Former Sabres GM Regier hired by Coyotes

Former Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier has found new employment.

Arizona Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced on Thursday that the Coyotes have signed Darcy Regier to a multi-year contract to serve as the team’s Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager.

"I'm thrilled to bring (Regier) on," Maloney said. "I think he's a great resource for the organization. For me, he's intelligent, creative, experienced, knows the league, knows people in the league, knows players. I can't imagine a better hiring for this organization than Darcy."

Regier spent 17 years with Buffalo prior to being let go by the organization along with Head Coach Ron Rolston in November of last year.

Coyotes....
Trying to get next year's #1 pick!
07/03/2014 4:59PM
Over pay
Do you think we can trade off some of "Darcy's guys?" You know how much he over values them... More picks! Trade-a-palooza! Drew Stafford for Rochester native, Philip Lane, 2015 and 2016 1st rd picks!
07/03/2014 5:18PM
Come on 'GR
Who put this on here? Jeremy??? Why even put this Joke on here? Is it just to stick bad memories up our rears? Is this the next franchise that will get ruined with his antics of DO NOTHING and his STATUS QUO approach or letting good players go? How many players in Arizona want to get out hearing this? I'll take Shane Doan for Ennis, Stafford and Ellis. HA! Pathetic. Walmart in the Desert...LOL
07/03/2014 5:24PM
This broken news has nothing to do about what's going on good here
Change the subject: Has anyone heard anything about Steve Ott re signing? Come on Tim!!!
07/03/2014 5:47PM
Go get um Darcy
I fully expect Roy, Spacek, Montador, and Tim Connelly to be signed in Arizona. then Darcy will ad Larry Quinn as special advisor.
07/03/2014 6:04PM
I think that's great!
Always wish the best for people. Darcy did a lot more good with the Sabres than not. Like Tim Murray has talked about, treat people right ... 'cuz today's victor is tomorrow's vanquished. Besides, some of you windbags on here would fireyour own mother ... if you could do it anonymously
07/03/2014 6:05PM
Thank You Darcy for the work you did here...
...by giving Murray the best prospects in the league as well as a host of draft picks so that he can continue the rebuild that you started. I wish you all the best in Arizona.
07/03/2014 6:08PM
GM malpractice
If there was such a thing as GM malpractice, Darcy would define it. Just horrible management. Darcy continues to influence intelligent people to see things his way. I wonder if it will take the Coyotes 17 years to figure out that he is useless.
07/03/2014 6:27PM
Who knew Murray wouldmake Regier look like he did a good job
Hold on Sabre fans, this baby ain't gonna move more than 2mph for at least 3 years. The worst rebuild in NHL history.Makes me laugh, let me know how its going for ya.
07/03/2014 6:31PM
Murray is talking to Rick Vaive's agent, looking at $8M for two seasons, a vet RW for Buffalo
Dream on naive, deer in the headlights, fantasy world Sabre fans. Ignorance truly is bliss. The only way to improve in Buffalo is to be helpless and be the worst you can be.
07/03/2014 6:46PM
finally
Darcy gets to work with a financially stable, free spending ownership that...um...wait,what?...oh...I'll get back to you in a while on that...
07/03/2014 6:57PM
RE: Murray is talking to Rick Vaive's agent, looking at $8M for two seasons, a vet RW for Buffa
Merry Christmas to you to, sir. How's the weather in Toronto?
07/03/2014 7:29PM
Draft and trades
Say what you want about Darcy but the guy knows how to draft and trade
07/03/2014 7:33PM
What Saps..............
the Coyotes are. Nothing more to be said.
07/03/2014 7:36PM
Help Wanted
Two radio show hosts for the Arizona Coyotes to promote a fail first attitude for the Connor McDavid sweepstakes coming in 2015. Experience needed to possess a fan base to support a full throttled "tank" job for the coming season. Boy, I cannot believe that a WGR host got a friendly invite by the Sabres brass to sit in and see what it is like at an NHL trade deadline in the war room at the FNC and then go on the air and preach total failure. He should be ashamed of himself and embarrassed after getting to see an experience like that no other fan may ever get to see. What a nitwit. Go help out Darcy and preach failure and support the Coyotes. They may have a crack at McDavid tool. You should be ashamed of yourself. Tim Murray and the boys must think, Why did we let that idiot in here.
