A brutal day for the Bills in DC ended with Kevin Kolb being checked for concussion-like symptoms, injuries for Stephon Gilmore and Da'Norris Searcy, and an ugly 30-7 loss to the Redskins.
With EJ Manuel out of the lineup, many viewed Saturday's game as a chance for Kevin Kolb to stake his claim for the starting quarterback job. Kolb, however, threw only 4 passes and left the game prior to the end of the opening quarter due to concussion-like symptoms. That cleared the way for rookie Jeff Tuel to step in under center. Tuel, who had been sharp in earlier preseason action, finished 10 of 17 for 62 yards.
Buffalo also suffered injuries to Gilmore (hand) and Searcy (head). Both left the field late in the first half and were evaluated in the locker room.
Playing without their top two quarterbacks, the Redskins displayed an efficient and, at times, explosive offense for most of the afternoon. Rex Grossman got the scoring started early, leading Washington to the end zone on its first drive of the game. Grossman capped the 10-play, 86-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon to put the Redskins ahead 7-0.
Buffalo responded by going 56 yards in 10 plays, finished off by a CJ Spiller touchdown from 2 yards out. After grabbing his right knee, and giving his team and fans a brief scare, Spiller walked off the field under his own power. The team announced their prize RB was fine and he re-entered the game. Spiller finished as the Bills' leading rusher with 39 yards on 8 carries.
Up 10-7 in the second quarter, the Redskins extended their lead to 10 points on a 14-yard QB keeper by Pat White, who finished the day with 26 rushing yards. Through the air, White went 7 of 14 for 96 yards while his teammate, Grossman, finished 11 of 21 for 171 yards and a touchdown pass. The Redskins added to their lead late in the first half with a 53-yard Forbath field goal. He added another in the third and Keiland Williams found the end zone from a yard out at the 11:05 mark of the final quarter to make it 30-7.
Washignton finished with 477 total yards while the Bills managed only 154. With the loss, the Bills fall to 2-1 in the preseason. Their final game before the Week 1 opener against New England will take place Thursday at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the Detroit Lions.
Earlier in the day, WCJB-TV in Gainesville, FL, reported that Spiller's step-grandfather went on a shooting spree Saturday morning, ending in his own suicide. Hubert Allen, Jr., allegedly wounded two men and murdered two others before killing himself. Police have not yet named a motive.
