NFL Draft Report

By Joe Buscaglia

LB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma

Ronnell Lewis, #56
6'2", 245 lbs., 21 years old
Dewar, OK
2011: 60 tackles, 13 TFL, 5.5 sacks, INT, FF
2010: 36 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 3 sacks, INT
2009: 22 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 sack, 2 FF

- Played a defensive end/linebacker hybrid role for the last season and a half that highlighted his pass rushing and drop-back underneath coverage.
- A big effort guy. Has a good burst and acceleration when he sees a clear lane to the ball carrier and brings a solid wrap-up on a tackle to go along with it.
- Has a nice shoulder dip move to try and get around the much larger offensive tackles.
- Nice straight-line speed will offer some versatility to teams.

- Struggles in change of direction. It could hinder him in man-to-man coverage, something he wasn't asked to do a ton of at Oklahoma.
- Shows a tendency to get eaten up by a bigger blocker when he can't depend on his outside move. Will struggle to get to the QB consistently in 1-on-1 matchups.
- Production at a school with elite talent limited to him not being on the field down-in, down-out.
- Injury history. Had knee surgery in 2010 that forced him to miss two games. Suffered a neck injury later that season and through the rest of his career.
- Held out of final three collegiate games due to academic problems.

Special Notes:
- Turns 22 in September.
- Declared for the NFL Draft as a junior.

Projection: 2nd to 3rd round
- The versatility and overall effort of Lewis is what will be the draw to him for teams. If he adds some weight he could be under consideration for a 3-4 OLB role, but I think his best fit would be in a 4-3 as a strongside linebacker that gets after the quarterback more often than not. Much like how the Broncos used Von Miller this past season. While his talent level isn't close to Miller, that would likely be his ideal placing.
