Once everyone sees how amazing they are, it's just a matter of time before you get that bzzzzzz from 550550 telling you that they are real. That's my hope anyway. For at least one of these gems.
Disclaimer: I don't know very much about the young players on these other teams. I chose them based on their profile without any first-hand knowledge of their teams' opinions of them or them as people. My goal was to find young players that fit to make trades realistic and interesting.
In my perfect world, these five Sabres trades happen in the next six days:
1. Ryan Miller to St. Louis for a 2014 first-round pick, forward Ty Rattie and goalie Jaroslav Halak. The Sabres don't fill a hole in net by this trade, at least not beyond this season, as after the season ends so does Halak's contract. Halak is a placeholder.
In his first year of professional hockey, Rattie is leading the AHL's Chicago Wolves in goals (21) and points (36). He was the 32nd pick in the 2011 draft. Rattie is 6-foot-1 and turned 21 earlier this month.
I think is trade is balanced. The Blues get a goaltending upgrade for a team primed to take a step toward the Stanley Cup. The Sabres get a nice prospect and a sure-to-be low first-round pick.
2. Matt Moulson, Marcus Foligno and a 2014 2nd-round pick to Los Angeles for Valentin Zykov and a 2014 first-round pick. Moulson, Jonathan Quick's brother-in-law, gives some scoring punch to a team that seems to have lost its own. The inconsistent Foligno offers the Kings some youth and talent to bring up the Sabres' end of the deal.
Zykov, the 37th pick in the 2013 draft, has 56 points in 46 games for Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL. He will be 19 in May. Zykov, 6 feet tall and 209 pounds, was last year's QMJHL Rookie of the Year.
I think the draft pick shift makes this trade balanced, although if I'd probably do a trade like this without that part.
** LA may have to find cap room to make this trade, and I'm saying here that they do that through other moves.
3. Steve Ott and Brayden McNabb to Tampa Bay for Brett Connolly. Tampa is good, despite having been without Steven Stamkos most of the year. I see Ott as a good fit for them. Whether or not they like McNabb is a guess on my part. I would think McNabb, 23, has a skill set interesting to some teams. If I'm the Sabres I have enough depth on defense to move one or two men.
Connolly was the sixth overall pick in the 2010 draft. He has 32 points in 42 games for Syracuse of the AHL, a slightly slower scoring pace than he set last year for that team (63 points, 71 games). If Tampa Bay is ready to make a run, perhaps they would have to sacrifice Connolly.
Like LA, Tampa has limited cap space. Fans will be watching them to see if Martin St. Louis gets moved in light of recent reports.
4. Tyler Myers to Winnipeg for Evander Kane. Should I have led with this one? I think Myers is completely expendable. You see flashes of his talent but just enough to tease you.
The future of the Sabres on defense, if it were up to me, does not include him. Ristolainen, Zadorov, Pysyk ... you won't see those names in my trades. That's my defense. If I have a good team someday, at the deadline I'll supplement with a bearded veteran or two. I frankly don't care if Myers, whose dedication has been suspect in his still-young career, is on my team any more or not.
Kane, meanwhile, is an exciting idea. He's locked in at $5.25M for the next four years. Kane has but 29 points in 42 games for Winnipeg, a team likely to miss the playoffs again.
This trade works if the Jets want to veer in another direction, and, of course, if they like Myers. The Sabres once dealt Phil Housley to the Jets for Dale Hawerchuk so I might be guilty of thinking somehow these teams are meant for something like Myers-Kane. Cap-wise, this move is no problem.
Remember, the word fun is in the headline.
5. Tyler Ennis to Philadelphia for Anthony Stolarz and a 2014 3rd-round pick. I'd love it if at the deadline were able to move either Ennis or Cody Hodgson. If it doesn't happen, it can wait a year. But Ennis is up for a new contract and I think all the Sabres should want to do is two years max. That second year would make it easier, potentially, to trade him next season.
Stolarz is the goaltender for the OHL's London Knights. He suffered an ugly skate-cut leg injury a month ago but is on the road to recovery. Stolarz, 6-foot-5, was the 2012 draft's 45th pick.
