NFL Draft Report

By Joe Buscaglia

LB/S Lavonte David, Nebraska

Lavonte David, #4
Nebraska
6'0", 225 lbs., 22 years old
Miami, FL
2011: 133 tackles, 12 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 2 INT, 3 FF
2010: 152 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 6 sacks

PROS
- Elite speed for a linebacker. Great closing burst. An explosive player.
- A great feel for coverage responsibilities in both zone and man-to-man. Can stick to tight ends and make a play on the ball.
- Superb instincts helps him diagnose misdirection plays and be right there on the backside for a tackle.
- Always looks to strip the ball when the tackle is secured.

CONS
- Size will limit him as a linebacker in the NFL, might be best suited to be a safety.
- His speed will force him to overrun the play at times.
- Struggles to fight through the point of attack when locked in with a big blocker. Will get knocked off his feet a time or two.

Special Notes:
- JUCO transfer from Fort Scott CC in Kansas. Had to attend school there due to academic issues.
- Has done volunteer work with hospital visits for the Husker Heroes program.

Projection: 2nd to 3rd round
- Lavonte David is tremendously talented and the type of player that will be successful no matter where you put him. I think he's best suited to be a strong safety in the NFL, but a team in need of an explosive, productive weakside linebacker may give him a shot too. Will be a starter in the league.
