Caps Shut Down Sabres 4-1

Jose Theodore stopped 31 shots and Nicklas Backstrom scored one goal and assisted on another as the Washington Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday 4-2.

It took only 1:57 for the Caps to open the scoring when Brooks Laich, standing in front of the net, tucked a shot past Ryan Miller on the power play. Chris Bourque would add his first goal of the season about seven minutes later to make it a 2-0 game. Bourque was able to slam home a huge rebound off a Dave Steckel shot.

Backstrom put the Capitals up 3-0 at the 12:11 mark of the second period by adding another power play goal. Adam Mair finally got Buffalo on the board 7:41 into the third when Adam Mair beat Theodore for his fifth goal of the season. Both teams traded goals inside the game's final minute. Washington struck first thanks to a Boyd Gordon empty-netter, and Clarke Macarthur followed that up by scoring with only 11 seconds remaining to make it a 4-2 final.

Both Paul Gaustad and Nathan Gerbe returned to the Sabres lineup on Tuesday, sending Andrew Peters and Max Afinogenov to the press box as healthy scratches.

The Sabres return to action on Thursday, New Year's Day, when they pay a visit to Toronto. Hear all the action with Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale at 7:00 p.m. on the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
