Hurricanes Hold Off Sabres 4-3

Eric Staal and Alexander Semin both recorded three-point nights, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 victory over the Sabres on Tuesday. Cody Hodgson scored twice for Buffalo in the loss.

Carolina raced out to a 1-0 lead on Jiri Tlusty's 11th goal of the season, redirecting a Staal shot into the Buffalo net as Ryan Miller fought to see through a Tyler Myers screen. The assist marked a milestone for Staal -- his 600th career point in the NHL.

The Hurricanes held the Sabres to just six shots during the opening period and carried their one-goal lead into the 2nd, where Joe Corvo made it a 2-0 game. With Cody Hodgson in the box for holding the stick, Corvo let one rip that found its way under the Buffalo crossbar. Moments later, Miller prevented the score from becoming 3-0, robbing Alexander Semin on a 2-on-0 Hurricanes break. The Sabres pressured 3rd string goaltender, Justin Peters, with a few quality chances toward the end of the period, but were denied each time. Buffalo's best chance to score came late in the 2nd when Peters extended his arm across the goalline, taking away an open net from Thomas Vanek.

Buffalo finally got on the board just 25 seconds into the 3rd period on Cody Hodgson's 9th. The Sabres forward stuffed a shot past Peters to pull Buffalo within a goal, but Jussi Jokinen put the Hurricanes back up by two less than a minute later. After sitting as a healthy scratch for the Sabres' last five games, T.J. Brennan picked up his first goal of the season coming on a power play bomb from the blueline. Brennan's goal came just as a 5-on-3 opportunity expired, but Jamie McBain was still in the box, snapping an 0 for 14 slide with the man advantage for Buffalo.

Carolina went back up by two goals only 1:40 later on Semin's 6th. He took a cross-zone feed from Staal and let a shot rip directly at the top of the faceoff circle, a shot that found its way to the back of the Sabres net. Buffalo made it a 4-3 game in the final minute on Hodgson's 2nd of the evening. The Sabres forward made a couple of nice moves heading into the Hurricanes zone and beat Peters cleanly. Carolina was able to hang on, however, for the victory, sending Buffalo to 9-13-2 (20 pts.).

After being held to only six shots on net in the opening period, the Sabres peppered Peters with 16 during the 2nd and 18 in the final frame, but the 3rd stringer stood tall. Buffalo is back in action on Thursday at New Jersey. Hear the call on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

The Sabres
SMELL
03/05/2013 10:00PM
This Team is Still a Joke!
Allowing a shorthanded 2 on 0 breakaway. Can't beat a 3rd string goalie! This team is nothing more than beer league. I can't wait for this season to end and Regier to be shown the door!

