A very interesting bit of news rolled through today. Denver Broncos Vice President of Football Operations John Elway told 104.3 The Fan in Denver that the team is considering every single position with the second overall pick.
“And anytime you have the draft position we have — second in the draft — you have to look at everybody. And we’re looking at every position, not only the quarterback position, but that seems to get the most attention because of what we have here. But obviously if there’s a guy there that’s a franchise guy there, we definitely have to look at it because we’re not sure we have a franchise guy on our team right now. So obviously we’ve got to visit that, look at it, and do our due diligence on it and then we’ll make our decision from there. But no, it’s not a smokescreen. We realize — and I realize — how important that position is, and if there’s a franchise guy there that we know is a franchise guy, we’d have to look at it.” - Via ProFootballTalk
Although Elway says it's not a smokescreen, it could very well be smokescreen. In his first year, Elway comes across as an executive that knows what message is being delivered, and how it's being delivered. And you have to think this will get back to last year's first round pick Tim Tebow.
But if it isn't a smokescreen, it means that Buffalo may not have to worry about just Carolina if they have their hearts set on a quarterback. I'm sure there will be a plethora of comments with the tone, 'Good, go after defense!' But realize the Bills are not shying away from the fact that they are missing the franchise quarterback on the roster. The search will continue if they don't get their guy in the first couple of rounds this year.
