Gamenight: Sabres And Kings Tied 3-3 In Shootout

Los Angeles (WGR550)  -- The Buffalo Sabres twice held a lead on the Los Angeles Kings, but could not hold on and fell 4-3 in a shootout Thursday night at Staples Center.  Dustin Brown scored the winner in the shootout to propel the Kings to the victory.

Brad Richardson gave the Kings a 1-0 lead after redirecting a shot from the point past Ryan Miller.  Drew Doughty and Wayne Simmonds assisted on the goal that came right off a faceoff to Miller's left.  The Sabres had a chance to tie the game but hit the cross bar, despite getting the puck past Jonathan Quick but it did not go in.  Each team racked up 10 shots on goal in the opening period.

The Sabres came out swinging to start the second period with Clarke MacArthur's 13th goal of the season to tie the Kings 1-1.  The goal came twenty-two seconds into the middle stanza.  Paul Gaustad and Toni Lydman were credited with assists on the even strength tally.  Thomas Vanek notched his 14th of the season to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead later in the period.  Tim Connolly extended his point streak to 14 games with an assist on the goal.  Jason Pominville picked up the other helper.

The Kings had a goal disallowed after Oscar Moller directed the puck past Miller with his fist.  The goal was first awarded on the ice, but video review overturned the call to keep the score 2-1 Sabres.  Sean O'Donnell tied the score with a shot from the point that Miller never saw go by him.  The Kings had a man camped right in front of the Sabres goalie as the game became tied 2-2.  Doughty and Anze Kopitar were given assists on the goal.

The Sabres opened the third period the same way they started the second, with a goal.  Craig Rivet scored his first goal of the season on a point shot that clipped the bottom of the cross bar and beat Quick.  Pominville and Connolly assisted on the goal.  Ryan Smyth tied the game 3-3 by directing the puck into the net with his skate.  There was an extended review of the goal, but it was determined Smyth did not kick the puck into the net.  Jarret Stoll and Dustin Brown assisted on the equalizer.

Neither team could score in the overtime period to force a shootout.  Kopitar opened the shootout with a goal which was answered by Drew Stafford.  Brown scored in the third round and Connolly could not answer.

The Sabres were 1 for 3 on the power play, while L.A. went 0 for 3.

The Sabres continue on their West Coast road trip Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. at San Jose on the Sabres Radio Network, including the flagship WGR - Sports Radio 550 and wgr550.com.

DUMP POMINVILLE!!!!!
Not even close to worth his 5 mill per year contract. Plus I hate that stupid Pominville population sign. Don't have to do much to update it this year huh guys? We should've picked up Gaborik last summer at all costs. I knew he would light up the east and he would've been a force for us. Pominville, Roy, and Vanek are becoming dead weights that get paid too much

Mr Softee again!!!
hey where that elite performance? Truly vezina eh? well sheep collect those pop cans because larry demands your money for playoffs! take that third mortgage out and wit for the flame out! Hey who cares about HAiti, Tommy G needs and deserves the money! Life is about being a Sabre fan!!!! BBBAAAAAAHHHHHH
01/22/2010 7:15AM
Softee???
What?????
01/22/2010 7:37AM
Calm down
Dude, calm down. Geeze, its way to early to be upset...especially on a Friday!
01/22/2010 8:07AM
Softee Douche
I like how everytime the Sabre lose that tool comes on and says "wheres the elite performance?" No goalie plays lights out every night. NHL analysts rank Miller as a top 5 goalie, I'll take their word over some douche who undoubtedly works at a Wendy's.
01/22/2010 8:09AM
re: calm down
well what fun would that be? It's friday and the beer is awaiting! so is Darcy doing nothing and the team flaming in the playoffs and the media then making excuses because they are on the payroll and can't accept managment and miller aren't good enough

RE: DUMP POMINVILLE
Blogger is 100% correct...

Re: Softee
Go away, troll. Nobody wants your idiocy here.

