Oilers Slip Past Sabres 3-2

Matt Hendricks' shorthanded goal early in the third period turned out to be the winner for the Edmonton Oilers in a 3-2 victory over the Sabres at First Niagara Center on Monday. Buffalo racked up a season-high 44 shots in the loss.

The Oilers struck only 32 seconds into the game on Jeff Petry's fourth of the season. With Mike Weber caught deep, Petry -- also a defenseman -- jumped up on the rush, danced around Jamie McBain, and slipped a backhand past Jhonas Enroth's right pad for the 1-0 Edmonton lead.

Steve Ott tied it later in the period with a power play goal. Tyler Myers had a clean shot on Ilya Bryzgalov and Ott's rebound chance barely trickled over the goalline before Petry swept it out. The Buffalo captain nearly had another moments later, but cranked a shot off the crossbar. The Sabres' special teams contributed again at 19:04 of the first when Drew Stafford sent a shorthanded rocket over Bryzgalov's glove, putting Buffalo ahead 2-1.

Edmonton's Justin Schultz tied it at 16:45 of the second period, wristing the puck over Enroth's right shoulder from the near faceoff circle. Hendricks put the Oilers up 3-2 with a shorthanded goal in the first minute of the third period. With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the box for hooking, Hendricks got behind coverage and beat Enroth on a clean-cut breakaway for the one-goal lead.

McBain had a chance to tie it once again for Buffalo, but sent a shot off the near post with less than 13 minutes to play. The Sabres appeared to tie it once again later in the period following a scrum in front of the net, but the referee ruled that he was in the process of blowing the whistle before the puck slid over the line. Bryzgalov stopped all 13 Buffalo shots in the final period, including 42 overall, and Edmonton hung on for the win. Enroth came up with 25 saves in the loss, dropping his record to 1-11-5.

The Sabres stay home for a Wednesday night matchup against the top team in the Eastern Conference, Pittsburgh. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m. on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