I don't love this one. My guess is the Sabres would like to find a top-flight goaltending prospect at the deadline -- Jake Allen of St. Louis, Martin Jones of LA, Malcolm Subban of Boston, like that -- and Stolarz does not appear to be quite that. But they can shoot for that next year too.
If LA wants Myers or Christian Ehrhoff and is willing to trade Jones, there might be blockbuster-deal potential there. But again, the Kings have cap issues to consider. Maybe they move Dustin Brown. I think after the Blues, the most interesting team for Sabres fans to keep track of this week is Los Angeles.
The Kings 2nd round pick would have to be returning their own though (that the Sabres have from the Regher trade). I wouldnt want to swap the 25th or so pick for the 31st pick
Five fun trade ideas
all good and things i'd go for. Not sure if the shine is off the Tyler Myers turd or not? Would Winnipeg think they can fix him? I'd like to get Tyler Tolfi from LA. Had some success as fill in for LA in the regular season.
JP Losman was buffalo's only hope
Losman should get another shot
Myers for Kane
Unfortunately I think the Sabres have to give up much more than Myers to get Kane. Especially with that big contract around his neck. Maybe give them Foligno and a 2nd round pick too?
I hate Schopp...
i like them
But what about this trade Myers and islanders pick and a 2nd for Kielser and Canuck 2015 1st rounder.
go away mike
please go somewhere else away from buffalo.
Weber is promoted to Capt.
No matter what they do...
WGR will love it! I can remember years back when the Sabres traded for Dominic Moore and Mike Schopp starting off the show by saying whoa!? This station is so bias when it comes to this team and the hosts are just terrible when it comes to sports they aren't very knowledgeable. I expect this station to praise anything they do even if we land Bob Corkum again.
Dream a little bigger
How about Tyler Myers, Grigorenko, and Stafford for Kessler and a Canuck's prospect.
I'll take it as only fun trade ideas not in my Armchair
Thank God these five are only fun, but if they were your actual trade proposals, I'd have to call you a numbskull for being an idiot. The only buzzing you'd hear is a dial a tone. If I was a GM, I'd hang up on you like you do to your callers. Again, thank God these are only fun trade ideas. Skip the "yet" after the warning atop the page, you could be called an idiot by other commentors. That may lead them to that seeing that.
Here five fun trade ideas.
#1 schoop get traded to canada radio station. 2# They pull the plug on the whiner line. #3 The bulldog gets adopted by a loving couple who finally gives him a name so he can stop crying. #4 Paul hamiltion is fired and gose back to chicargo and start running from the mob; Because he said he a goon. #5 A new radio station comes to buffalo; And pushes wgr off the air because they don't listen to fans.
Some of these are ok ideas but I don't like the idea of trading for Zykov. No more Russians, please.
Myers and Ennis
They're untouchable to me unless youre getting a star back.
I would like to see Murray wash his hands of the Grigorenko pick, and do so while bringing just a little value back. I assume he wouldn't fetch much alone in the market, but packaged with someone else might be appealing to someone.
Some not bad
Actually the only thing I could agree on is Miller but seriously doubt it happening. Don't know about anyone else but I wish people get away from dumping Ott(your Captain)and Moulson who actually want to stay here and have proven themselves. Getting a first-rounder for Vanek (Moulson) then dumping him off is really dumb.Myers & Ehroff is also stupid. They are good and have good contracts
If a caller suggested any of these you guys would laugh him off the phone. Everyone thinks Miller, Ott and Moulson are all gone via single trades but why can't there be a package that involves two or three of these guys?? The debate is interesting and what makes this years trade deadline so unique for the Sabres is the GM has no emotional connection to anybody so everyone is fair game
SCHOPP "SILLY NESS" OUT OF CONTROL!!!
TENNIS! TENNIS! TENNIS!!! Just stick to YOUR GAME, MAN!
Pistolainen, Zipporov and Pys-off are your future at D? And Stafford stays?