Unbeleivable - That Myers (Minus) Touch
I have been a loyal sabres fan since 1971...guess who was on the ice for 3 Carolina goals albeit one was on the penalty? Yep, you guessed it, another night out of about 17 this season with unbelivievable atrocious decisions, positioning and plays by Mr. Minus Myers...he has the minus touch...just another replay of how he's been the same in about 17 of the games he has played so far. Its to the point where it is ridiculuous. Sure looks like more like Mike Wilson and turning into a another Darcy bust. Why not move him for some draft picks...I'm sure there are others on the farm team that can play better than him at this level? That leads to the heart of the matter. Dear Mr. Black and Pegula I hope that you recognize we are witnessed 2 stanley ciup contenders on sunday and today (rangers and canes) and recognize what separates them from the sabres: the effort is there but the size (strength, leverage, and positioning) and reach are too often missing...their guys guys can skate and outreach and outposition our guys on the puck. That's one of the main reasons for lack of offensive and defensive zone puck possession. We have a few size guys (like Myers and Vanek) but the few the sabres have are either one dimensional or severaly lacking in other skills, namely adequate speed. If you want the cup you need to rework the roster to get rid of some more of these undersized guys (Gerbe, Leopold, Pominville)and guys that have too many holes in their game (Myers, Regehr, Vanek, Pominville), whether it be poise, discipline, speed, physicality. Yes, I included Vanek and Myers, due to their penchant for poor desicionmaking, including Vaneks poor choice leading to a carolina 2 on 0 breakaway while the sabres were on a power play. Right now as constituted the sabres wouldn't last more than 5 games to the rangers or canes unless they sustained significant amount of injuries. Its now 42 years and counting without a cup, its time to act and get the ship turned in the right direction...it should start with Regier's dismissal. One of his biggest faults is an inability to shed the deadweight before it becomes an albatross. And I haven't even gotten to Ville Leino and Bob Corkum. In upcoming games you will hear the catcalls from me and others grow: "Darcy must go."
03/05/2013 10:20PM
Remember When
Semin & Staal werre available as FA a year or so ago. Carolina made the moves....we didn't
03/05/2013 10:21PM
same thing again
this team is not good enough.change the coach again you gonna have the same result.this team is to soft.darcy is doing nothing because is they only one that believe this tean can compete against the best in the league.
03/05/2013 10:34PM
When will this sorry team, aka the midgets of NHL, have the new GM??
When will the new GM come to build a robust cup-contending team?????
03/05/2013 10:46PM
embarassing
How can you lose to a third string goaltender. This team needs some major changes. Time to change this lineup.
03/05/2013 10:52PM
Mr. Invisible
A game after answering the MIA call with a goal in NYC Drew Stafford went back to his more familiar role of Mr. Invisible in the loss at Carolina. Stafford skated almost 13 uneventful minutes in the game, his usual for the season and also put up his usual 0-0-0 stat line. Mind you, Stafford is no longer going up against teams # 1 or even #2 lines most nights since he has been relegated to playing with Grigorenko and Hecht the past several games. He's largely skating against 3rd and 4th liners and still failing to even be noticeable most nights. He spent a grand total of :51 on the PP tonight....same as Gerbe. How embarrassing has that got to be? If there is anybody who could use a change of scenery more than Stafford it may be the fans who have been watching this $4mm player float through the majority of the last two years.
03/05/2013 10:59PM
Peters ELITE!!!... ROLSTON AFRAID TO BENCH Miller? NEWSFLASH: IT'S ENROTH TIME!!
Its the same old story with "THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING GOALIE"!!! Giving up soft goals at the worst times. I thought part of Ruff's problem was using MR SOFTEE too much! What the HECHT is Rolston doing?? BENCH THIS SIEVE! IT'S ENROTH TIME!! FOREEVER FOREEXTENDING REGEIR 4!
03/05/2013 11:08PM
Hurricanes more potent than Lake Effect Snow
The Hartford Whalers, I mean Carolina Hurricanes continue to break hearts in WNY. Stanley Cup Score. Carolina 1 Buffalo 0 .

