Did Super Sunday Say Anything About Bills?

nick@wgr550.com

I don't want to belabor this point in the incestual world that is the National Football League, but one of my favorite Bills snagged a Super Bowl ring on Sunday, and it wasn't for Buffalo.

Jabari Greer, he of the quirky Bills locker room skits and undrafted starter fame, is a Super Bowl champ. So are Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and two of his players, Anthony Hargrove and Pierson Prioleau.

They are the first former Bills to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy since Larry Centers of the Patriots in 2003. There have been others -- Rob Johnson (Tampa Bay) and Mike Lodish (Denver) among them -- but those were back when Bills fans felt they were just a few moves away from a title, so briefly removed from playoff wins.

Honestly, when my boss called me Monday morning and asked if I had any postable opinions on Gregg Williams winning a Super Bowl, I felt uninspired in terms of writing. Yeah, I don't really like the guy, and I'm bummed that he won. Plus, I was rooting for the Colts on account of UB alumni Drew Willy and Jamey Richard.

But truth be told, former Bills winning doesn't faze me. Maybe I'm already in hockey mode after the underwhelming "Quest For a Coach" and more underwhelming Sabres weekend, but when I see Williams, I don't think "former Bill" and I certainly don't seethe with hate. I don't like the guy, no, but he's just another guy who has a ring.

When it comes to Greer, I'm very happy for him. He was a rags to riches guy who told us midway through last season that the Bills hadn't even approached him about sticking around. That was pretty rough to hear, but maybe there's a silver lining here.

There's a new coaching staff and some new front office folks in town. Sure, they don't look like much and the odds say they're bigger castaways than "Lost," but beneath it all maybe they'll be able to recognize and work with the talent they had.

I'm certainly one of those "quarterback first" guys, but how much better would the Bills have been if they had picked Haloti Ngata and played him alongside former Bills defensive tackle Justin Bannan, allowed to leave. What about Jim Leonhard, who started for the Jets in the AFC title game with a broken hand? Mike Gandy started a Super Bowl at tackle for the Arizona Cardinals last year, while Sam Aiken has been catching passes from Tom Brady this year.

Bannan, Leonhard, Gandy and Aiken aren't household names, nor are they stars. They aren't players you were shocked to see leave Buffalo and, with the exception of Leonhard, they underperformed as Bills. But it makes you wonder exactly how bad things have been here in terms of finding and developing NFL players, not even in free agency, but on your very own practice field.

There's a bunch of new faces in charge now. New defensive coordinator George Edwards could be eyeing up someone in the draft, but he also could've seen a number of players in the NFL and thought, "Those guys could work better under my tutelage." Same for every other coach on staff. It's not much to go on, but it's better than nothing.

under achieving coaching staff
Its interesting that the Bills castaways have had success with other teams. It just shows to me what an under-achieving coaching staff we had over the past four years. If you remember, Fred Jackson had a fantastic training camp his first year and it was not til mid-season that he saw playing time. The most amazing thing that has happened recently is that Perry Fewell was hired as a D.C.. With all the under-achievers on defense (Mitchell and Poz), and the under-developed talen (Leanard and Greer) that Fewell could find further employment. There must be a complete lack of imagination or talent at the D.C position for this guy to get a job. It just doesn't make any sense.

No is my answer
I'm ready for the rigs to pull into One Bills Drive to end this nightmare.

Sam Aiken
He would always catch a bunch of passes in the preseason and then the Bills would banish him to special teams for the regular season. Now, he is catching key passes from Tom Brady when we've needed a physically big receiver forever!!!! Jabari Greeris the second biggest free agent mistake this team has made in the last 10 years. The biggest being Pat Williams.
02/08/2010 9:16AM
Understanding?
Regarding Perry..It's the will to win and the ability to play for somebody and get the job done done.In Perry's case he is a team person and playing Afterall he showed "life" as a head coach not a deadpan. Last night Greg Williams mentioned how he wanted to draft Drew Brees when he was here but was unable to do so
02/08/2010 9:17AM
Make that third biggest!
I forgot about and would place Antoine Winfield as the second biggest free agent mistake. Then, Greer.

Get it rght!
What`s wrong with the Billsis not who they let go,but what they did with all the first and second round draft choices in the last 10 years. You look at at winning teams and there early draft picks are still playing and playing well. How many first or second round guy`s did the Bills pass on to reach out for hopefulls. You gave away pic`s for Rob Johnson, Bledso, Mike Williams, Megahee. Then draft players like Mayben and Ellis and don`t play them. Even Stevie Johnson for the past 2 preseason`s has been the best wide reciever and when the season starts is inactive. Lokk how long it took to play Greer when he was here, because he was not drafted high. They are so stubborn to prove they what they are doing, they don`t play the guy`s that deserve it.

Yes, only hope is post Wilson
Well in one clubhouse you have one of the best football architects in the history of the game that ran the wrath on the cantankerous Bills owner and on the other sideline you have a solid well payed top of his game hired coordinator as head coach and an arrogant well paid top of his game defensive coordinator who also fell out of Wilsons organization. These are two combinations present day success that are impossible under the current Bills owner and staff of yes men.

