10 Bills observations from the 2013 NFL Combine

(WGR Sports Radio 550) -- As the defensive backs finished up their drills, the NFL once again leaves Indianapolis and ventures off to their respective pockets of the country to prepare for the 2013 NFL Draft.

With it being the first time for some league decision makers to meet some of the prospects in this year's draft, impressions were made at the NFL's largest job interview. What are some of the things to take away from this year's week at Lucas Oil Stadium?

Here are some of my thoughts from the 2013 NFL Combine, while keeping the Bills in focus:

1) Will the Bills draft a Day 1 or 2 QB? I'm not so sure anymore.
- I know how frustrated you must be after reading that. Really, I understand. I was under the estimation that this year would finally be the year that the Bills add a quarterback within the first couple of rounds. However, a few separate things lead me to this belief. It's something I'll explain more thoroughly in a post in the coming days. First, the Bills have a lot of needs with the new staff in place and not a ton of cap room to address it via free agency. Perhaps they'll want to subscribe to the theory of building a team in the first year and bringing in a quarterback the year after. I still believe they'll draft a quarterback at some point in the draft, but I'm not as sold as I once was that it will be within the first two days. Maybe they'll draft a bit of a project like a Matt Scott in the fifth or sixth round. He seems to have the skill-set for all the different things that Nathaniel Hackett likes to do on offense, as well as fitting in to the new wave of quarterbacks across the league.

2) Lack of QB separation
- This certainly plays in to my first thought from the Combine, but there wasn't a clear-cut winner from the 2013 version like there was in 2010. That draft had a lot of questions about the quarterback group and they entered the week with a quarterback needy team atop the draft order, but no player to fill it. Then, Sam Bradford showed up with added muscle on his once skinny frame, and the train was put in to motion for the St. Louis Rams. This year, no one stood out. Not Geno Smith, Matt Barkley (who didn't throw), Mike Glennon, Ryan Nassib, Tyler Wilson or any of them. Perhaps the one that made the most waves, for the same reason as Bradford, was Tennessee QB Tyler Bray. His new, stronger frame will certainly help the eye test. It's still his leadership abilities and overall maturity that continues to be his biggest question. Is there a top 10 player amongst this group? Maybe. But who it ends up being? I still don't know.

3) Plenty of big WR depth, but one stands alone
- This is a good year to live up to the Buddy Nix prophecy of needing a receiver that's "open when he's not." There is a lot of depth to this class, but the one player that could be the game-breaker of the class is Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson. Checking in just a shade below 6-foot-2 and 216-pounds, Patterson went out and ran a 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds. He's highlighted for dynamic plays in the open field and being able to go up and make a tough catch. His weaknesses? He'll drop it from time-to-time and he only played with the Vols for a year. Even so, the guy has home run type potential, and is one of the players the Bills could be targeting at eighth overall. If they don't, there are players like Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins, Terrance Williams and Justin Hunter that could be around in the second round.

4) ILB not as strong up top as once perceived
- The Manti Te'o 40-time aside, there isn't really a player at this position that sticks out like a sore thumb enough for the Bills to consider them at eighth overall. Unless of course Georgia's Alec Ogletree clears up all his off-the-field issues with teams, the first round could go without a player drafted from that position. It's one that could be addressed by the Bills in either free agency or in the second, third or fourth round. One important note for some skeptical Bills fans out there. Just because Kelvin Sheppard hasn't lived up to the expectations in his first two years, it doesn't imply that every linebacker taken in the third round will do the same. Let's not subscribe to that notion, okay? Please and thank you.

5) Dark horse position for Bills at 8
- It was mentioned to me over the weekend by someone in the NFL, and I've been warming up to this more and more over the past few days: Don't necessarily rule out the Bills using their first round pick on the same position that they did last year. That's right. A cornerback. Why, you ask? Well, there a few separate reasons. The Jets, under new Bills DC Mike Pettine, have been so effective on defense because of the play of their cornerbacks, and being able to trust them on an island to get pressure on the quarterback. The Bills currently have Stephon Gilmore on their roster as a starter... and that's it. Buddy Nix seems to lack enthusiasm with the starting prospects of his other players at the position (which includes Aaron Williams), because he named soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Leodis McKelvin as the other starter. Yikes. This position needs another player that can help Pettine do what has made him a successful defensive coordinator. That could mean spending the eighth overall pick on the same position as 2012.

