So I'm developing some things we actually know about the Bills, but I need the help of everyone. I'm going to put down some simple facts about what the Bills have and need, and you tell me what to change. My hope would be that by the offseason, we can feel pretty confident about what we want the new guy in charge to do.
Before we begin, does anyone have a respectable site that keeps NFL players under contract per team we could link here? Something like the almost incomparable NHLnumbers.com?
1. The Bills need to get a No. 1 quarterback in the offseason.
2. The Bills need to get a left tackle in the offseason.
3. The Bills need to get two new starting linebackers, or one and a respected veteran No. 4 (Let alone if they make the switch to 3-4. Goodness, me).
4. The following starters can absolutely continue to start next year (if they stay 4-3):
CB- Terrence McGee
S- Jairus Byrd
DT- Marcus Stroud
DT- Kyle Williams
DE- Aaron Schobel
CB- Leodis McKelvin
RB- Fred Jackson
G- Eric Wood
G- Andy Levitre
C- Geoff Hangartner
RT- Brad Butler
WR- Lee Evans
TE- Shawn Nelson
K- Rian Lindell
P- Brian Moorman
LS- Garrison Sanborn
5. The following starters or contributors are probably fall too far down on the "priority to find someone better" list:
LB- Kawika Mitchell
LB- Paul Posluszny
WR3- Josh Reed (UFA)
TE2- Derek Schouman
DT3- Spencer Johnson
6. If the Bills had better linebackers, or even a relatively healthy corps of linebackers, this defense would be adequate against the run. So start there in free agency.
(Linebacker is my favorite position -- during freshman football at Kenmore East, I wanted to be Chris Spielman or Chris Slade (seriously) -- so let me opine here. I really wanted the Bills to sign Demeco Ryans, but the Texans offered him Top-Five linebacker money in February and he declined. He's had a not-so-elite season this year. The list of free agent linebackers is extremely respectable/intriguing: http://www.footballsfuture.com/2010/fa/lb.html).
7. Time to say goodbye. You don't have to leave the league, but you gotta get out of here (via trade, release or walking). Good luck:
CB- Ashton Youboty
OL- Seth McKinney
QB- Trent Edwards
RB- Marshawn Lynch (Fine for the field, not for the locker room)
(EDIT NOTE: There has been a lot of reaction to this Lynch comment, so I'd love to clarify. I've loved Lynch as a running back up until this year, where he's been inconsistent. I used to love his personality, which was considered private and quirky up until some incidents made him look like private is just cold. He's still young (23), but is he good enough talent-wise to get past the fact that he's one mistake away from being suspended for a half-season or worse? Those are the things worth talking about. I don't understand for a minute the sentiment that Jackson is more talented, or that Lynch wouldn't run for 1,250 yards somewhere else. He's better than McGahee, and Willis put up 1,438 total yards and eight touchdowns his first year in Baltimore. You can navigate a bad offensive line as a QB. Not-so-much a RB).
LT- Jonathan Scott
WR- Roscoe Parrish
DT- John McCargo
8. FYI: Potential UFAs: DE Ryan Denney, OLB Chris Draft, S Todd Johnson, OG Seth McKinney, WR Terrell Owens, WR Josh Reed, S-LB Bryan Scott.
Potential RFAs: OLB Keith Ellison*, TE Derek Schouman, OT Jonathan Scott, S George Wilson*, CB Ashton Youboty*. (courtesy Pro Football Weekly)
Order of importance:
1. Reed
2. Schouman (provided he's healed right. Scary injury).
3. Draft (depth)
4. Denney (depth)
Anyone else is debatable. There is nothing universal about discussing Owens' potential role in 2010.
9. I think Ryan Fitzpatrick is an acceptable back-up quarterback.
Although Millen was awful last night, he was right about Stroud. He's been below average all year, and frankly takes off as many plays as TO. By the thrid round of the draft, the Bills should be looking at DL. (I'm assuming LB or OL first, then the other in the second, and no QB this year unless someone falls to round two or Tebow is available very late).
