Schopp: Here's your Week 18

So the NFL is hoping to go to 18 games. We just don't know when yet. Or how.

Let's concern ourselves with the "how" for the moment. Will it be two more conference games? Games against regional or traditional rivals, like baseball does in interleague play? Will it be weighted, so that good teams will play other good teams?

Schopp: Is Toronto snubbing NFL?

Tonight the Bills' and Colts' backups play a neutral-site practice game on a concrete rug in a baseball stadium, outside of the United States. Tickets are very expensive, and there may be some empty seats. Amazing that could happen, isn't it?

Would it be right to think that a tepid, sparse crowd is an indication that Toronto just doesn't want the NFL? Not to me.

Schopp: New Bills bosses good so far

To fans, Chan Gailey might as well have been Jan Brady when the Bills made him their head coach, given how many miles he was in stature from the Rushmore-esque names of Cowher, Gruden and Shanahan that were swimming in the coaching pool. Gailey might have been an excellent choice to be an NFL offensive coordinator, but head coach? Come on.

There are reasons for that.

Schopp: Good for Gary Bettman

By rejecting Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the Devils on Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman did something very unusual. When it came to inflicting discipline on a team, he surprised everyone and actually did his job.

No one argues that Kovalchuk's deal wasn't meant to toy with the salary cap. The contract is a slap in the face to the CBA.

Schopp: Good luck, Cleveland

It's July 1, the new biggest day of the year in sports business. And there's no bigger question in the realm today than whether LeBron James will leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for, if not greener pastures, certainly a bigger farm.

I hope he doesn't.

I don't always root for small-market teams, or teams with championship droughts. Cleveland, of course, is both.

Schopp: Sharks next to see the light

Looks to me like the San Jose Sharks are the latest NHL team to figure out that having an elite goaltender in this era of hockey is not that different to your bottom line than have a weak one.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson announced this week that his team will not re-sign Evgeni Nabokov, consistently one of the league's top goaltenders since the lockout.

Schopp: Soccer wasn't boring today

Can we somehow get Russell Crowe's Marcus Aurelius to stand up and exclaim to soccer haters everywhere, "Were you not entertained???!!!"

People say a lot of things about soccer. Too low-scoring. Too many ties. Too much diving. Too little action. We've heard it all for years.

Tough to put down soccer today, I think.

Schopp: Three swings at So-Cal baseball

Since lots of people are around to write about a good Stanley Cup Final that I missed most of, and Greg Bauch is here to tell you about The Bachelorette, I'll slip in a writeup of my recent experiences at the three Major League Baseball stadiums in Southern California. Anaheim, San Diego and Los Angeles. Each is quite different from the other two.

Schopp: Finals to be broadcast in color

I don't know whether to give the Flyers and Blackhawks credit for their uniforms, or blame.

Yes, these teams sport two of the sharpest-looking jerseys in sports. Chicago's red and Philadelphia's orange jerseys are bright, distinctive, and to my eyes gorgeous. They're on my Top 5 list with Toronto's blue, Montreal's red and Edmonton's blue-and-orange sweaters.

Schopp: Stop and smell the Scully

I had the kind of thought last night that I wish I had more often.

When I have some time with my TV, one of the first channels I'll turn to is DirecTV channel 720-1, which has the MLB Game Mix. Eight baseball games in little boxes, with the score above each box. (If I'm in an especially diabolical mood, I'll hit the guide button here.)

Schopp: Strap in for LeBron-a-thon

I have friends who get upset at ESPN because of all the attention LeBron James gets. After all, he is only one team. I mean, player.

If you're in that club, you may want to steer away from ESPN for the next two months. They might as well put a catchy name on the 'round-the-clock coverage on what team James will sign with -- like "LeBron-A-Thon".

Schopp: The unspoken secret to winning hockey

The Sabres' season has been over for more than a week now. For the third year in a row, at least most of the playoffs will play out without them. Many fans are bummed out.

There is a bright side, as always. One thing about the Sabres I don't miss is all the players' talking about what the team needs to better and what it takes to win.

Sure, some of their usual points have merit.

Schopp: Sabres fail to Capitalize

Surely Washington's shocking first-round loss to Montreal has some Sabres fans feeling better about their team's loss to Boston. The logic being that this year reminds us how anything can happen in the playoffs, and Buffalo's going out in six games to the Bruins pales in comparison to the Capitals' loss.

I disagree though.

SCHOPP: Cynics, take the next few weeks off

Remind yourself of this once in a while during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, long may they last in Buffalo, in between watching the celebrity millionaires on the ice blocking slapshots, starting fights, taking punches and sticks to the mouth in scrums around the net, and so on: They've already received their full salaries.

Schopp: Tiger swings, world exhales

I'm taking a short break from pondering whether anyone goes to sex addiction therapy for having an addiction to sex with their spouse.

I see that Tiger Woods is playing in a golf tournament today. About half his round or so might even be televised, which is great because it's hard to find live sports on TV these days. Thank you, Masters. Can I get you something to drink?
