards.