12/04/2009 9:08AM
What about..
T.O. - Lets keep him if we're going to be serious about next year
12/04/2009 9:13AM
RB
If Marshawn is traded or released, they're going to need some type of back up RB via free agency or the draft.
12/04/2009 9:19AM
RB
Completely agreed about keeping Freddie. The prblem is we do need another RB. good thing RB's are a dime a dozen. If we could get a 2nd (which wont happen) for Lynch, life would be great. Get a 3rd and a 5th and say fare well friend. Freddie is thefuture. Not only that, but Lynch isnt a large part of locker room.
12/04/2009 9:21AM
T.O has to want to stay here first
Before we resign him, we have to show him were seriuos about moving in the right direction. And getting him the ball
12/04/2009 9:21AM
TO hates Barfalo...
and I don't blame him this town and this team is dysfunctional!
12/04/2009 9:27AM
comon
nick no we dont want stroud we dont want any of the 3 linebackers and we dont want kelsay unless he will take a pay cut and be a backupbe real! we need at least 2 linebackers to replace pos and ellison. we need a real pass rusher not schobel. we need 2 tacles and a reciever who trys not to.there u want this to be a playoff team thats what u need - nothing less.and no i didnt forget the most important thing they need is to get a qb in the draft or try to pry vet from trade.
12/04/2009 9:29AM
...
i really think signing George Wilson should be a priority as well as the 4 guys mentioned. Wilson has played excellent the last couple games
12/04/2009 9:36AM
Fitz
Last throw was weak. We need a QB with arm strength.
12/04/2009 9:37AM
My Comments here....
1. I certainly agree the Bills need to get a No. 1 quarterback in the off-season, but I do not want to do something stupid to get one. IE: Reaching for Losman. If there is one available through the draft, then go for it, if not, there are several other areas to address and we can wait one more year.
2. Again, very true, the Bills need to get a left tackle in the off-season, but like QB, don't reach. I'm guessing we can get a game changing QB, LT or LB with our first pick without reaching.
3. Totally agree with you on LB, see response to numbers 1 & 2.
4. For the most part, agree with these players, some with notes. Stroud, up your game. Nelson, USE HIM.
5. Agree with one exception. Posluszny will get better with a better surrounding cast. Wouldn't throw a lot of money at him though.
6. Totally agree with you here. It seems to be a good year next year to make ourselves healthy at this position.
7. Very much agree with you here especially with your Lynch note.
8. LOL. Pretty said when these guys are your top for of UFA. Speaks a lot for the talent on this team. Not a Reed fan. Another position I believe we can fix in-house for the purpose of using the money we save to address elsewhere. 2-4 I'm with you. You can add the Lynch note to Owens. A very inconsistent player on the field and off. He is a ra-ra guy, but he also does quit on plays. Or should I say, does not give 100%.
9. With all our needs and thinking money, I'm fine with Ryan Fitzpatrick as an acceptable back-up quarterback.
10. I am actually looking forward to watching the rest of the season. So far, Fewell has done more then enough to keep my interest. Knowing Money will come into play in all of this, if we cannot get a "Proven" NFL coach in here, and I don't think guys like Haslett are 'proven', we would be MUCH better served investing that 10 million (LOL) coach money on our infrastructure. Proven Talent scouts, a NFL GM, and a O-Coordinator.
12/04/2009 9:42AM
Wrong Thought
I was thinking playoffs after the Miami game last week. Boy was I wrong. We really do suck!
