Canada Sneaks by Latvia 2-1

A thrilling quarterfinal matchup that no one saw coming saw Team Canada barely sneak out a 2-1 victory over Ted Nolan and Team Latvia 2-1, despite outshooting the Latvians 57-16

Canada Opened up the scoring in the first period with a Patrick Sharp blast that beat Latvian goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis making it 1-0. That goal came with about 6 minutes left in the period and was answered quickly by Latvia's Lauris Darzins shortly thereafter tying it at 1.

The 2nd period saw no scoring but many chances for the Canadians, who dominated play throughout. In the third it was more of the same from team Canada who continued to pepper Gudlevskis with shots. The tie was finally broken on the power play with just under 7 minutes left as Shea Weber blasted a shot from the point into the net to give Canada a 2-1 lead. Canada would lock down the defense after that, and took the victory 2-1.

With the win Canada advances to the Semi Finals to take on Team USA on Friday. We'll have full coverage of that game here on WGR550 (radio only), puck drop scheduled for noon, EST.