6) Xavier Rhodes turning heads
- If you're looking for a name that could be the Bills pick at eight if they elect to go cornerback, I think Florida State's Xavier Rhodes could be in the conversation. He has everything the Bills like in their corners. He's big (6-foot-2, 210-pounds), fast (4.43 speed), athletic (40.5" vertical), lanky (333/4" arm length) and physical. He's got experience playing up at the line of scrimmage and pressing receivers. He's been the best cornerback at Florida State since he's been there. With Alabama's Dee Milliner likely off the board by the time the Bills pick, Rhodes is certainly an intriguing prospect to say the least.

7) The Bills big two free agents
- Now that we're just two weeks away from the start of free agency, the biggest question for some fans is what the team will do with safety Jairus Byrd and left guard Andy Levitre. I don't think there is any way Byrd leaves. If they don't re-sign him to a long-term deal, I think he will be franchise tagged. As for Levitre? It's certainly looking more and more like the Bills might let him walk. With so many holes to fill on the roster, spending as much as it will take to keep Levitre may not be worth it considering the success of young guards all over the NFL. I'm not necessarily ruling out a Levitre return, but it is a very replaceable position. Big contracts signed one year will force a team to make a tough decision in the future. Levitre could be one of those tough calls.

8) A high(er) tight end pick possible
- For the first time since the Bills drafted Shawn Nelson, it seems like a draft pick on a pass-catching tight end could be in order. Scott Chandler's late torn ACL has Buddy Nix worried, so that may induce a pickup of a player at the position. Don't forget, Chandler is a free agent at the end of 2013, so it could be time to find his replacement and groom him to take over full-time in 2014. It's certainly the right year to do it, too. There are plenty of options to pick up someone at that position in the second, third, fourth or fifth round. Nix said there are as many draftable tight ends this year that he can remember. I'd expect one to be selected at some point. My personal favorite? San Diego State's Gavin Escobar. Don't be worried about the 40 time. He's got a lot of game and will be able to help an offense.

9) Perhaps a tackle?
- Right tackle is a huge issue for the Buffalo Bills. Erik Pears was one of the biggest weaknesses when on the field in 2012, and Chris Hairston didn't fair all that much better. Hairston, based off his performance is at least serviceable in 2013 if need be. But if the Bills want to take care of their bookends for the long haul, don't rule out the pick of a tackle. With some solid workouts throughout the Combine from players at other positions, a player like Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher could drop as Tim Graham of the Buffalo News pointed out. Or, maybe the performance of Lane Johnson could sway the Bills in to a tackle pick at eighth overall. I don't think that scenario is all that likely, but a second or third round player at the position? I could see it happening. This is a deep class at tackle.

10) Versatile outside linebackers could be had
- If the Bills are indeed going to be a multiple front defense, they will need personnel to help all their looks. In the 2013 NFL Draft, there are some types that can fit in to both schemes. Two guys that could be around by the time the Bills are picking at 41 that could help in both schemes are Georgia's Jarvis Jones and Khaseem Greene of Rutgers. Jones would need his medical history cleared up, but he could end up being a steal on the second day if a team's doctors gives them the go-ahead. Greene is someone that flies around in games and shows up even when you're not looking for him. He's a bit undersized and doesn't time well, but he's an extremely impressive player. It may not be either of those players, they are just a pair that I'm suggesting without any inside knowledge on the topic, but the Bills need someone in that mold to come in for the 2013 season. They cannot simply rely on what they have with only Mario Williams, Mark Anderson and Chris Kelsay to do everything required of a multiple look OLB.

The draft is still two months away, so free agency may make a couple of these points moot. However, coming out of the NFL Scouting Combine, these are the biggest things I took away from it in relation to the Bills.

joe
take mike shopps job, please.
02/26/2013 6:51PM
"Right tackle is a huge issue for the Buffalo Bills."
No it isn't. Smh. Pears played well the previous year and you have Chris Hairston who can do a decent job.

