Montreal shuts out Sabres 2-0

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Hello once again from the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, high atop ice level at First Niagara Center. The Buffalo Sabres have been on the wrong side of a losing streak as of late, and look to change their fortunes against the Montreal Canadiens.

Neither team skated this morning because both clubs played last night. The blue and gold lost on Long Island, in what would have been the his first game against the Sabres since being dealt to the Islanders in exhange for Matt Moulson and draft picks. Neither player is still with those two teams, and Vanek makes his return to downtown Buffalo with the Habs.

If you would like to chime in, please do so in the thread below. I will add my comments in between the scoring plays. And as always, you can get more on the game by giving Brian Koziol and me a follow on Twitter: @BrianWGR and @PatWGR

First Period

17:45 - Jamie McBain takes the first minor penalty of the game, and the Sabres are looking to kill it off and keep Montreal from stealing away early momentum.

15:19 - Buffalo kills off the penalty with relative ease. Just two shots so far from the Habs, and no real good scoring chances on Jhonas Enroth as of yet.

9:50 - I have to give credit to the Sabres game presentation staff for the tribute video they showed during the TV timeout for Thomas Vanek. After the Jason Pominville fiasco that Darcy Regier created, the team has honored the deserving former team members like Lindy Ruff, and others.

5:19 - CANADIENS GOAL. It was a mad scrum in front of Jhonas Enroth, and it looked like Dale Weise just nudged the puck across the goal line before Enroth copuld stop it. The war room in Toronto confirmed the call on the ice as a "good goal." 1-0 MTL.

3:53 - CANADIENS GOAL. An unfortunate bounce off of Chad Ruhwedel's skate puts the puck in the back of the Sabres net, and has the home team down by a pair. Bad luck for a team searching for anything good to happen on this five-game losing streak. 2-0 MTL

End of Period

Second Period

17:48 - Not a good way to start the middle stanza as Nicolas Deslauriers takes a high sticking minor penalty.

12:29 - Not much action going on in this period. Shots on goal are 3-1, Montreal and that is with a Canadiens power play in he mix.

7:31 - The best chance of the period, easily, for the Sabres came with Matt Ellis right at the side of Dustin Tokarski. The Buffalo forward had a couple whacks at the puck before Tokarski denied him and sent the puck out of harms way. The Montreal netminder has made all 14 stops to this point.

4:35 - Enroth comes up big, robbing Gallagher of his second goal of the night. The Montreal forward was in the slot in perfect position but Enroth slid over to make a big save and keep his team down by just two.

3:51 - Enroth was hurt as Gallagher was dumped right into his lap thanks to McBain. Nathan Lieuwen, who was recalled on an emergency basis earlier today, is now in goal.
