Last November 12th Milan Lucic cannonballed Ryan Miller, the Sabres cried to the league, the goalie suffered a concussion and the team proceeded to wonder about its own guts for what seemed like the next 2 months. Or maybe it actually was the next 2 months. Maybe it was longer.
At least that's how I remember it. So now here we are, 6 games into a lockout shortened season and already panic is creeping into the fan base about this team looking much the same as the most recent Sabres teams. Sure, Mike Weber, Drew Stafford and Patrick Kaleta have all taken turns standing up for violated teammates and that's better than pretending your goalie didn't just get put into the 5th row by the toughest guy in the league.
What's it gotten them? How good are they? Well as boring as it is to say its still early, it is still early. So we'll see where the initiative to have one another's backs takes them. I think pretty much nowhere if a certain giant defenseman doesn't start playing great.
See Myers, Tyler.
Setting out to figure out where this season is going is not what I am after here today. Nope, my focus is this game tonight in Boston and how likely it is that fans come away from a game with the Bruins impressed or not.
Here are a few scenarios for you to consider, from the absurd and unlikely to predictable.
Scenario 1. The Sabres win the game, make up a score, it doesn't matter because all anyone is going to want to talk about afterwards is the fight between John Scott and Milan Lucic. Not only does Scott pummel and bloody Lucic, he rips the jersey off his back, lights it on fire at center ice and prays in front of it like Jimi Hendrix at Monterey.
I told you, absurd and unlikely. I think the chances Scott gets to fight Lucic are very small. If I'm the Bruins, I want no part of Lucic wasting his time on a one dimensional tough guy. Maybe Scott challenges Lucic, maybe he takes him up on it. Which brings us to,
Scenario 2. Lucic answers the Scott challenge and not only doesn't die, Lucic actually knocks Scott out. The Sabres burst into tears of their bench and just leave even though the game is scoreless and still in the 1st period. Sabres fans burn things overnight.
Scenario 3. John Scott fights Bruins pugilistic specialist Shawn Thornton. They each try to throw a few bombs, none of which land. The fight has absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the game. This is, again in my opinion, the most likely scenario, followed closely by...
Scenario 4. Nobody on either team hits anyone all night. Nothing of significance happens in the game. Goals bounce in off shin guards or sneak through screens that leave the goalie with little chance of making the saves. Maybe the Sabres win this game and we all feel great that they beat the previously 5-0-1 Bruins and think this means that the season is back on track. Maybe the Sabres lose this game and we are sure that it means their season is slipping away after 7 games.
Hockey season y'all. Get some.