Letting Andy Levitre Walk?????
If the Bills are even thinking of letting Andy Levitre walk they have to simple out of their minds. Good offensive line guys are really hard to find and this guy has done everything ever asked of him. Don't be any more stupid than already shown! Unbelieveable!!!!
02/26/2013 7:24PM
Not sign Levitre???
Are you kidding me? Next to Wood this guy is our best O-line man. Our QB couldn't produce with a good O-line in 2012. How will we survive in 2013 without our whole line back? If the Bills lets him walk they're stupid; period!
02/26/2013 7:53PM
Don't Apologize
Please Joe. You are unfortunately overwhelmed with emails, over and over and over again, from a small portion of jobless fans who spend more time on x-box in a week than a 12 year old does in 5 years. These same "fans" either live to whine or are susceptible prey to the overwhelming belief that all you need is a quarterback. Most of us are not that stupid. This team could use improvement in so many areas I have never been as confident in the "best available" strategy. Besides, look what a great sorrounding cast did for that bum Alex Smith in San Fran. I am okay with build a team then add a QB. It is perfectly reasonable. The morons you are apologizing to are the same ones who just want everyone who they are tired of watching fired and wrongly believe anyone could do atleast as good. Clueless morons who should not be pandered too. the same ones who think the Sabres would be just as well off if they fired the whole team and brought up the whole Amerks team. Really just not people worth a breath.
02/26/2013 8:11PM
You're right Joe
Guards are guards. I love Levitre but I loved Lindy also. Let Bird walk. He doesn't want to be here and 6 million for a free safety???? Dominant corner not a bad idea. Go after Dustin Keller and Laron Landry of the Jets. Draft Te'O in the fifth.
02/26/2013 8:40PM
Re:All the panic over Levitre
A 7 m a year GUARD? For crying out loud, people, learn something about football. You can scheme an interior lineman to help him out. You can cut some corners there. But the pie is only so big and having Levitre here doesn't help this team catch the ball or rush the passer. Priorities, folks. You can find a guard. You cannot "find" a veteran OLB who is a three down player.
02/26/2013 9:00PM
Picking a DB
Could make the entire fan base spontaneously combust. They've used 4 1st or 2nd round picks on a DB since 2008. Point 11 should be whether the Bills are considering taking Lacy. Fred Jackson is getting up there after all.
02/26/2013 10:39PM
Seriously?
This is why I hate the NFL draft process. While good FO's like New England and Green Bay sit back and laugh at every team for overanalyzing prospects, teams like Buffalo are sitting here trying to convince the fan base that there are no QB's, WR's, or LB's worth the 8th pick. Picking a QB at 8 is still > what they would be getting in FA or who they currently have on their roster. For three years Buddy has been hesitant on pulling the trigger on a franchise QB, this year he should have to as a punishment for being gun-shy the past years. While we're sitting here making the "safe" picks with Dareus or Aaron Williams (bust), teams are drafting QB's who are all playing on a high level. It's ridiculous to think Bills fans should have to wait another year. In 2014 we will be hearing how Johnny Football isn't NFL ready, Teddy Bridgewater doesn't have an NFL arm, and fill in the blank on any other problem every other QB has. The odds of a Matt Stafford falling into our laps is very remote, our pick at 8 doesn't need to be Peyton freaking Manning. Any QB at 8 will help this team make the playoffs more than a LB or WR.
02/26/2013 11:30PM
OT is definitely a need
i think Graham stole that from some message board posts i made the previous day, but dude above, ersiously? Pears was awful the year before as well. especially after he signed an extension, he was brutal the 2nd half of 2011. Hairston is mediocre. Even Glenn, though decent for a rookie, was not near elite or dominant and never figures to be. The best value at 8 will verly likely be an OT like FIsher or Lane Johnson. Setting up a dominant O-line is probably the best thing they can do for a rookie QB if that's where they go in round 2. the problem with letting LEvitre walk is it seems unecessary. why not give him all of Urbik's money? Levitre is way better and you should not pay average gurads 4 million. you can get them for 1 million or draft one. better to have 1 8 milion dollar Guard and one cheap one than two middle of the road guys. kinda agree on the QB's though. i still lean towards them taking one in round 2, but it's possible they wait.
02/26/2013 11:32PM
Patterson too risky
with all these holes and start of a new regime, i think you need a solid, sure thing at 8. no boom or bust guys, we need solid players to build a foundation. Patterson has 1 year of mediocre production... what receiver has EVER been great after such a pedestrian college career? has it ever happened? he's not even that tall, and has inconsistent hands.. possibly interviewed poorly per Russ Lane. bad choice.
02/27/2013 5:20AM
Just doesn't make any Sense