12/04/2009 9:46AM
WR
I dont think we need to keep TO around. I think Steve Johnson and Hardy can fill the roll. We will need the TO cash for a LT and LB's. Many people have made the point that a decant QB can work with servicable receivers which I believe Johnson is and of course the jury is out on Hardy. Sign Josh reed; with Roscoe and TO gone you need the depth; that is if Reed wants to be hear after bein thrown to like 10 times this season. -MM
12/04/2009 9:46AM
T.O. won't stay. 2010 = Rebuilding Year
This season was supposed to be the breakout year, the year we finally shed the playoff drought. The only thing that might hold us back was our O-line.Yeah, we've seen how that turns outNext year will be a new coach, new QB, new systems/terminology on Offense and Defense. T.O. doesn't have many years left, he wants to win ASAP. T.O. is done after Jan. 3rd
12/04/2009 10:08AM
Coach/GM
I agree the search we should be on right now is not for a coach it should be for a GM. Lets be realistic were probably not gonna pull in Shanahan or Cowher tharefore we need a GM, someone who know the players. Maybe a top scout from New Orleans or NE. Let's not invest in a retread let get someone fresh who loves the game and spends more time at games than in an office. Sully's article was spot on ea`rlier in the week when he said we should hire an agency or a consultant of some kind to help Ralph and Russ find a GM and some football men. Look at Seattle; their GM stepped down on Thursday and they already hired a firm to help them find a new GM. We can worry about a coach one we have the GM locked up. Personally I would rather wait for the season to be over to get a coach because I would rather have a guy who whorked in the NFL as opposed to someone unemployed. The NFL is moving toward younger coaches many of these "experienced" coaches are unemployed for a reason. Lets not be behind the curve on this one; let's get a young firey guy in here. -MM
12/04/2009 10:25AM
Lynch
I would like to keep lynch. He kinda screwed himself with the 3 game sus. and never got going. But I like what he brings to the table. If we had a better line he would be better as would jackson.
12/04/2009 10:36AM
rotoworld.com
it's not as great of website as nhlnumbers.com, but you can look up individual players salaries on it. It's nice because it includes the bonus/guaranteed money. Schobel's not going anywhere next year - his entire salary next year is guaranteed money. There's no point to cut him.
12/04/2009 10:49AM
So Let's Review
In the past 3 drafts...we probably get about 3 serviceable players out of about, what, 21-23 players drafted?
Way to go Marv and NFL scouts! I swear, some fans would have been better at drafting than this front office. Or a Ouiji board.
12/04/2009 11:58AM
3-4
move schobel and maybin to outside linebacker. poz and someone else in the middle. stroud wants to be an end so hell play with kelsay and stick kyle willimas in the middle.
12/04/2009 12:07PM
Kelsey
Time to get rid of Kelsey as well and free up his salary b/c in no way is he performing like a #2 DE. Maybin will take his place next yr hopefully
12/04/2009 12:11PM
Posluszny
I have to disagree with some of the comments I've seen. Posluszny is only possibly usable as a two down back in a 3-4. Other than that, cut your losses
12/04/2009 1:03PM
Interior
We need 2 big athletic interior defensive lineman, Remember Big Ted, and Big Pat? They will stop the run.. And you plug and play the rest. Maybin needs to bulk up (remember Bruce his first year?)
12/04/2009 1:13PM
Shanahan Or Bust
If Shanahan is not the Bills head coach next season, JUST SELL IT RALPH and turn One Bills Drive into a giant amusement theme park with 10 rollercoasters for our thrills.
12/04/2009 1:44PM
Lay off Posluszny....
Until they can actually put some actual NFL caliber LBs with him. Im sorry but "hair" Mitchell and "I shouldnt even be on an NFL roster, let alone starting" Ellison just dont cut it. Its hard to make a difference as a LB when your the only one on the field.
12/04/2009 2:04PM
Re: Lay off Posluszny....
I don't like any of the other LB, but Posluszny is getting beaten consistently to the sidelines by RBs and can't cove most TEs.
12/04/2009 2:17PM
idk
the bills should move to toronto that way we dont have to worry about them or how bad they are anymore
12/04/2009 2:17PM
FrankK716
Big men. Get some quality big men and start by fixing our O-line. And get some people that actually play their position well not last years guard who is now being changed over to this years right tackle. That will give us a running game and better control of the clock to say nothing of an actual passing game.
