Fitzpatrick Love: Smokescreen or Reality?

From the first day at the 2011 NFL Combine, I came away with two impressions.

1. The Buffalo Bills like Cam Newton.

2. The Buffalo Bills like Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Now, a couple of quotes from both Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey got my mind in motion upon further review. Both members of the Bills organization said how much they like Ryan Fitzpatrick as the quarterback of the Bills.

Gailey: "I am extremely confident in Ryan Fitzpatrick, I really am. I think he played well enough to prove to a lot of people and me and our staff included, that he can play well and we can win a bunch of football games with a guy like that. I've been to the playoffs a couple of times with guys who haven't performed as well as Ryan. So I think we can do it."

Somewhere, Jay Fiedler is insulted.

Nix: "We really like Ryan Fitzpatrick. He's tough, he's smart, he's proved he can win for us. We are not in a position where we've got to have a quarterback. There's people in the draft that do have to have one. There is some areas, and I'll be honest with you, that we're looking at very strong, that's not quarterback."

Ok, both have weighed in. But, both have alluded to a franchise caliber quarterback that will be able to help your team win not just this year and next, but beyond that in to the forseeable future.

Why do I think there's interest in Newton? Well for one, I speak with people who are connected that believe there is legitimate interest. And two, it was confirmed in Indianapolis today one way or the other.

On Newton, Gailey said on Thursday that he's "anxious" to see the Auburn quarterback work out this week.

When Nix was asked about Newton's 'entertainer and icon' comment, he slipped up a little bit in my opinion. Just analyze this sentence.

"You never know how that was said, you'd have to hear it I think to know. It doesn't bother me. If you like him, it's kind of like scouting, you can make excuses for him if you like him, and if you like him, you say he's really confident."

I know it's speculation on my part, but I decipher that as 'I'm making an excuse for him.' Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. But you'd be a fool to not believe that the Bills are considering the polarizing figure that is Cameron Newton.

What do you think? Was today's agenda to throw people off? Let me know.
