Mercy Hospital has announced a $4.8 million consolidation of two outpatient and non invasive treatment units on the hospital's second floor. The effort still needs state approval.

General Motors, beware.  Wednesday’s announcement that Toyota will pay $1.2 billion to avoid criminal prosecution for hiding information in a recall case could be a glimpse into your future. Shortly after the announcement, Attorney General Eric Holder issued an apparent warning to GM and other automakers, saying the Toyota deal was “not necessarily the only time we will use this approach. General Motors Co., which is facing a federal criminal probe over delays in recalling small cars with a deadly ignition switch problem, has many parallels to the Toyota case.  READ MORE

The Carpenters union is seeking apprentices. Here's the announcement they sent out.
 

Rochester, NY (March 19, 2014) - The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee (Zone 1), will conduct a recruitment from April 16, 2014 through March 18, 2015 for four carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the New York State Department of Labor Cattaraugus Career Center, 175 North Union Street, Suite 4, Olean, NY on the third Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. during the recruitment period.  Applicants must appear in person to fill out the application.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.  A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign a statement indicating that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which includes:
    • Working off of scaffolding at various heights.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Lifting items weighing over 50 lbs.
    • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of Zone 1, which includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties.
  • Must take and pass a math and measuring computation test.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.  A signed statement attesting to this must be submitted at time of application.
  • Must be willing and able to attend related instruction at an Empire State Carpenters Regional Training Facility for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.