03/05/2013 11:22PM
hahaha
this team belongs in the minors. miller gets outplayed by opposition goalie in every single game.hahahaha.keep spending on nhl
03/05/2013 11:22PM
Another back-up goalie beats the sabres
They are the back-up goalie's dream team. Amazing how many back-ups outplay our "elite" guy.
03/06/2013 12:00AM
And Regier just keeps going, on & on & on & on & on.
There is nothing enjoyable left in Hockey Heaven. Pegula has created a huge mess. I guess he thought it was much easier than this, lol.
03/06/2013 6:37AM
Bumsfan
When you have to play "deperate" to score and the other team can just play normal and beat you it's because you're team is just not good enough.
03/06/2013 6:39AM
Re:Mr. Invisible
I could not have said it better, Stafford needs to go he is a terrible waste of money and a roster spot. Good job Darcy, another great deal you pulled off, you joke.
03/06/2013 7:25AM
Ron sounds too much like Darcy
I don't think I could listen to those 2 talk to each other, what a boring monotone conversation. I think they both need to go and start the Darcy Dynasty in another location.
03/06/2013 7:38AM
Sabres loss, no surprise
We Sabres fans are all insane. We keep seeing the same thing from Darcy Regier's roster of tin men and expecting a different result. The lack of action by upper management say's it all. Stay the coarse and status Que. The term "Hockey Heaven" makes me queasy. Buffalo sports teams have become so irrelevant that it's hard to remember when one of the Teams was good.
03/06/2013 8:02AM
3rd string?
are you kidding me? this team can't get the puck past a 3rd stringer? I have said it before and so has everyone else, the problem with this team was not only Ruff but Regier as well. He put this team together and it is so far away from Stanley Cup contention. Regier should go ASAP. Mr Pegula it is time for you to take the blinders off and fire him.
03/06/2013 8:14AM
joe s from florida
dear friends the problem with the Sabres is all of you at this point have to stop and think what is left to do to fire this clown. STOP BUYING THE FREAKING TICKETS. With the house full all the time who cares if they put garbage on the ice thank you Sabres for making my life so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!miserable.
03/06/2013 8:27AM
Losing respct for Terry
I have no R-E-S-P-E-C-T for Darcy and am losing what little I have left for Terry. This team is a mess and a joke.
03/06/2013 8:48AM
okay we changed the coach now we need to work on the team.
Why would you not call up Leggio and give him a game? Miller is going to need to be rested. It is way past time to move a defensemen out of here for whatever you can get. Hell I would move Regehr and Leopold both for whatever I could get. I like Regehr but he is past due. Let's admit that was another poor signing. Other then Ott who has Regier brought in that has worked out. Last night I cannot count the number of times 2 hurricanes went in the corner with one Sabre and the canes came out with the puck. If you are a leader of the team like Vanek you cannot make the play he made at the blue line or pick up another penalty in the last two minutes of a close game. How many times has the guy done that? No wonder he had a problem with Ruff!
03/06/2013 8:49AM
One sentence to describe the game
Mister Softee at his worst out played by a third string goaltender.
03/06/2013 8:53AM
Any trades yet?
FIRE REGEIR!!! I hate this team.
03/06/2013 9:02AM
goalies
i thought with the coaching change we would see better use of the back-up goaltender.miller has faced more shots than anyone in the league;we were facing a 3rd string goalie;and enroth had a good history with carolina.now miller did not play poorly but he played tired.made some great saves but i bet hed like to have the winner back.he cant play every game.
03/06/2013 9:15AM
But for some missed chances and a blind save ...
... the haters wouldn't be out in force today. Objectively, I would say the Sabres are still searching for a complete game. The skating and speed improved towards the 3d period. The quickened pace of that period looked like playoff hockey. The most glaring faults were way too many missed passes down-ice and mishandling of the puck in the d-zone. Still not enough standing up at the blue line. The opposition shouldn't get so much space in the middle nor be deep in our zone that long. Not much open-ice checking from either team last night, and I expected Buffalo to be a little more physical. To be fair, Carolina played solid and will probably go deep in the playoffs. If only Vanek hadn't taken so long (it seemed) to make that open net shot ...
03/06/2013 9:16AM
More & More Disappointing
If you sit back and really watch what's going on in all of this years games so far....> I have come to the conclusion that the Sabres just can't compete against the other NHL teams. The Sabres are like a a team of skaters learning the gameagainst professional hockey players. Last night - Peters (3rd string goalie) made Miller look bad. and it dosen't end there !!!
03/06/2013 9:34AM
Miller
He is worse than last season. The team sucks, but he is part of it. He sucks too. You guys at the station always make excuses for him. I had enough of Miller. Its time for a new beginning after the last game of the season. For now I hope they lose the rest of their games and fire the GM first after the season. Let a new GM get rid of 80% of this roster or whatever. Brian Burke can clean up this mess and do the job right. For now, just keep losing. I'm done with this season. Darcy must go!
03/06/2013 9:53AM
Closer than you think?
Here’s an amazing stat; The Sabres have played 24 games this season and have 13 losses. Of those 13 losses, 10 of them have been by only one goal! (if you include the few empty net goals as 1 goal losses). The truth is; they’re really close. If only ‘half’ of those one goal losses were just ties (you wouldn’t have to win the game) – you wouldn’t even have to win the overtime – the extra 1 point from those ties would have us currently sitting atop of the standings. That’s how close we are.Blame the GM or whoever, but get the 2nd line scoring, win some face-offs, tighten up the ‘D’ and learn how to score goals when you have 30 plus shots in a game and they could win a lot of games!
03/06/2013 10:00AM
WGR sucks regarding this team
