(WGR 550) -- If you want to see a light at the end of the tunnel, check in with ESPN's Todd McShay, who gave an incredibly interesting interview on The Howard Simon Show late in Friday's show.
McShay said he'd wait to draft a quarterback if he were the Bills and use the early picks to bolster both lines. He also talked about new Bills quarterback Brian Brohm, current Bills defensive end Aaron Maybin and other topics.
On Brohm:
"I like Brian, not as a first-round quarterback," McShay said (Green Bay selected Brohm No. 56 overall in 2008). "I had him in the late second, early third round range, and I thought that he was not far before Michigan's Chad Henne. With Brian Brohm, sometimes it's just about the situation you're in and finding the right fit. He loves the game, I know that. He's got some mechanical issues in terms of getting the ball out, and he's not the best athlete, so you're going to have to protect him. He has enough potential to contribute."
On who will be the best QB out of the 2010 Draft:
"I think it's Jake Locker, from Washington. He has the combination of the physical tools, the competitiveness and the mental toughness to play in the NFL," McShay said while mentioning injury concerns.
When quizzed on how his description of Locker matched the descriptions of J.P. Losman or Trent Edwards, McShay had a hard and fast rebuttal.
"There's a world of difference in talent. Trent Edwards is a solid player if protected and all those things. (Edwards and Losman) aren't even close to Jake Locker... he's just not as refined as you'd like to see in a quarterback you're going to draft in the first 10 picks."
On why he would wait to select a franchise QB if he were the Bills:
"I'm a believer that you have to put the guys around him. Everything has to be in place to get a young quarterback to come in and succeed. I would take another offensive lineman high in the draft. I would continue to build that defense."
McShay said a better move would be picking Russell Okung, the offensive lineman from Oklahoma whom McShay considers the best in the draft. He said Notre Dame's Jimmy Claussen could drop to the second round, and that he feels Oklahoma's Sam Bradford could slip to the late first, where BUffalo could trade off.
McShay likes the idea of not taking a franchise quarterback until the 2011 draft, when guys like Stanford's Andrew Luck or Arkansas' Ryan Mallett could be there for the taking.
On Aaron Maybin:
"I loved him (coming out of the draft). The one thing always was he's not ready to play right away. So long as he doesn't lose his confidence, I still think he's a double-digit sack guy in the league."
McShay said he has been wrong before, but believe in Maybin. The entire interview will be available in our Audio Vault.