12/04/2009 3:14PM
Our LBs
A LB, particulary OLB, should at least be a larger guy that can JAM the TE at the LoS. This is taught in High School. A Big MLB is nice for run Stop but he needs speed to go sideline to sideline. He should at all times be your leading tackler.
Poz is good, but he needs another man of good caliber so that he can either become the Weak Side LB or Co-MLB with another.
12/04/2009 3:47PM
Re: Interior.
"Remember Bruce his first year?"
Yeah... I do. He was FAT and out of shape. Not small and overrated like Maybin. I don't care how much Maybin works out, he will NEVER obtain the physical condition of Bruce. Plus... we don't have Rusty Jones. I believe the strenght & conditioning on this team is by thw Wii Fit game.
12/04/2009 3:49PM
re; Our LBs
If there is any hope for POZ to be a decent starter... he needs to be on the weak side (and drink milk so he doesn't break his arm every year)
I have hope for Poz. You have to remember he has missed significant time due to arm fractures. If he stays healthy, he just may improve.
12/04/2009 4:21PM
Where's #20
What about Dante Whitner?
12/04/2009 4:29PM
Why not sell
We should sell the team to L.A. and focus on hockey. The bills will never, ever again be a sucessful franchise in Buffalo. Period. Nobody wants to come here, nobody wants to stay here, and fewer and fewer people will be willing to pay to watch the C-list of quasi-athletes pretending to be NFL players.
12/04/2009 4:39PM
John Allaire
They need to fire him and hire a new strength and conditioning coach, then maybe we won't have so many injurys.
12/04/2009 5:18PM
lynch
why do u people like fred jackson. hes slow and overrated. tries to bull people over and ends up fumbling and only averages 2.4 yards per carry in toronto compared to lynch's 10.0 yards per carry(mind you lynch had 7 less carries and 29 more yards)face the facts fred is overrated
12/04/2009 6:55PM
Left Tackle
If you have an Oline that can run the ball and keep moving the chains..and score from time to time - you will be able to have your Defense on the field for 65 plays a game instead of 80. If you are ahead you have a better idea what the oposition is going to do (pass), and they become desperate and make mistakes (see Jarius Byrd). They have the makings of a decent interior line. I think Schouman was showing signs of becoming the comfort TE QB's like. It is hard to tell if Edwards is the answer or not because the Tackles (since Butler went down) have been awful. Face it, when your starting RT is out and your raw LT is hurt or out you are in trouble.
Think of it this way, the defense had us in the game (even with all the LB injuries for 60 plays per game. The problem was, the offense couldn't hold up their end of the deal because of OL. Edwards may very well be OK - I trust Bill Walsh's opinion. Give him some talent to keep him upright and things may change....quick.
12/04/2009 6:58PM
lynch is fine
lynch is a good rb. we just need a coaching staff that knows how to use him! like last night, "hey if its working why would we continue to do it"
12/04/2009 10:26PM
QB
Just give me Tim Tebow. I know this is unacceptable for a student at Ohio State 1/2 a year from graduating. Here is my thing, he has an attitude about him. He will get into the huddle and say get open, block and let's get a Touchdown. Thats what this team is in need of an attitude change. Is P Poz that bad?
12/04/2009 11:37PM
Re: lynch
come on man, you gotta be kidding! freddy j runs 10X as hard as lynch. Lynch dances WAY to much in the backfield and is always stopped behind the line. Jackson is a very patient runner and hits holes at the right time, he doesn't dance around for a yard or two. You gotta stick with Jackson, hes a good guy and an excellent runner. Lynch is too much of a liability off the field and his play isn't even that great.