At 9-13-2, Keep on shilling this joke Howard, Jeremy, Hamilton, Sylvester, and the rest. Keep it going. You are all a pathetic joke!
03/06/2013 10:22AM
Pack it up, pack it in.
Sorry folks, this is it. A lost season. Gone. Say buh-bye. Im gonna watch the Buffalo Sabres because I do love hockey but my hope for a competitive season is gone. I wont pretend to have the answers like many others but I will make one suggestion. Lets not make the same mistake the Bills made, bring up the youngins!! Lets see what the kids from the Roc have to offer. At least we may see some hockey played with heart!!
03/06/2013 10:41AM
Myrers ...NEEDS TO EFFECT OPPONENTS MOVEMENT
Afraid to offend someone by touching them or what.
03/06/2013 10:49AM
RE: Unbeleivable - That Myers (Minus) Touch
Really? The Sabres witnessed TWO Stanley Cup Contenders in the Rangers and Canes? The Rangers aren't much better than Buffalo and have a similarly horrendous Power Play! You are a HORRIBLE judge of hockey. STOP POSTING AND FIND ANOTHER HOBBY!
03/06/2013 10:50AM
Soooooooooooooooooo
About what you can expect with this make up. Soft on the puck, lack of desire to go to the net and pay the price. Time to blow it up and start over. If it were not for Ott, I don't believe they would have won half the games they have. Meyers? What a disapointment. The defense is atrocious. Time to say good bye to 3 of them, anyway. Might as well play the Amerk guys and see what they can do. Grigorenko should be playing a regular shift at center. Ennis has the desire but not the heft to compete for the puck.
03/06/2013 10:53AM
RE: hahaha
Miller gets outplayed by opposition goalies? You do realize if Miller was on ANY other team, said team would be much better! Miller bails this team out time and time again. See: Teams that let up 2 on 0 chances while on the Power Play. It is not Millers fault that his 5 man front plays weak on the puck and screens him regularly rather than taking the body on a guy or eating the shots. He also faces way more shots per night than any other goalie in the league. TRY AGAIN! YOUR POST IS WEAKER THAN THIS BUFFALO TEAM!
03/06/2013 11:09AM
RE:Peters elite?
how can you even begin to blame Miller for last night's loss? do you really think Enroth would have fared any better last night after his sieve performace in Carolina earlier this season?
03/06/2013 12:19PM
Any trades yet part 2?
I'm starting to enjoy listening to elevator music I downloaded on iTunes and watching this team get worse. EXTEND REGEIR AND I'LL KEEP PLAYING IT!!! Don't answer the phone, ignore faxes, ignore texts, and all messages Darcy and keep listening to those tunes like I am now watching this pathetic joke. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! EXTEND THE BUM!!!
03/06/2013 12:29PM
the joksters
Miller should asked to be traded, with the team he has in front of him. At the other end of the ice the goal tender was giving up huge rebounds, with no saber in sight to knock one in.Possession time should be kept track of. Carolina two and a half periods, Buffalo was fortunate to get half a period. It's like a silent movie comedy watching them with the puck in their defensive zone. Here you take the puck, no I don't want it. Offensively no better. Let's get the puck and skate into the corner, not to the net. there we can lose the battle along the boards. How exciting!!
03/06/2013 12:41PM
Peters was awesome
I wish we had him. He's got some Hasek in him. Keep an eye on him. What would the Canes want for him?
03/06/2013 1:01PM
Closer then we think?
that is laughable. I don't care how many one goal games you have seen. Do you really think last nights game was close? The score may have been because Miller keeps them in games. What other NHL team do you see giving up a 2 on 0? I can answer for you none! Who else consistently takes bad penalties at the end of games? None! Who else misses the net with as many shots as these guys? None!
03/06/2013 1:47PM
Bashing the goalie
This is done by people who know nothing about hockey. Without Miller this team would be in dead last in the entire league. Pominville, Stafford, Gerbe, Hecht, Leino, Leopold, to name a few, are not good enough. This team needs size, more high end skill, physical forecheckers, guys willing to backcheck, guys willing to work and sacrifice. Put another way, this roster is not good.
03/06/2013 2:30PM
Lets build Leggio
Is there any reason why Buffalo couldn't sent Enroth down to the minors and give Leggio a shot? So what if some team claimed him he is doing nothing for the Sabres. What we're seeing here with Myers and Stafford is that the team paid them big $$$$ and there is NO return from the players on ice performance.....Miller wasn't the reason for this loss, the team infront of him is where the issue(s) are
03/06/2013 4:37PM
lindy ruff
to all the people that said lindy was the problem now you see it was not the problem.darcy give im a soft team with no defense and is afraid to make a trade because is in love with is player.look at the player he took from the draft.lindy is a very good coach when he as the player with some passion.not only for the money
03/06/2013 7:33PM
know what you are talking about
the people who blame miller for this mess are lost.do you even watch the games?
03/06/2013 10:00PM
RE: Unbeleivable - That Myers (Minus) Touch
I have been a loyal sabres follower since 1971 and again I repeat: the rangers and canes are cup contenders and think about how the advantages they had in outbattling the sabres for the puck then scoring. The sabres are akin to the opponents of the Jim Kelly era Buffalo Bills. Those bills teams would sometimes take their foot off the throttle (lose concentration) and would let the opponent back in the game and then get serious and turn up the concentration and with their overwhelming skill, throttle their opponents (in most instances). Watch Myers when he is on the ice, in particular when he is in the defensive zone. Ask yourself, is he making a difference in puck possession? Based it on his relative position/location on the ice, his speed & physicality, and his decisions when he is trying to retrieve the puck or stop the play from happening. I have watched a lot ofn hockey and am astonished to see how often he is either out of position or outbattled for the puck. He's Mike Wilson in spades.