You need serious mental counselling! Pysyk is a pylon that doesn't hit, shoot, pass or skate and has no upside. Unless he's "good" in the locker room, dump his sorry a$$! Ristolainen is nothing and Zadorov is about the same. The Sabres are three to four good, tough NON-European defensemen from having three to four good defensemen on the Sabres. It is inexplicable why Drew Stafford cannot be removed from this team. Just CUT him already! And, why oh why do you think that Moulson by himself doesn't get you a first from nearly any team?
There is no way any GM gives up anything of any value for Myers. I agree, I don't want him on the team anymore, but don't expect anything in return.
lay off the pot man...this is so crazy...it's not worth a comment...420 all day.......
Nr. 1 is OK, but I don't think St. Louis is interested in Miller.
Nr. 2 is a nice pickup for the Sabres.
Nr. 3 is a disaster. McNabb? Really? AND Ott? No. McNabb has too much potential and Connelly isn't worth both of these guys.
Nr. 4 No. Myers is still a future Dman for this franchise and Kane, while very valuable, is often hurt.
Nr. 5 I don't think so. If we're talking Fucale from the Canadiens, then yes, maybe. But not Stolarz...at least not at this time.
Interesting, But not enough for Kane.
You're not getting Kane for Myers in a one-for-one swap. I think offering Myers as the focal point of a deal for Kane makes a lot of sense, but that's not even close to even value. I'd actually scrap that Ennis trade and include him in an offer for Kane. Even then you're probably not offering enough to interest Cheveldayoff.
Stolarz is a nice player, but why not use of their accumulated picks on Thatcher Demko? You give up less and end up in the same spot with a strong G prospect. Not to mention, Linus Ullmark is going to be the real deal.
Yeah, We Need Some Good Fun ....
Tired of all the other "serious" speculation. I'm emotionally exhausted, man
it'd be amazing
How COOL would it be if the Sabres traded away Moulson and Ott for picks, prospects, etc, only to re-sign both guys to Buffalo at the end of the season! How awesome that would be for Buffalo!!!
Moulson and Foligno for Dustin Brown. Then we resign Moulson in the summer and attack Callahan with a stupid offer.
Ott goes no-where. He wants to stay in Buffalo and is a role model. Keep Myers and ship the Pylon Pysyk out, at least Myers can put the puck in the net. We all know WGR 550 has a Bro-mance with the Pylon! Miller will definitely be gone. Moulson stays in Buffalo with Ott. Forms a number one or two line with Hodgson. Ennis is too small for Philly. If he goes it is to Carolina, Nashville, Panthers or Tampa.
Not to bad! Fun for sure
I love the Myers for Kane trade and is not that far off if the Jets want Myers. If they do that trade can get done pretty easy! LA has a ton to offer and we have a lot of what they need to. Murray should just sit on the phone with them and not hang up till a deal gets done.
We have one option left for eating part of a salary other two have been taken. Also we have a ton of room for salary so we could be a salary dump spot too.
the classic "my guys not good enough, gimme your best player for him straight up" lordy
Let's trade the WGR talking heads to somewhere in Russia where their opinions mean so much. You guys don't know anymore about hockey than you do football. Schopps best move so far was leaving Rochester, NY.
Ennis is a rebuild piece
Tyler Ennis is not an NHL center. He does not have an active enough stick in open ice and not willing to sacrifice body for shot blocking. He will settle in as a 2nd line winger. His next contract will be good value for top six forward.
Anyone named Tyler on this team should be traded
Myers, Ennis yes trade them. They just have not been consistently good enough and even with better teams in the recent past have not been difference makers in the playoffs. Neither is self motivated and neither is anywhere close to being "one of best" at his position in the NHL.
Re: Pipe dreams!
Ennis is another version of Afinogenov...a water bug that coughs up the puck and its in our net. Ennis belongs in the minors.
Trade Useless Schopp
Maybe we get lucky and get rid of this guy....whose more of a problem to the listeners than anybody and have GR have guys to stick to sports and not these stupid other things like Idea of the day etc!