12/04/2009 11:41PM
GET RID OF LYNCH?
ok, so the bills should get rid of the 23 year old rb who they drafted in the 1st round and has showed a lot of potential to be a top 10 in this league? and keep one who is going to be 29 year old at the start of next year... yeahhhhhh good luck with that, how many no.1 rbs do you know who are that old??? the guy made a mistake, give him a break, how is he bad for the locker room? do you hear him whining after losing his job or supporting jackson? plus, he goes out and gives a solid performance... they should keep both and keep lynch a chance of prove himself, the team should be built around him, evans and a young qb they draft next year
12/05/2009 12:29AM
Why the change on Lynch?
Nick, you used to love Marshawn Lynch! He is not even in his prime yet. His off the field stuff is not that bad. Plus we know you need two solid running backs in today's NFL. And Jackson is to easy to stop. Lynch can get more yards on his own than Jackson can. Hes a first round pick, trading him would be unwise!
12/05/2009 1:10AM
Lynch
There's a reason Fred Jackson was undrafted...he can't start 16 games, he's too small!! Beast Mode is are RB1 !!! All he's done is rush foe over 1000 yards in all his NFL season and had another 300 years recieving and a pro bowl!!!
KEEP LYNCH...HE'S ARE GUY !!!!!!
12/05/2009 1:31AM
The Draft
we won't have enough picks for all our needs. All this we need to get ___ in round ___. We need to be high on FAs
12/05/2009 1:45AM
Who Cares
We should just watch the games and that's it. 10 years of this talk, i'm sick of it.
12/05/2009 8:05AM
Florida opinion..
The Bills are an organization that is in a transition mode. Actually,
I feel that the team is right where it needs to be in order to accomplish a foundation for the future. First, a no nonsense old school GM!!! I think Paul Holmgren would serve as a solid choice. Next some player personal people who don't draft BIG 10 players until the 5-6th Round. I would move heaven and earth for the right to Draft Tim Tebow. Is he perfect?? No. Is he the perfect fit for the Bills franchise??? YES!! Smart, strong and wants to WIN!!! AT ALL COSTS. ( I am a Florida St. Fan) Tough words for me to write. Keep Lynch the offensive line must be PRIORITY 1 !! A good GM knows that. Maybin is a LINEBACKER. Only an idiot would consider him to be a DE. Whitner MUST GO!! Poz is a backup at best...Kelsay, McCargo Chambers McKinney ...Happy Trails. What the Bills need most of all is an identity. What type of mold will they be cast in? The GM will have a great deal to say about that. Ralphie can only pray he knows the difference between the two sides of the ball. Selling the team NOW would be optimum but his EGO will not allow for it. What a shame... It is that EGO that has destroyed this franchise. I will ALWAYS LOVE THE BILLS and No...they will not move to Toronto. One TO in their history is MORE than enough!!!!

Florence
Florance should remain as a starter at CB
12/05/2009 11:21AM
Tackles
When DB's lead two of the top three in tackles against the Jets, it means the front seven aren't getting the job done. WAY TOO SMALL. I'm not even sure this is a correct football observation but why do Bills linebackers play so close tothe line of scrimmage? They get caught up in "the wash" and are then unable to make plays .Forget a high-priced coach, hire the best strength/conditioning coach money can buy!!!!!!!!!!
12/05/2009 1:31PM
re: lynch
you conveniently mentioned only the Toronto game YPG for these two. look at every other game.

Who's Doing the Rebuilding?
Seriously, The same guys that have brought us this 7-9 team the last 9 years - are still here. So , what is going on folks? The team has been rebuilding since 1996. Just sell the team, it's too small a market in Buffalo. No coaches or players want to be in buffalo either, only guys that need a job and want a paycheck - like Kelsay and Schobel, oh yeah and T.O. needed money and work also.
