I turned 9 in 1980, so I don't have many personal memories of this Bills season. I wish I had more, because I don't think there were many better Bills teams than this one, or more fun.
The 20-game losing streak to the Dolphins, ended. Resounding home wins over two NFL dynasties, Pittsburgh and Oakland. A legitimate, proven head coach in Chuck Knox. Very good players, just entering their primes: Fred Smerlas, Jim Haslett, Joe Cribbs, Steve Freeman, Jerry Butler. An experienced quarterback in Joe Ferguson, and colorful long-time NFL vets Phil Villapiano, Conrad Dobler, Bill Simpson and Isiah Robertson. This team could have won the Super Bowl. (They didn't.)
The '80 Bills started 4-0 and met fellow unbeaten San Diego in Week 5. It was a great game played by two great teams.
The Chargers led 14-3 in the second quarter, but the Bills closed the gap on a blocked punt by Rod Kush, recovered in the end zone by Lucius Sanford. San Diego upped its lead again, and led 24-12 after three quarters. But Ferguson hit Mark Brammer for one score, and Cribbs ran in from 3 yards out for the winning score later in the fourth. The Bills won 26-24 to improve to 5-0.
Our "Classic" Bills team is now 4-1. Check out recaps of prior games on wgr550.com, and email your comments or memories to me.
A quick postscript. The '80 Bills sometimes wore their white jerseys at home. I think it's time for the Bills to return to that. The Saints did it. The Redskins too. The Bills don't have to wear blue at home forever, do they?