Somethin > Nothin
Get whatever you can for Grigorenko. Dude is gonna be poison
and will probably be truckin back to the KHL at some point when a coach pisses him off.
This For St. Louis
Any real contender wants another scorer for the Cup (1-0 loss the other night). So they tell the Sabres they want to talk about Moulson -- and Tim Murray says sure, but let's talk about Miller too. Both of them, a blockbuster deal. Go big, Blues! How many shots do you get to win it all? And there's always the threat of Miller/Moulson/Ott being dealt to your playoff rivals...
the crack pipe was asmokin
if I was murray i would trade moulson to ottawa for stone and 2nd round pick. Then I would trade miller and stafford for halak and swartz. I would then trade myers to edmonton for eberle. And finally I would trade erhoff and ennis to vancouver for kessler and 2nd rounder. With the intention of signing callahan in free agency.
Are these comments for real?
The comments on this article represent some of the most bizarre and convoluted sports opinions I've ever seen assembled in one place...
Pysyk a pilon? Is this guy for real? If he wasn't in the AHL right now he'd be one of the best skaters on this team...
I think these are some fun, realistic trade ideas. The only one I wouldn't be interested in is the Ennis trade. Ullmark is a considerably better prospect than Stolarz, most Buffalo fans are just unaware of some of the guys we have in our system.
Nice article Schopp. Enjoyable read.
Another useless and worthless idea..........
What you SMOKING.......I am so sick of your polls and ideas of the day. They are useless and lame....
Good overall but...
#2 doesn't work at all.. Their first round pick might as well be a second round in this years draft.. change it to 2015 1st and it sounds better. Seems a bit of an overpayment on our part though. There are enough teams wanting Moulson to warrant that return from him alone.
#5 change Myers with Erhroff and thats a deal.
Funniest article on the net.
I know Regier took some deserved flak for thinking too highly of his own players, but a couple of these are laughable. No reason to give up on Foligno. You should be able to get that deal done without using him as a throw in. Same with McNabb.
You're a complete moron
Seriously, have you watched any Sabres' games this year? Myers is far, far better than you give him credit for.
You want to give away Ott and Folgino plus a pick in one trade for a high first rounder and prospect? What? Dam.n, boy, you might want to get back to your tennis wardrobe catalog and pick some "cheeky" shorts for next season, because you have no idea what to do with a hockey roster.
How about trading
Ehrhoff and Ennis/Foligno to Colorado for O'Reilly and a 3rd or 4th Round pick if he was willing to stay on with the sabres
Trade Shopp, Simon, and half the other WGR staff for a bag of pucks and some used jock straps. Anything is better then that clueless crew!
I consider Mcnab and Filigno untouchables, no way would I trade these 2 young guys , as far as Myers , if the offers good take it . I de like to see Moulson stay a sabre also .
good trade idea
Pysyk straight up for Crosby
Numbers 2,3 and 5 are idiotic
1. Great deal for Buffalo but unlikely St Louis offers Rattie. I could see them offering a similar package but with a 2nd tier prospect (although unlikely that will entice Murray unless it is by far the best offer out there). 2. Good offer on our part but I would swap Zykov for Toffoli for a couple reasons: A. Murray wants someone a couple years into development and with NHL experience, Toffoli has shown he can play in the NHL already. B. The Russian headache in Buffalo already exists. 3. Great deal for Buffalo but a huge sacrafice for Tampa. Ott is a rental and McNabb is expendable with our current D depth. Then if Ott comes back in the offseason we've essentially traded McNabb for Connolly straight up. HUGE win for Buffalo. 4 and 5 I dont like at all. Myers is finally coming around and his value is not enough to get the return out of him that counters his upside (that still exists people!). Ennis as trade bait Im okay with but it would have to be for a better prospect than Stolarz and I dont think goalie prospects are a need we should be addressing right now.