07/03/2014 8:06PM
For all you folks
who thought Darcy was a good drafter and trader....look at the team last year...and all those "playoff" teams....yeah..good job.....
07/03/2014 8:39PM
Morons
I love the morons who come on here and say Murray is doing an awful job. How do you people even get out of bed in the morning? So far he is going about it as you should. The Sabres do not need Steve Ott so please stop begging for him to be signed. Regiershould have signed Gionta before he went to Montreal and the Sabres would be in a much better place already. Brian is a leader and will do wonders for the attitude within this organization.
07/03/2014 9:29PM
Why didn't Regier trade for Gionta?
Well, as was noted above, he is at his best at trading and obviously Montreal wasn't ready to take what Darcy had to offer. That was probably a deal Buffalo should have turned down. When it came to trades, I trusted Darcy completely.
07/03/2014 9:36PM
Darcy brings a lot of good things to them
but it works better for Arizona that there is then someone above him to pull the trigger once in a while.
07/03/2014 10:06PM
Re: Why didn't Regier trade for Gionta?
IDIOT!
07/03/2014 10:14PM
I hope he took his fax machine with him and his crickets
Enough said.
07/03/2014 10:16PM
Re: Idiot
I believe you are speaking for yourself. Take a look in the mirror once in a while...if you can stand it.
07/03/2014 10:19PM
Re: IDIOT
That's the best you got for him? Intelligent rebuttal by your standards, but your vocabulary needs some work.
07/03/2014 10:56PM
I'm surprised he wasn't hired in Minnesota....
...considering that, if rumors about Roy being signed by the Wild prove true, then most of Regier's vaunted Rochester core (Pominville, Vanek and Roy) will be there. Obviously, Fletcher loves the same players that Regier does!
07/04/2014 4:37AM
unbelievable
As a former western new Yorker now living in phoenix...I want to throw up when I learned the news that darcy is joining the Coyotes. Well, they were a very good time up until now. I give them a few years until Darcy ruins this team too!!
07/04/2014 7:30AM
Farcy Regier
The headline should read "FORMER SABRES GM HIRED TO RUIN THE COYOTES"
07/04/2014 7:35AM
Sign Now
If I were a Coyote who has had one good half season I would sign asap for a big, long term front loaded contract. They always work out(Myers, Stafford, Gerbe, Leino).
07/04/2014 10:18AM
Sabres Fan in Kingston
Amid a variety of ownership changes Darcy Regier certainly was a constant with considerable longevity as the Sabres GM. And,oh yes, thank you for the quite successful Vanek trade to the Islanders which will for awhile remain a gift that keep on giving. Ithink Darcy Regier is a decent man who did as much as possible during his tenure to build contending teams and be loyal to coaches and players.
07/04/2014 10:18AM
Draft & Trade response
Too few of Darcy's draft picks or trades have truly worked out? He drafted 149 players and only four have been named as all-stars (Miller, Pominville, Campbell & Vanek) and Pominville was a stretch. They had to name one from each team. He has made a couple of good trades (Drury, Gilmore/Dupont & Brier). Let's face it, Brier turned out positive but at the time it was two teams trading their trash. So, in 16 years he made a lot of moves and a lot of picks, but didn't have much to show for it. Moreover, he should have been smart enough to know that Grigorenko was not ready and we lost a year of eligibility should he actually turn out. The current team is made up of a lot of his picks, so there is a chance if some turn out. But all in, I think if you went through some of the other teams, you would find many more successes than the less than 10 he has acquired.
07/04/2014 10:58AM
COYOTES WILL NEVER MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN!
Maloney has destroyed this team since 2012 when they were actually THISCLOSE to going to the Cup finals, they beat Chicago and almost beat LA. Since then Maloney has dismantled this team with his "REGEIR" like "mind"! Now he has HIRED his "life partner" to join him and lets face it even I know THERE'S ALOT MORE GRRRREAT GOLF IN ARIZONA!!!??? WELCOME TO WALMART SOUTHWEST!!!! ELITE ME NOW!!!! SAY MY NAME! WALMART= "THEEE ONLY BIGGEST NICKLE AND DIME LOoSER FRANCHISE THAT'S $30 MILLION DOLARS "BELOW" THE CAP IN ALL OF PRO SPORTS HISTORY"!!!!! RELENTLESS SAY MY NAME!