re: dump pominville
really? is this the flavor of the month? what's next? some of you losers are such idiots. the abres have some of the most balanced scoring top to bottom in the league and some of you retards want to ship these guys out? for who? gaborik? please!!! some of you people need to focus on the bills more if you like negativity and misery that much
01/22/2010 9:28AM
Question..
Am I the only one who hates west coast games? Sub par announcers..sub par video feed..sub par Ice..dont have hockey where they dont have Ice naturally!
01/22/2010 9:43AM
RE: DUMP POMINVILLE
Agreed. Next time the Sabres play the Rangers, watch Gaborik and you will see what an actual talented goal scorer looks like
01/22/2010 10:03AM
MILLER IS AVERAGE
Miller's performance last night in the shoot out shows how average he is. All this year Miller has played poorly in the shootouts. This is a good test for how good a goalie is because you have no one else to look at other than the shooter and the goalie. I don't think Hasek, Broduer, Patrick Roy, or other elite goalies would ever play so consistently poorly on shoot outs. Miller has never been and will never be an "elite" goaltender in the NHL. Ryan Miller's 2009-2010 stats are slipping and is no longer #1 in any category. And of course Miller's career stats are all around #14 amoung active goaltenders which proves he is average at best! Wait until the olympics. Just wait. You will see how average Miller is. I know all the Sabre die hards will blame the US team in front of him. But that is all the Sabre fans can do is make excuses for the players and the team and the results at the end of each year. 39 years with no Cup.....that says it all.
01/22/2010 10:14AM
Not upset, annoyed...
I'm a Sabres fan in Boston, so I can only listen to the games, but it seems like they let a point get away from them last night. It was this kind of point dropping/SO losses that cost the Sabres the last two years. However, their elevated status inthe division this year makes the blown games less costly. 7 post-regular losses so far has me concerned, but then again it's Friday and I'm probably just nit-picking. Go Sabres Miller for Vezina
01/22/2010 10:21AM
Don't Feed the Troll
He's doing this to get a reaction out of people. Don't feed the troll. Everyone knows it's Miller's Vezina to lose.
01/22/2010 10:27AM
Gaborik
Yea sure...we had the cap room for Gaborik. Please. And he wanted to come here. Please. And dump Pominville? Fine! To WHO? Who wants to take our overpaid underperforming Pominville? It's no different than last year when everyone was screaming DUMP HECHT! DUMP TALLINDER! Hey, Darcy tried! No one wanted our overpaid underperforming Hecht and Tallinder. Mercifully they're both having decent years this year but just because a trade works in NHL 09 doesn't mean it works in real life guys.
01/22/2010 10:33AM
Miller
Is back to sucking in shootouts like two years ago.
01/22/2010 10:42AM
Re: Softee Douche
He may work at Wendy's, but it is quite clear from his Haiti comment that he spends 100% of his $5.15 an hour on charitable causes.
01/22/2010 10:42AM
Reiger...
Stop coming on GR and telling us how great things are so we dont expect any trades or additions, just shut up! Certainly the sky isnt falling, but the team shows you where it needs help now address it for the REAL playoff run, without help on the PP, this team is in trouble. Miller is far from Mr Softee but is surprising how his shoot out game has gone backwards again, he was solid last year but in previous years was not so good either. Funny how Pominville gets out skated and hustled constantly but never rides the bench? Nice back pass the other night to setup the Anaheim winning goal to....
01/22/2010 11:02AM
pommy vanek roy
what does vanek have to do to get out of the doghouse in this city? he has 2 goals 4 assists in last 4 games what does the guy need to do? Everytime he scores everyone says its a garbage goal and he was lazy on the play. Yea hes played like a$$ this season but were winnning. Pommy is actually having a way better year this year than last season i have no problem with pommy however hes effort in that shootout was horrible, roy is my least favorite he turns the puck over all the time but he does come through clutch a lot
01/22/2010 12:07PM
Kovalchuck
Get him
01/22/2010 12:18PM
Re Mr. Softee
most like this is some poor loser that lives in his parents basement and never even tried out for a sports team...the closest thing to hockey that person sees is on his/her xbox 360!!! so dude shut up get a life and a real job
01/22/2010 12:25PM
CHRIS DRURY ?
why is Chris Drury on TEAM USA over Tim Connolly?
01/22/2010 12:44PM
West Coast Trip Overall So Far
Can't complain about goal scoring, but can about below average defensemen and average goaltending.
01/22/2010 12:54PM
Got the lead in the 3rd then
1-2-2 AGAIN! Scrap it Ruff! Go for the kill!
01/22/2010 1:24PM
Losers...
Yes LOSERS
01/22/2010 3:11PM
Hockey?
The losers are the people that come on here after they lose in a shootout and want to change the team. Obviously they were out of gas at the end of that game. They are play every other night and on the west coast!
01/22/2010 3:19PM
CAP SHMAP!
Thats what I say
01/22/2010 3:23PM
I said...............
We should have made a move for Gaborik in the offseason and couldve made room for him. But Larry Quinn doesnt have a crush on him like he has on Roy and Pominville. They're about as useless as the shafts on some of you guys
01/22/2010 3:50PM
Re:Hockey?
Pure excuse. You are brainwashed listening to GR and Lindy. They didn't have this problem out west in the 70's moron!
01/22/2010 4:15PM
Trade
I like this team but they need to get a PP QB. If it wasn't for that darn offer sheet from Edm, we would probably be trading for Gilbert or Surrey. Instead, I think we may go for Joni Pittkanen from Carolina.
01/22/2010 4:26PM
Mr. Frosty
Since the guy who thinks Miller is Mr. Softy works at Wendys, we should all refer to him as Mr. Frosty from now on.
01/22/2010 4:29PM
RE: Trade
Pitkanen and Whitney for Butler, do it
01/23/2010 1:17PM
Attn: Mr, Softee Drivers
Starting early summer, wearing a Miller jersey driving the truck in neighborhoods will be required.
01/23/2010 6:40PM
Shootout Needs to Go!
Enough with the Shootout. It's ridiculous to decide games based on a skills competition. Extend the 4 on 4 OT to 7 or 8 minutes and play freaking hockey to decide games. award a point to each team if still tied and move on. I get the "casual" fan angle as to why it was implemented, but it has had its run.
