Sabres Complete Day 2; Draft Former Captain's Son

Montreal, QC (WGR 550)  -- Following their selection of Zack Kassian during Friday's first round of the NHL Entry Draft, the Buffalo Sabres were at least hopeful that they could move up to the second round, however it never happened. The team did not have a Round 2 pick after it was dealt away during the Craig Rivet trade last summer.

With the 66th overall selection in the third round, Buffalo went with 6'4 defenseman Brayden McNabb out of Kootenay in the WHL. He went to Notre Dame college with last year's number one pick Tyler Myers.

"We tried (moving up in the second round), but the price was just too high", said Sabres Director of Amateur Scouting Kevin Devine. "We actually ended up getting a guy in Brayden McNabb who we thought was going to go in the second round anyway so we're happy with that".  Devine described McNabb as a similar player to Sabres defenseman Mike Weber, but bigger.

In the fourth round, Buffalo went with a familiar surname... Marcus Foligno, the son of Sabres great Mike Foligno. The left wing is known as a big body who can clear the way for his teammates and also has a nose for the front of the net. At 6'3", he is much taller than his father was when he made the leap into the draft. Marcus played with the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL, where he was coached by his father.  In his second year with Sudbury, he doubled his goals (12), tripled his assists (18) and almost-tripled his penalty minutes (96).

"Marcus knows Zack Kassian very well, and the both of them are probably the two most physical players in this age group", said Mike Foligno of his son and the Sabres top pick. "Marcus isn't afraid of dropping the gloves; he plays with a mean streak, a physical dimension and with passion that he will bring to Buffalo".

High school defenseman, Mark Adams, was the team's fifth-round selection. The left handed defenseman is listed at 6'1 and 187 lbs.

In the sixth round, Buffalo went with netminder New York, NY native Connor Knapp out of Miami (Ohio) University.  Knapp is a bigger goalie at 6'5 and 215 lbs, and was also invited to try-out for next year’s U.S. Junior team in Lake Placid.

With their final pick, Buffalo selected Shawinigan Cataractes right wing Maxime Legault in the seventh round.  Like their previous picks, Legault is a bigger player at 6'2 and 195 lbs.

"We were able to add some skill with the size we drafted and even positionally it was a balanced (draft) as well", said Sabres GM Darcy Regier.

Regier also answered questions about the Sabres other offseason plans, including pending unrestricted free agent Jaroslav Spacek.  "I think he will (test the market).  He's indicated that he would like to stay, and we also told him we would love to have him but we'll just have to see where it goes".  Regier also confirmed the team didn't offer Spacek a multi-year deal.

Besides Spacek, Regier told the media it is a high priority for the team to sign restricted free agents Drew Stafford, Clarke MacArthur, and Andrej Sekera.

No Action ever from this team!
Wheres the draft day trades to acquire players we can actually see int he lineup next season not in 5-6 yrs? Regier and Quinn are idiots and are ruining this team. The more people in Buffalo realize this the better

Great picks
i dont know who the idtiot above me is but does he realize that the free agent market has a lot of players and buffalo wont go out and throw money around they have to build from the ground up like every other small market team...i like what they are doing these kids have additutes and play hard........

Don't Shop Here!

Have to go with the market
Ladies and Gents, The trade market during this year's draft has been quiet. The Sabres cant create a marketplace, on their own. Most teams will be waiting until next week to make moves. Furthermore, the "trading pieces" we have may or may not be valuable. If we want to dump Tallinder, Hecht and others being overpaid for their lackluster performance, what makes you think others will want them? I have faith Darcy will make one or two deals, but you have to realize our limited commodities in terms of trade market.

pittsburgh?
um, when you draft marc-andre fleury #1 overall, evgeni malkin #2 overall, sidney crosby #1 overall, its not because you found diamonds in the rough. and secondly, not exactly sure where you're gonna come up with the 7 mil per for bouwmeester

?????
Darcy said the year before and before that we will be fine growing from the draft.as you can see we've made it too the playoffs the last too years.stupied team! Move if you're going too be a bunch of scared lil kids !!!!!!!

Pittsburgh
You can't compare the Sabres to Pittsburgh. They had a top 5 pick like 5 straight years. Thats how they got Crosby, Malkin, Staal and Fleury.

Like adding size
I like adding size and toughness. Scouts say Kassian is ready now and I like the size we add w/McNabb joining Myers (Who will come up next yr) we have some size for the futureI like Foligno. I'm not expecting huge offense just a role player like his brother Nick who adds depth in a few years

Re: Pittsburhg
I agree w/Pittsburgh. They sucked and had high picks and thats how they landed Malkin, Staal and FleuryCrosby everyone had a shot at in the lockout yr (Buffalo had as good a chance as the Pens) and fate just went there wayIt's not like they were getting sleepers these were obvious choices.Look at Detroit for late round gemsDatsyuk- 6th round 1998Zetterberg- 7th round 1999Lidstrom- 3rd round 1989Holmstrom- 10th round 1994Franzen- 3rd round 2004Notice that these guys also are all europian. Maybe we need to strenth our overseas scouting.

Long Term Sustainability
I am frustrated like most fans out there but we only think in short term for the team and the GM team is paid to think for both long and short term. Realistically even if we signed all of the guys we lost the last few years (and don't think i don't hate we lost them, then we'd be at like 70 million for the cap. its kind of nice we have a GM that has been around as long as we have had and has had relative success. things could get much worse if we got someone else, not saying eventually we shouldn't think about it but darcy hasn't done a terrible job. his drafting is slightly above average but he excels in trading for players people have given up on that require some refinement to get to the next level. i have confidence that even though i want him to shock me and sign someone great that he's going to get someone i've barely heard of or never thought would be worth the second glance. its because darcy seems something in that player that needs to be pulled out and refined. we haven't made the playoffs in a few years and that REALLY sucks but on the bright side when you look at the signings of players and our drafting i could see us being better this year and in 2-3 years being contenders with a really solid core.