WALMART= "THEEEE ONLY BIGGEST NICKLE AND DIME LOoSER FRANCHISE THATS $30 MILLION DOLLARS "BELOW" THE CAP IN ALL OF PRO SPORTS HISTORY!"" ENJOY THE GOLF REGEIR WILL BRING!!!
07/04/2014 11:05AM
The Regier Years
My problem with Darcy is that over his long tenure he had far more minuses than pluses, and the minuses were huge. But take one step back: when did he have the most success? The Hasek years(or at least some of them) where he inherited possibly the best goalie of all time from his predecessor GM, and the two years post-lockout where he frankly lucked into fielding a team he had built to compete under the OLD rules only to find them ideal for the NEW rules. Taking that into consideration, the teams that HE built "on purpose" so to speak have been almost complete failures. I don't know Darcy could even keep a straight face when he called Tim Connolly a "top ten in the league" center. Unfortunately, he was serious and paid him as if he were. Only Brian Burke seems dumber by comparison.
07/04/2014 11:07AM
LOOK AT THAT FACE!!! THAT WALMART FACE!!!! YOU LUCKY COYOTES!!!
THE FACE OF WALMART! "THEEEE ONLY BIGGEST NICKLE AND DIME LOoSER FRANCHISE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF PRO SPORTS THATS $30 MILLION DOLLARS "BELOW" THE CAP!!!!" WHERE'S ELITE? WHO'S ELITE? WHEN'S ELITE? HOW'S ELITE? WHT'S ELITE? I AM THE ELITE ONE! SAY MY NAME!
07/04/2014 11:22AM
Coyotes now a lock to relocate!
The Coyotes lease has an escape clause. If they lose $50 million in 5 years; they're free to leave. It looked like they were going to lose $50 million and leave anyways but with Darcy onboard; how can they miss?
07/04/2014 11:44AM
Wow
It was a matter of time when the Walmart guy would wake out of bed and open up his flood gates on this story. Think: Regier can maybe be a help in taking a few players off our hands. Yes, the few left on the Sabres roster from his regime. Would he send Doan here?
07/04/2014 12:13PM
Taking a closer look...
For those who think DR was really a quality manager check out the guys he had a chance to select and DIDN'T. The list is long and loaded with super stars. There's one simple example of what happened at the trade deadline and it's this: We traded Moulson and McCormick for Mitchell and two second round picks. As of today we have Moulson and McCormick back, a real nice young draft choice AND Gorges from Montreal (the pick used to get him). Now that's how it's done!
07/04/2014 12:35PM
THE JOKES ON THE COYOTES
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
07/04/2014 1:18PM
THE IGNORANCE ON THIS BOARD IS STAGGERING!
Darcy's draft record is amongst the best in the league. And the guy sure knows how to rob people in trades. The rest of the criticism on this site is misguided and way off the mark. If one didn't know any better, it would appear that he was the worst GM in the league for a franchise record setting 17 years. I don't consider Rigas, Golisano, or Pegula to be fools but obviously most of people who write here do. His longevity and record (when looked at objectively) speaks for itself. He is a very intelligent and capable man - I've met him personally - and he will do well in Phoenix.
07/04/2014 1:36PM
Darcy
Nice person. Lousey GM
07/04/2014 1:39PM
Pomminville
The organIIzation was planning to do a modest tribute to JP when he first returned to play a game in Buffalo. Ted Black approved it .... Darcy scrubbed it. Doesn't seem like the way Terry P. wants the organIIzation to operate with regard to formerplayers. Darcy just didn't get it.

Out of the Closet
Claude Giroux just came out--first openly gay player in the league. What bravery! The Art Voice crew owes him a debt of gratitude.
07/04/2014 2:21PM
Not sure how I feel about this
On one hand, Darcy's a nice guy who occasionally lucked into a successful stretch or made good trades or acquired players who worked out. On the other hand, I have relatives in Phoenix who like hockey, so I feel a bit bad for them.
07/04/2014 3:15PM
RE: Who knew Murray wouldmake Regier look like he did a good job
You really need to crawl back under your rock, where you belong, you are CLUELESS!
07/04/2014 3:56PM
With any luck..
People, with even a tiny bit of luck Darcy would be the GM of a two time Stanley Cup Champion...look back on it..they were that close.
07/04/2014 4:53PM
Re: With any luck...
All he needed to do was a couple of trades at the deadline those years and that might have happened. There was no depth to fulfill what happened, especially against Carolina losing all those defensemen. A good GM would have prepped...What if there are injuries? Who do I have to fill the role in case something happens? That wasn't in Rochester. Losing to the Senators, well, that one was on Miller giving up that clunker to Alfredsson in overtime.
07/04/2014 4:58PM

Grandmas baked beans and Genny Cream Ales??? Now that's disgusting. A bad mix.

