Bills shuffle linebackers

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- Kawika Mitchell used to be a middle linebacker and today at practice, he was back there. Taking Mitchell's place on the outside is rookie Ashlee Palmer out of Mississippi. When Paul Posluszny got hurt, Mitchell mentioned that he always enjoyed playing the middle and would welcome the chance. He played the middle three years ago in Kansas City. Second year player Marcus Buggs has spent much of his time the past two games either on his back or over running plays. It's a key reason why they had the worst two rushing days against them in Bills history. Mitchell said, "It's a natural position for me, I enjoy making the calls and making the checks so I'm excited about it." As far as the defensive problems, Mitchell says he knows why it's gone bad, "The first two games, I don't even know if the teams got 80 yards rushing, let alone 200 so it's not something that we're not capable of doing. It's just a matter of playing sound ball. We had a lot of mental errors last week and that was the big problem. They weren't blowing us off the ball, it was just people weren't playing smart." Dick Jauron said of the move, "Just experience, it's a hard position to play, you have to make all the calls and all the adjustments. We put a lot of pressure on Marcus and we're certainly not throwing the whole thing on his shoulders, there's enough to go around and as always it starts with me, but Mitchell's been around the game and he doesn't fluster which I think might settle things down."

Demetrius Bell was back to work during individual drills. Donte Whitner, Bryan Scott and Posluszny were watching. Chris Ellis is still not here as he mourns the death of his mother. John McCargo appeared to be working. Dick Jauron said Bell, McCargo and Jairus Byrd were all limited today. Byrd has a hip problem. He doesn't expect Ellis back until after the funeral on Friday.

The players all sang Happy Birthday to Dick Jauron at mid field after practice.

I asked coach Jauron if he considered scrapping the no huddle to improve time of possession. He surprisingly said, "We've discussed that too a lot and I don't think the two are related and I never have. The fact that you huddle or don't huddle has nothing to do with when you snap the ball, how much you use on the clock, it doesn't have anything to do with it. It has to do with communicating, it's a little easier in the huddle than it is on the ball, but other than that there's not a lot of difference."

The players seem united in their defense of coach Jauron. Trent Edwards is tiring of the question and said so. He can't even fathom why Jauron is being questioned at all.

Although the coach admits some of the team’s mistakes the last couple of weeks fall on his shoulders.

“Anytime you have those kinds of errors, I’ve said this to them and to [the media], it’s start with me.  I’ve got to do a better job of preparing them.  It starts with me.