I'm sorry Joe, but your observations just don't make any sense. WR, QB, and LB should be the order. We all knew there wasn't any QB that was a clear cut starter before the combine. Also, don't be surprised if Geno Smith falls into the Bills lap. I just hope we don't end up with Glennon; the guy looks and sound like he still belongs in High School. I just can't see this guy leading a bunch of men. I still like Wilson or Nassib. Both seem like leaders and are tough kids. Please cut Brad SMith to free up some cap space.
02/27/2013 8:33AM
I want swope
no one is talking about this swope kid from ou. He had a great couple of seasons and could be the next pery harvin
02/27/2013 8:41AM
It's all about the QB
All of Joe's well thought out stuff is irrelivant if we don't have a quarterback. You can never hit on a QB if you don't make an attempt. I may be the only one, but I'd draft 3 QB's a year until I hit on one. All the Gilmore's, Spiller's, and Mayben's are worthless without a Capernick, Wilson, or (name your "too risky to pick QB here") that proves to be real. There are no sure things, so don't wait for him.
02/27/2013 8:43AM
they better take a qb...!
im serious....if fitz is here im gone...!
02/27/2013 8:49AM
Versitile OLBs
I am surprised he didn't mention Dion Jordon. He's able to play 4-3 end or 3-4 olb. But he also has experience in coverage. They would put him at slot corner some times at Oregon. It also doesn't hurt that he a great athlete.
02/27/2013 9:22AM
We got to get on the same page Joe
Alex Smith!
02/27/2013 9:27AM
Jones - 2nd ROund???
There is 0% that Jarvis Jones is available at 41..0%..And how in the world do you assume Geno Smith did not stand out? The guy ran a 4.59, and didn't throw..GENO has to be the pick in the 1st round..Rhodes might be available in the 2nd..
02/27/2013 9:35AM
Why Joe?
Are the Kanas City Chiefs with the #1 overall pick still interested with taking a QB Joe, and we shouldnt? According to their web pages they like Ryan Hassib. Should we blow it again Joe? Were going no where with our are present QBs Joe? How come other teams have taken rookie QBs and made it to the playoffs the last few years? We have done nothing the last 12 years because of the weakness at this position. Do you really think we can wait, wait, wait, until next year and try to get A.J. McCarron from the crimson tide which some teams will give up the house to get him. That means blowing the whole season to get the #1 overall draft choice. This is not fair to the season ticket holders. Who knows for sure whats going to happen between now and next year with next years future draft picks injuries ETC?
02/27/2013 9:44AM
spot on
i am sick of the bills trying to outsmart every team in the draft. just take the best "football" player on the board regardless of need or combine. we are and have been in need of a pass catching TE. how about dustin keller via FA
02/27/2013 9:55AM
Give us somthing to cheer about!
How can we go back this year and cheer on the Bills with these QBs on this team? Knowing there's no hope for playoffs huh Joe? At least with a Rookie QB you start the season with some enthusiasm and interest. It's not fun anymore Joe cheering for a losing cause, at least the last dozen years or so. So you see Joe, change is good especially at the QB position. I hope the Bills draft 2 QBs, in the 1st and 2nd round. The H--- with all the experts telling us what our needs are, (Mel Kiper). The needs of the Bills fans are something to feel good about NOW!
02/27/2013 10:07AM
Patterson - Bray
Tennessee grad here. I watched every single Vols game this year and Patterson is the real thing. Im not going to be surprised if he scores low on aptitude tests since he had to go the JuCo route, but he absolutely took over games. Great as a returner as well. I would be really happy with him in round one. Bray could fit the bill as well. Huge arm strength, could cut the ball through the cold and wind pretty easy. But, he is a bit of whiner on the sidelines. Reminds me a lot of Cutler. After the run of QBs we have had, I would love someone like Cutler.
02/27/2013 10:39AM
Write up
Insightful as always, Joe. Right now what I am intrigued by is the free agent market. How about a write up on where the Billies might aim their FA laser this year? Best prospects? Best possibilities? Keep up the good work.
02/27/2013 11:48AM
Keep it to 5 things Joe
I'm going in circles with you doubling up on me. Five things are enough. Ten is way too much. I read this article, and I ended up with a vertigo attack. Has Fitzpatrick been cut yet? I already canceled my seasons tickets because that guy is still on this roster. The Bills are going to suck again the way things are going anyway with that idiot cowhand at GM in Buddy the Douche. WHAT A JOKE!!!
02/27/2013 11:49AM
re: seriously?...really?
qb's playing at a "high level": tebow? locker? gabbert? ponder? tannehill? weeden?...really?...do you remember that two game stretch where the bills gave up more yards than any team since the 1950's?...they had no linebackers andjust got rid of barnett...they have no cornerbacks other than gilmore and dubbed a ufa starter...grabbing a mediocre qb at #8 would be the stupidest thing nix could do...nothing personal
