Tahir Whitehead, #2
Temple
6'1", 233 lbs., 21 years old
Newark, NJ
2011: 70 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 5 sacks, 4 FF
2010: 56 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 2 sacks, INT, 2 FF
2009: 30 tackles, 4.5 TFL, FF
2008: 7 tackles
PROS
- His most glaring attribute is his blitzing ability. Able to fire after the passer/runner with a nice closing burst.
- Great use of hands to not allow blockers to get inside his pads. Did this especially well against the bigger competition he faced, too.
- Looks in control, able to operate smoothly on the football field in diagnosing plays.
- Special teams contributor even though he was a starter.
CONS
- Not overly athletic. Will have some problems changing directions but not the worst at it, either.
- Isn't the fastest linebacker. Will use his hands and physicality more than his speed.
- Not overly dependable in man-to-man coverage.
- Size, plays as a strongside linebacker but is he big enough for it in the NFL?
Special Notes:
- Turns 22 in April.
Projection: 5th to 6th round
- Overall, I like Tahir Whitehead's game. I think he can be a solid player for a team that is in need of some linebacker depth and special teams help. He'll be a later round pick, but he has enough ability to make a roster.