Yes move to a different city
Sure this gane said something to Bills fans. If you want a serious run at an NFL championship then move to a city with an owner who is committed to investing and developing a championship team. As for now you guys are stuck in parking lot tailgate mud rooting for 3rd rate player talent and lower tier coaches when the game is operating at two to three levels above this owners comprehenshion.
02/08/2010 10:10AM
Former Bills...
Well really, there were a lot of former Bills making plays this offseason. Yeah, you had Greer and Hargrove making plays for the Saints, and Leonard for the Jets, but don't forget Pat Williams and Antoine Winfield, cornerstones of the Vikings defense- those were possibly the biggest free agents to leave town. Also keep in mind Jason Peters helping the Eagles get to the playoffs.
02/08/2010 10:18AM
Ralph Wilson should be ashamed...
he is the worst owner in pro sports today. Shame on that old evil penny pinching codger. Give bnack your hall of fame yellow jacket. You don't desrve it you old fool! Chan Gailey and Buddy Nix are a joke! I hope the stadium in filled with crickets next year and not people. You won't be getting one dime from me anymore you old LOSER!
02/08/2010 10:41AM
mistakes
I wonder where we would be as a team if we kept Winfield, Leonhard & Greer? What players could we have drafted instead of players like McKelvin & Whitner to "replace" our departed FA mistakes? Just a nightmare 10 years. I just wonder if we have hit bottom yet.
02/08/2010 10:46AM
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been saying this since last year...why has no one in the media mentioned this til now? Modrak not as bad as people make him out be...you need to look at the coaching.
02/08/2010 11:04AM
Makes sense to me
Good things happen when you leave Buffalo, that goes for just about anything, jobs, weather, life in general.
02/08/2010 11:06AM
Stadium
During the Super Bowl, did anyone happen to take notice of the "new" name of the "dreaded" Miami Dolphin's stadium? "Sun Life" is one of Canada's largest insurance companies(headquarters in Toronto) that, in January, signed a five year deal for the naming rights to the stadium. I thought the games in Toronto were being played to attract more corporate money to help keep the team in Buffalo? Yeah right!
02/08/2010 11:58AM
Don't Forget
Superbowl Champ Kevin Gilbride.
02/08/2010 11:59AM
Eage
Hard not to be happy for Greer, just wish it woulda Been him who picked 6'ed peyton manning to win a super bowl
02/08/2010 12:15PM
Just Pondering
What if Wilson went off the deep end here and hired Charlie Caserly as GM na he hired Bill Cower. What would the front office look like and the coaching staff hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??????????????????

Re: Stadium
10-4 We got a convoy here waiting to get in at One Bills Drive. Breaker, breaker 1-9!
02/08/2010 12:52PM
Bills wasted last decade instead of building
If the Bills actually built on what was here they may have been able to stockpile talent. The Saints were able to stockpile a boatload of draftpicks and were brilliant in free agency and trades. It shows what can happen when you build on existing strengths. The Bills floundered and bumbled instead of building a solid foundation. This win by the Saints magnifies the Bills incompetence. No wonder every year of the past decade seems like rebuilding!
02/08/2010 1:45PM
We could afford to let Greer leave
I'm glad for him. It sucks that we never appraoched him, btu we had no reason to. Of course, I would've rather just not drafted McKelvin and kept him, but McGe, Florence, and Leodis have to make you comfortable at CB.
02/08/2010 2:03PM
It says something, don't watch
It says something to Bills fans, turn off the TV next season unless you want more pain. All you will see if you watch in 2010 is more of the same from past years. The management must think the fans will get behind anyone they bring here, and they are probably right, but I am not watching this stuff anymore. They keep replacing second rate with more second rate, last 10 years, players, coaches, front office. What a joke. Of course, second rate is all they can do now, nobody of any calibur will come up this far north to deal with a dead city and economy, poor management, lousy weather, and the bad rap that goes with even living here. Buffalo, home of the 4 time in a row Super Bowl losers. The Bills can only manage one decent player or coach at a time now, and one or two persons cannot turn around a team.
02/08/2010 2:20PM
makes me wonder
IN 2008 The Saints finished 8-8 and the Bills finished 7-9 the Saints added jabari and Hargrove from our roster and of course Darren Sharper. the Bills added T.O for the same money. 2009 Saints 16-3 superbowel champs. bills 6-10 super-implodeing champs!!!!!!
02/08/2010 2:29PM
BREES A BILL ???
GREG WILLIAMS said he wanted BREES when he was in BUFFALO but was over-ruled ! but went to NO SAINTS and the rest is history! he was asked what he felt about drew after the SUPERBOWL ! WOW WHAT A ANASWER !
02/08/2010 3:15PM
Those who left better than those who stayed
I'm tired of seeing former Bills helping other teams reach the playoffs. To your list, you should also add Bill Polian, Colts President; Frank Reich, Colts QB coach; AJ Smith, GM, Chargers, Willis McGahee, Ravens; Wade Philips, Ccach, Cowboys. The list goes on. It seems that a ticket out of Buffalo is the best thing that can happen to a professional football player or coach. The worst thing is staying! How do we turn this around? Nix and Gailey--Good luck!
02/08/2010 3:17PM
Jabari
Watching him again just sickens me to think that we let him, Antoine, and Big Patty leave to go star elsewhere while we signed guys like Kelsay and McGee to stay. Next to the Lions, the most dysfunctional franchise in football.
02/08/2010 4:13PM
the Buffalo Jinx
what else could it be? the black cloud continues to cover the city. ahhhh!!!!!
02/08/2010 5:06PM
3-4 defense
anyone else thinking that the 3-4 defense is just going to be this years version of the no huddle offense? Just another gimmick, when it comes to the Bills I'll believe it when I see it. I'll probably watch 4-6 games at the beginning of the season. Then when they go 2-4 or 1-3 I'll have had my fill of the Bills...
02/08/2010 10:13PM
Funny thing about Gregg
Even without the QB he wanted, he still loved the pass. 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out... yup, he really wanted a QB...
02/09/2010 1:48PM
YES
It says how much a team needs a STAR QB in this league.
02/09/2010 6:41PM
doo-doo
it says the bills are doo-doo. ralph is doo-doo.
