Sabres GM Tim Murray met the media prior to Tuesday's home matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. While much of the conversation was focused on the upcoming trade deadline, Murray also provided a glimpse into Ted Nolan's current status.
"We are discussing it and we have discussed it, so we're along that path, yes," said Murray when asked about a contract extension for Nolan.
Regarding Miller, the Buffalo general manager mentioned that there has been interest from "more than two teams, less than 10 teams" and also acknowledged that a trade could be beneficial for both parties.
"Players that treat you right, you try to do what's best for them too, as long as it fits into what you're doing" Murray said. "By trading Ryan to a contender, a good team that maybe is lacking only his position, I think that we've certainly not done a disservice to him and we've helped the organization in our own right."
"Our goal right now, I think on both sides, is to pursue a proper trade," he added.
"It's realistic, but it's not the route we're looking at right now," Murray noted. "The route we're looking at is to get value for [Miller], to put him in a position to succeed."
Murray had some thoughts on whether the goaltender wants to stick around for a rebuild. "I know what I think [Miller's] first choice would be, and I don't think signing here is his first choice at his age and where we're at," he said. "But I wouldn't say he's got no interest."
If the Sabres were to deal Miller before next week's deadline, it remains to be seen what kind of package could be sent Buffalo's way. "Ideally, in a perfect world, if teams would give me two real good young players that are two years or so into their development, that would be outstanding," said Murray. "But I don't think teams are going to bend over backwards to make life easier for us. It's going to be the determination made, what the best deal is offered, and if it's draft picks -- it's draft picks. And then we'll turn them into assets and players."
Murray also briefly spoke about his current captain and what the future may hold for Steve Ott.
"Steve Ott is the type of player I've looked for, for 21 years," he said. "The type of person and the type of player, the way he plays the game, the way he conducts himself, that's not the type of player that I want to trade away. That's the type of player I want to bring in. Unfortunately, when I got here, he's at his age and he's an unrestricted free agent, so he has every right to pursue other opportunities."
....thank God. It's refreshing to hear our GM be upfront and honest with his comments. With Darcy it was always a dance, always with a "you can't handle the truth" mentality and that he was always so much smarter than the fan base. This guy may or may not restore the roar in Buffalo but at least it's a fresh perspective....and that's good enough right now after so many years of drivel from the GMs chair. Good luck this next week, Tim.
Has anyone noticed that this guy is sounding more like Regier every day?
No, not in his actual voice, but his words and actions sure are. "Value" for a player? No kidding? No, Tim; we all expect you to just bend over and take it. Why not come right out and say things plainly: If a deal is there we'll jump on it? Why all the double-speak? I'm supposed to be happy when Miller stays here because the Sabres couldn't get what "they" thought he was worth? Didn't we just leave that party? C'mon somebody shock me and move Stafford, Ennis AND Pysyk and get a first and two seconds next year and a decent goalie. Give me something fun other than Moulson for a first.
Murray Needs New Glasses
Hey Tim Murray, the 70's called and they want their glasses back.
Re: Has anyone noticed that this guy is sounding more like Regier every day?
Every GM in the league uses those terms. Also, if they don't get appropriate value (determined by them), they don't trade him, shouldn't trade him. He knows this because he's a GM and you don't because you're just a fan.
re. Murray Needs New Glasses
That's the style knucklehead....and I'm sure they cost more than you make in 2 months. Just saying
re: to so un-darcey like....
I agree with you, darcy was all ways side steppin the questions. If he were still here they would be even more bad than they are now. Now tim is a Gm thats going to tell you from start about sabres future. This man knows what this team need so let him do his job. People are mad because it's not happening fast enough. well thats is a good thing. Why rush to bring in anybody to get the same results. when we know that their are not going anywhere anyway. Just keep up moving forward tim; because all these problems you got know. You want have when the new season starts. And that fine with me.
Re: Murray Needs New Glasses
Those glasses are scary. They are very Regier like. I can only hope that he don't re sign Nolan. Watching that game last night was pathetic even if the Sabres won the game. Very Latvian like.
Comments are too funny
So.... commentary #1 says Murray is "refreshing" and un-Darcy like. Commentary #2 thinks "this guy is sounding more like Regier every day."
If I were Murray I would see this as proof that Sabres fans will never be satisfied....until the Cup is dancing down Main St.
I love the comment on Murray needing new glasses! I think the glasses make him look like the cartoon character Dexter from the cartoon Dexter's Laboratory.
Others Need To Go Also
Someone please take Stafford and Leino..... if they are here next year I am done with this team.
Keep discussing. All talk...no ACTION!!!