02/27/2013 12:14PM
Safety
I would be alright with a safety for the 8th pick. If the player is projected right, why not? When have the Bills had a HOF safety on thier team? Polamalu should go to HOF. I would be pretty okay with that. I was hoping for Barron last year.
02/27/2013 12:40PM
@re:All the panic over Levitre
NO DOUBT!!! Look at that idiot Belichick overpaying for that Logan Mankins for 9 years now. That guy is an idiot. Didn't he know he could "cut some corners there", and "scheme an interior lineman to help" out? What a bunch of losers. They obviously have no idea what they are doing. Some who post all day and night on these comment sections could do better than that bum Belichick. And they could motivate thier team with their vast knowledge of 1980's inspirational movies and phrases like "people!!" and "folks".
02/27/2013 1:12PM
I Don't Care
I don't care about what position they draft with the 8th overall pick. I just want to be watching a game 2 or 3 years from now and not only say "WOW! He's good", but say "Holy cr@p!! That guy is going to the Hall of Fame"!!
02/27/2013 1:47PM
thanks joe!
finally some sanity unlike howard simon who will reach for a quarterback with the 8th pick..howard has no college football sense at all. try watching some game howard!!! great observation joe without you that whole staff would be lost
02/27/2013 1:50PM
NO JUNIORS
NO ONE YEAR WONDERS! With the 8th pick I want four years of steady progress and demonstrable passion for football and being the best.
02/27/2013 4:16PM
Really Joe, were you at the combine?
All reports that I've read online and watching it the past 3 days on the NFL Network, they all said Geno Smith separated himself from the rest of the group! One scout said that he really let it ripe at that combine and the receivers hands were hurting! Geno at #8 is my pick! Go Bills!
02/27/2013 6:53PM
sign and trade
Resign Levitre and then trade for draft picks. This team has more holes than swiss cheese. Need DE, ILB, WR, CB, TE and QB. I see them building the defense first and QB will be the least of their needs. Next year's draft will yeild a new QB for the Bills.
02/28/2013 8:47AM
Buddy Nix is an idiot
How could he miss the boat on Alex Smith. Kansas City??? I'll repeat...KANSAS CITY??? He could have made the same deal. We need a Quarterback and he missed the boat. What a nitwit! I recon Fitzsuck is the starter opening day. What a joke.
02/28/2013 9:01AM
Resign Fitzpatrick to another 3 years?
Were good at QB Joe? Most important position on any NFL team! We have our back-up signed Jackson who never played a down for us last year when we really, really needed him? Cmon man, what team did you watch last year? Does anyone think this year will be different with these 2 qbs?
02/28/2013 9:06AM
Trade down...
Have there been any rumors of the Bills exploring a trade down in the first round? It appears to me that they could use the extra volume.
02/28/2013 9:06AM
Draft 2 QBS or 3.
Bills News Flash! Searching for QB or 2 or 3. Please inform Joe....
02/28/2013 11:58AM
QB
I think Bills will take QB at #8. It's their area of greatest need and it may help to fill empty seats at the Ralph.
02/28/2013 9:34PM
Many Needs
This team needs about three years to rebuild with the draft. Best suggestion so far is to trade down for more picks. Patterson would be nice, but he is a bigger risk because he has so little background in football--1 year plus talent != success. The moreQBs they draft, the merrier, IMO.
03/01/2013 12:27PM
Guys I would like to see on the Bills
1st Round (0ne of these guys should be there...) Dion Jordan Mingo Dee Millner Cordarelle Patterson Jarvis Jones (with clean bill of health) 2nd Round (or pick) Tavon Austin (trade up) Keenan Allen Alec Ogeltree Manti Teo Ryan Nassib 3rd Round Tyrann Mathieu Cornellius Washington Marguc Hunt (estonia native from SMU) I really like EJ Manual from Florida State in round 5 if he is still there.
03/03/2013 9:42AM
WE Need A Real Leader ( QB )
JOE! Find one for us. Because we dont have one JOE. Please dont tell us that there is not A QB out there in this years draft because the experts say so... Thats a bunch of Bull-rap. Its always been a gamble no matter what year the draft is or the choice made. You either get a starter or a bust so what? We sure dont have a starter on this team now!
03/04/2013 10:51AM
Success means having a NFL caliber QB!
With out one, your team goes nowhere. A few wins here and there, no playoffs, no super bowl. Sounds depressing to me.
03/05/2013 9:24AM
Geno Smith Really?
Had 2 of the best WR in the nation and still BLEW big games for WVU all by himself? Please replay WVU games from this last season. This guy is no better then Tavaras Jackson and where is he going to take us?
03/05/2013 9:56AM
This Years QB Class?
No matter what anyone says (so called experts) about this years Qb class. There has to be 1 or 2 picks better then what the Buffalo Bills have as QBS on their roster now? We dont need castoffs from other teams!
Title :
Comment :
When assessing the Bills defense, what has the biggest problem been?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