Will someone that knows hockey please get hired to post. This is horrible
Ummmm.... Prepare to be disapointed
Your expected return on your "perfect world" trades are delusional. Why would any team give away the farm for a pending UFA? Miller (UFA) for a 1st, Ty Rattie who is the Blues 2nd best prospect behind Jake Allen (their future goalie LOL, Oh and throw in Halak! I also love that you think Myers will net you Evander Kane. No biggie, just give up your best forward, a guy that would lead his team in scoring if it wasn't for his injury for a d-man who was "supposed" to be good but hasn't had a decent season in 4 years! Oh and PS> Byfuglien, Trouba, Bogosian, and Ellerby= no need for an overpaid under achiever ;)
Steve Ott and Brayden McNabb to Tampa Bay for Brett Connolly?
Dude...Talk about seriously overvaluing Connolly. From what I've seen of him (and I live in Tampa) he resembles his former Buffalo namesake Tim Connolly. Lots of speed (which he uses when he feels like) lots of dangle (enough to not know when to make the simple play) and once you put him on his keester, he shies away from contact for the rest of his shifts. Wouldn't say he's "heartless", per se - But, he's definitely not driven enough or consistent enough to have stuck in the NHL, while other lower-drafted (or undrafted, in the case of Tyler Johnson) kids have come up and earned their keep. Let's say Connolly's still in the AHL because he has yet to overcome his sense of entitlement. He looks good in the minors because he's a somewhat talented fish in a small pond.
Why aren't we trying to get Marc's Brother Nick?
Honestly I would like to see BOTH the brothers in the blue and gold. Nick is a great two way player and I think would really help his brother develop. Foligno's should be in Buffalo. Both of them. I would give offer Leino w/ buy out, Stafford, and a low pick since we have tons to work with. I would be open to offers as well. NICK TO BUFFALO!
After reading all the above I am convinced now that years of mind numbing WALMARtT "hockey" and RUSS'S "BRAND" of 6 AND 10 has manifested themselves in causing ALL OF BaARFALO to become DRUG ADDICcTS!!!! GO TO REHAB MAN! SAVE YOURSELF... STOP WATCHING THESE CRAPe FRANCHISES!!! NO ESTABLISHED NHL STAR WOULD EVER EVER COME TO WALMART!!! even you'll see eventually, even you.
I don't wanna see Ennis go. I think he is someone that is gonna flourish under Nolan.
THAT WAS SO FUN!!!!
what about miller and stafford for jimmy howard and tomas tatar? Miller has michigan connections and his brother plays there and howard is from ogdensburg.
Murray - Listen Up!
Don't Listen to Schoop. He doesn't know enough about hockey!1. St Louis: Take Ty Rattie and Chris Stewart for Miller and Foligno, even without the Number 1 pick.
2. Take whatever the highest bids are for Ott and Moulson, But PLEASE bring them back next Year! We need both of their type of players!
3. Sign Callahan! Sign Callahan! Sign Callahan!
4. Keep Myers and Ehrhoff and build your D around them! Knowing we have 3 potential D-studs in Pysyk, Zadorov, and Ristolainen. Use one of them and our picks , as needed, to Oilers for Gagner or Yakopov.
5. And if all of these are a wash, JUST PLEASE rid the SABRES fans of the horror of having to watch Ville Draino fall down and cough up the puck one more time!!!!!!!!!!!
@Dream a little bigger
are you serious? grigorenko, Stafford and myers for a Band-Aid in kesler who has lost a couple steps and a prospect? wow...
@Myers and Ennis
Ennis untouchable lol? What makes him untouchable?
There is nothing on this roster i wouldnt give up to get Evander Kane or Ryan Kesler. Go get em and we make the playoffs next year and then who knows what.
Schoop is very annoying. Almost as condescending as the genius Jeremy White. These guy don't care about your opinion. They just like to correct you and tell you how analytics prove them right about EVERYTHING. Why bother having callers voice any opinion when you only respect 1 in 10 of them? This market is SO ripe for competition on the radio. Give me a sports guy who has been in the trenches like Rob Ray or "the coach". Yeah, you have a broadcasting degree and collect baseball cards. I guess that makes you an expert. What a joke. At least Howard Simon gets it. He listens and may disagree, but won't make a caller feel stupid because he/she has a different opinion, no matter how outlandish. Just sayin'.
