Possible Bills Targets: S Jim Leonhard

(WGR 550) -- With George Wilson jettisoned from the roster and only Jairus Byrd, Da'Norris Searcy and Mana Silva remaining, the Buffalo Bills are in need of a veteran safety this off-season.

While the last coaching staff thought very highly of Searcy, the former fourth-round pick, there's no telling what Doug Marrone and Mike Pettine will do with the starting strong safety job just yet.

Of the safeties, the one certainty (kind of), is that Jairus Byrd will be back. By slapping the franchise tag on him, the Bills will conceivably have him for 2013 at least. Past him, there are a lot of questions.

Perhaps the Bills will look to an old friend from long ago to factor in to the team's starting lineup. That man could be Jim Leonhard.

Let's take a look at both the case for, and against the Bills signing Leonhard.

The Case For Jim Leonhard

From the way we've seen both the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets operate over the time that Mike Pettine was a part of them, the defensive backs played a very important role. After finding his way in to the starting lineup in 2008 with Baltimore, Jim Leonhard was part of the Baltimore brigade that left the Ravens for the greener pastures of New Jersey.

Leonhard knew the defense. He knew the terminology. Most importantly, he knew the defensive coaching staff. These are three very important factors, and ones that the Bills might finding themselves looking at when the free agency period opens up on Tuesday.

Leonhard spent four seasons with Mike Pettine, starting all of them. If they do like Searcy as much as the last coaching staff did, a player like Leonhard could be the type of player to start while the former learns all the different nuances of the defense.

Adding to it all is both Leonhard's familiarity with the Bills, having spent his first three seasons in Buffalo, as well as an expected salary that's much lower than some of the top-tier free agents at the position.

Leonhard and Buffalo could be a solid fit.

The Case Against Jim Leonhard

At the age of 30, Leonhard could present some problems if the team needs him to start every single game.

Suffering a similar injury to former Bills cornerback Terrence McGee, Leonhard suffered a torn patellar tendon in 2011. It kept him away from signing with a team until the first week of August, when he proved he could still move on the injury.

Spending last season with Denver, Leonhard appeared in all 16 games with the Broncos. Although he started one game during 2012, Leonhard managed only 18 tackles. He did return 15 punts on the season, however, averaging over three yards lower than his career average.

With his injury the explosion could be gone and he could be a liability on the field, even if his mind is perfect for what Mike Pettine wants to do on defense. It would be a risk to put him on the field in critical situations, and one that could cost them if he's not able to regain his old form.

Will They or Won't They?

Despite the concerns over injury, Jim Leonhard is someone that Pettine knows very well. Having that sort of knowledge in a secondary that will all be learning on the job is something the Bills prefer when free agency gets here. With the amount of spots the Bills need to address this off-season, Leonhard's expected salary would likely be a fit for what they're trying to do this season. I would expect the Bills to look at Leonhard when free agency opens up.

03/08/2013 6:39PM
You're crazy
You are starting to sound like Nix looking into on the cheap losing football players. Let's talk about the big stuff. (top shelf) I wanna be like New England and the teams that know winning football. WGR loves to shill mediocrity and train wrecks.

Bulldog
figured show would be tolerable with Schopp out for week. What was I thinking. Logic would dictate one terrible host better than two. But some how they manage to make show less horrible when there together.

No d m way
stop going after second tier injured washed up players!!!!!! be a player in free agency or buffalo will just keep rebuilding and chasing the other teams!!! let's not be a dumping ground for players that can't play anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adrian Wilson??????
The Cards just released him today, he would be a better option than Leonard, bigger physically and a BIG Hitter...He could/would fill the bill for the Bills and bring in that veteran leadership to the D

Adrian Wilson... YESSS!!! NOW!!!
I've LOVED this guy since he Asassinated Trent "That Girl" Edwards!! Maybe he can "moonlite" at Walmart too! He'd be the BIGGEST HITTER in Buffalo in 20 YEARS!!! And Tom Brady wouldn't smile so much!! DO IT!!!

Were's smarter than the 3 stooges at 1 Bills Drive
Please show the readers some respect. This is even worse than yesterday's promotion of mediocrity! 18 tackles last season and a 3 yard punt return average. Yeah, that's just the Bills need. Abe Simpson is writing these stories.

Draft
I think the bills should draft DJ Swearinger from South Carolina. With Him Byrd and Gilmore the defensive backfield looks pretty bright.

Hating the Haters.....
What is with some of you people ? The guy is giving us a perspective on players pro and con. It's no different than the "gurus" on ESPN or the NFL network. How often do they hit the mark on their player assessments ? Yeah it's one guys opinion, but it is an informed opinion. This reporter puts in the time and effort. I believe he attended the combine. He is more than an armchair QB like Simon, White, Schopp and the "Bulldog". Those are the guys who are laughable with how they purport themselves as knowledgeable. They deserve the ridicule with their sophmoric columns. Keep up the work Joe. Signed, not Joe's dad or mom.

Hmmmmm
I'm starting to wonder if WGR enjoys mediocrity and ticking the fans off. I would think that the season ticket holders and the people who support our sports franchises would know more about our teams than this station. I really believe seriously that the clown shows, these blog write ups, and beat reporters on this station just love to pi$$ people off. Come on now, the fans know what's good and what sucks. It's about time all you clowns get on the same page as the fans and work with them instead of being a bunch of stubborn idiots shilling the putridness we all have been seeing for a long time now. Get with the program!

Try it for one season......
veteran leadership is truly needed on this team. Leonhard knows what Mike Pettine wants. He could help convey it to the younger players. It won't hurt to try it for one year. The Bills have made far dumber moves over their history.

Re: Hating the Haters
Joe does do a good job, but when is the talk of mediocrity going to come to an end here?
03/09/2013 7:12PM
i don't care
this guy is not worth an entire article. it's a blip on the radar. why even waste all this space when you should be talking about a real target like laron landry?

Leonhard to good for the Bills
He is a great saftey, he is getting older but could still get the job done.

When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