12/06/2009 11:15AM
I agree
The Bills have been rebuilding for years. It all started 50 years ago. The only years the Bills werent rebuilding were from 1988-1994. This team has always been bad except for those 6 years. Buffalo is too small a city to compete in the NFL. Plus, Ralph Wilson has been and will continue to be the worst owner in NFL history. Wilson has a horrible reputation around the league. No good coaches or players want to come to play for Wilson and his Bills. The Bills will be the same next year and for every other year thereafter. The only real change will come when Wilson dies. Assuming the team relocates out of Buffalo (which seems like a 95% chance they will move) then change might happen. Pro sports and Buffalo just don't mix. If you dont beleive me then how do you explain 50 years of Bills and no superbowls and 35 years of Sabres and no Stanley Cup? That is 85 years of losing. That is a long long time. The only common thread behind that is Buffalo. Small market, small pay roll, cheap owners, equals bad results.
12/06/2009 11:16AM

"Never Be Another Winner Here"
That's funny, because the Saints and Colts are big market teams. Despite the parity in the league, there is still some cyclicality. The Bills and 49ers were great teams for a decade and now can't get off the mat. This too shall pass... unlessthey do away with revenue sharing.
12/06/2009 9:18PM
mendola
yeah keep ur starter as a guy who couldnt get it done this week and if hes so good and getting the majority of the carries then why does he only have two tds-both against miami last sunday hes a joke give it to marshawn and let him be the back
12/06/2009 9:48PM
Bill
It all comes down to Ralph. Since our superbowl run ended we've been through GMs, coaches, QB's, etc. All have been losers. All have been hired by the head loser. Sh!t flows downhill. So does bad decision making.
12/06/2009 10:26PM
swiss cheese
bills have more holes than a pound of swiss cheese nick it will take forever i'm just going to shut up and take all the bills crap
12/06/2009 11:20PM
What are you smoking?
Buffalo is not a "big market team." You can't comepare Indy or San Fran to Buffalo my joke of a friend. Plus, what are you talking about when you say "the Bills were great for a decade?" You do know that a decade is 10 years right? So let me see, the Bills were really only a contender to go deep in the playoffs from 1989-1994. That is only 6 years. What other 4 years are you talking about? I can't imagine you think the Wade Phillips years were a good Bills team. If you do then you need to stop talking about football cause you have no credibility. So because the Bills have 6 good years out of 50 you somehow think the Bills will be good again? You know even a broken clock is correct 2 times a day. You will have to wait another 50 years before the Bills will be a playoff team again. But we all know by then they will have left Buffalo just like most of the remaining residnets.
12/07/2009 3:23AM
good start
pretty good run down...for me it will be what we do in april,3 players must be on who ever will be making the choices at that point, you either need to get tony pike or colt mccoy,or big suoe out of nebraska(no way am i spelling his first name)
12/07/2009 10:36AM
Sell The Team
All you idiots who have given up ont the bills already are losers. Try imagining that you are the owner of an NFL team and your team sucks. Rebuilding doesn't happen overnight and giving up on your team this early is a joke. Russ and Ralph will make the right decisions so dont worry about it.Go Bills
12/07/2009 11:41AM
T.O.
there is little doubt that T.O. won't be a Bill next year. Look for him to be a likely Baltimore Raven next year since it didn't happen this year at the trade deadline.
12/08/2009 6:24AM
3-4 Defense
If the Bills are going to consider the switch they need a big run stopper for the NT slot, they do not have one on this roster
12/08/2009 10:02PM
More Lynch & Venting
Does anyone remember the Bills site and Lynch himself touting how the 20 extra pounds he added would help him!!?? I wonder if he could look like the rookie back if he was back around 215 and not trying to run through everyone and into his blockers (term used loosely).
The post concerning the stength and conditioning coach I believe is right on.
Finally, have you noticed that a team that is truly undisciplined and poorly coached like the Bills have the continuation of injuries. They play as individuals with no plan. Eric Wood's injury is certaily an exception.
How many records would the Bills own now if Mr. Polian were still in Buffalo?