Maple Leafs
The Leafs will never win a Cup again due to the child molestation carried out at the Maple Leaf Gardens. Harold Ballard knew that it was happening and did nothing to stop it. Some say he even encouraged it. Call it a curse, or whatever, but a cloud hangs over that entire organization. Read it on Google. Toronto is the center of the molestation universe.

Future 'GR
It will be all twitter and no radio. What a blessing that'll be.
07/04/2014 9:08PM
The only GM worse than Regier over the last 20 years.....
Was Don Maloney, the guy who hired Regier on with the Islanders years ago and who just hired Regier this week. I pity Coyotes fans. If they already had a sad sack franchise that was not committed to winning, then I can't even think of a word that describes how stupid, pathetic and out of touch that organization is now. Much better time now to be a Sabres fan.

Son, I'm gonna tell you this one time.....stay off the drugs if you want to get anywhere in this world. They have already killed half your brain.

Darcy-- scrub
Ok... what a inferior gm he was... to think cutting briere, drury, jp dumont, for scrubs like maxim/kotalik/connely/ etc is absolutely insane and shows how inferior a GM he was. What phoenix sees in him is beyond me. Oh, did i forget ehroff and leino signings?? One of the worst GM's in recent history... We HAD Hasek and yet he couldn't add a few offensive threats to put us over the top in 99... total scrub GM and I hope he fails under Maloney... Darcy, thanks for making us sabres fans miserable for 15 yrs
07/05/2014 3:42AM
I post on another board with people who really know hockey...
and everyone of them praise Darcy's work here. ALL of them. I would tell you what that board was, but we don't want ignorant football fans posting there, so I won't.
07/05/2014 8:57AM
One More thing
For those who defend Darcy as having done a good job as GM: from the time that he was fired, 7 NHL teams also fired GM's or the equivalent position. Not a single one ever even considered Darcy for an interview(don't kid yourselves...he would have jumped at any one of them). Tells you everything you need to know about his reputation around the league. As an asst GM with a boss and specific responsibilities but not the final say, I can imagine that he has skills that are useful, but even there he had to go to Phoenix to work for an old friend/crony. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Darcy's Legacy
Is Bob Corkum and other bold, trade-deadline moves.
07/05/2014 6:00PM

The one who knows hockey on here is the guy from my armchair. That guy is good. Hang in there. Watch for his postings. Smart dude and great calls.

Hey Tim
How about an offer sheet for Ryan O'Reilly or a trade for his rights. You have the tools to do it. Would Patrick Roy want Grigorenko in a package with Myers???
07/05/2014 7:37PM
Re: Hey Tim
Yo cant be serious. 2 first round flops for O'reilly?? maybe one of your drunken fantasy league buddies might do that one but not in the real world. FYI- Patrick Roy is a coach not a GM. Coaches don't make trades.

Obviously you have a limited memory. Here's his real legacy - his drafts. His trades were even better. Here is a fact to prove my point above:
From 200-2010 the Sabres drafted more guys into the NHL than any other team! http://canucksarmy.com/2014/6/26/sham-sharron-takes-over-all-30-draft-tables Time for you "hockey experts" to eat crow.

Darcy Let Briere and Drury Walk
That is all I have to say about that. What about matching Edmonton's offer to Vanek? At that point, he should have been able to read the tea leaves and taken all those picks. Vanek turned out to be a disappointment.

Maybe that will cause walmart guy to end it all and make the world a better place.
07/06/2014 7:14PM
so funny
The people saying darcy drafted so well are really funny. Dennis Wideman? lol, sure Darcy drafted him but he was never signed. Darcy is a los-er, he only made a trade when a guy was done or in last year of his contract, that never gave buffalo full value in a trade. If you are a GM for 17 years I'm sure we could all hit it a few times, Larry Quinn forced Darcy to make the Drury trade. What kind of small market GM let so many guys walk out the door with zero in return? All his stu-pid comments, he was so terr-ible with the fans tell us we needed to be educated etc. So happy he is gone, I'd rather not remember him.

Congratulations!
Darcy was a serviceable GM who pulled off some great trades and did well while serving under 5 ownership groups (Knox, Rigas, NHL/Bankruptcy, Golisano and Pegulla). All ownership groups except for Pegulla were financially strapped.
07/09/2014 7:29PM
Re: Congratulations
Pfffffft...NOPE. Get off the crack habit. You're making excuses for the bum. Darcy was good at one thing though. That was missing lots and lots of boats on transactions.
