The Classic Bills take an 8-2 record after last week's win in Miami into Houston for a matchup with the 1990 Oilers.
The Bills entered the '90 playoffs as the top seed in the AFC, as a team with definite Super Bowl aspirations. But as fans from that era remember, it took a few weeks that season for the Bills to take on the look of a champion. They were on the verge of falling to 1-2 when they famously rallied past Denver in Week 3. Another fourth-quarter comeback helped the Bills beat the Raiders in Week 4, and they began to roll. They were 9-1 going into Houston.
The Oilers snapped the Bills' eight-game winning streak with a 27-24 win at the Astrodome, November 26, 1990.
The Bills and Oilers played some memorable games in those years -- including two playoff games -- and this one pales in comparison to some others. But it was a tough, back-and-forth game between arguably the AFC's two best teams of that era.
Jim Kelly hit his top two tight ends (Keith McKeller and Pete Metzelaars) for first-half touchdown passes, the latter giving the Bills a 14-13 lead. But Buffalo couldn't hold on. Lorenzo White (18 carries, 125 yards) scored the go-ahead touchdown and the Oilers held on to win.
The 90s Oilers were better known as a passing team, but it was White's running that gave the Bills problem here. Would Houston have been a Super Bowl team once or twice had they been a little less pass-happy? Had the Oilers been a little more willing to run White instead of passing in the famous wild-card "Comeback Game", Houston would never have let a 35-3 second-half lead get away. Also, had the Bills been more willing to run Thurman Thomas instead of throwing so much in Super Bowl XXV, in my opinion they would have won that game.
