Team Canada proved to be resilient again in Sochi, coming back from a 2-0 deficit Thursday to defeat the United States 3-2 in overtime in the Women’s Ice Hockey Gold Medal Game.
USA and Canada showed their disdain for each other right from the get-go, as the first period saw 5 penalties between both teams, including a body check (illegal in Women’s Hockey) from Canada’s Tara Watchorn. The U.S. outshot Canada 11-9 heading into the second period.
No major scoring chances to start the second, shots still stayed pretty much even heading to the midway point of the period. With about 8 minutes left, the United States struck first with Team Captain Meghan Duggan notching her first goal of the tournament right off of a faceoff in the Canadian zone. Shortly after the goal, Canada did all they could on consecutive power plays (they even had a 5 on 3 for about 30 seconds), but team USA was able to neutralize the Canadian advantage to keep their lead heading into the final frame.
The U.S. had a power play right away at the start of the period after a tripping call against Canada, and they were able to capitalize on it. With 17:59 left, Hilary Knight pushed a shot into the crease and Alex Carpenter was able to put it away for the Americans, and it ended up being a much-needed goal.
With 3:26 left in regulation, Canada cut the lead in half as Brianne Jenner was able to bounce a puck in on American goaltender Jessie Vetter, providing tense final moments in regulation. With an empty net, the U.S. put a puck all the way down the ice with under 90 seconds left that ended up hitting the post, which would have likely sealed the game, but Canada was able to head back down the ice and tie it by way of Marie-Philip Poulin, sending the game to overtime tied at 2.
In 4 on 4 action, The US had a great opportunity in the Canadian zone with 12 and a half minutes left, but they turned the puck over and the aforementioned knight got called for a cross check, giving Canada the power play. Swarming in the American zone with the player advantage, Poulin notched her second goal of the game, giving Canada another come from behind victory, and USA has to settle for silver.
The U.S. Men’s team plays their Semifinal matchup against the Canadians Friday at noon, We'll have the game for you right here on WGR.

The U.S coach lost that game..
Next time get a former coach who has won a Stanley Cup or who has at least played in big game situations and won ..You can't have your team sit back that deep with a lead..you have to stay aggressive. The defense started sitting back way too close to the net .
I feel bad for those girls being up by 2 with less than 2 minutes left.
You have to give Canada credit for gutting it out twice..when the U.S were clearly the better, faster team.
Said it best "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME". The US played not to lose and look at the result.
My apologizes..for the time mistake on the above comment… Up by 2 with less than 4 minutes remain :D
Sabres Fan In Kingston
Awesome! Four Olympic Gold Medals in a row for Canada's womens hockey program. Watching that games makes me feel great as a North American and of course, proud to be Canadian.
Ahead by 2 goals with 6 minutes left. Pretty awful!
You Got to Be Kidding Me
The game reminded me of a Sabres coached game. Up 2-0, then blow it sitting back. Disappointed that they didn't get the Gold. Coaches though will never get it that going conservative in any sport with a lead...the chances of losing become greater. Why they coach like that is a complete Joke.
I hope they didn`t celebrate their gold medal like they did in 2010 by smoking cigars and drinking beer on the ice. They were disgraceful!!! They set a terrible example for all the kids watching them.
The US women should keep their heads up. They played a gutsy game, but just couldn't hang on...heartbreaking loss, something we know plenty about here in Buffalo. Keep your heads up ladies, that was a hell of an effort, you'll get 'em next time!
Great to watch
Entertaining game. More passing and chances then the men's game. Checking should be allowed. USA seemed the better team with more speed and skill. Canada hung in there strong. Big ice and 4 on 4 wore both teams out.
Canadian Teams Always Get That Power Play To Decide Outcomes At The Right Time
Just knew that was coming like its written in the rules somewhere. Pathetic. Case closed.
congrats ladies for the silver.
I wish they would put their head down. Ladies you played one hell of a game. and congrats to the canada ladies for the gold. US ladies if it wasn't for you lovely ladies. I would of never started watching women hockey. but when i saw that these womens are for real. i started watching all the time. then i started to see canada ladies and the other womens from other countries. well i am not going to lie. i said to myself where can i find one of these womens. so i can merry one of them. We know it hard to finish in second. but your turn will come. Its a shame they got to wait 4 years to do this again. I mean hey league we got women basketball, women baseball, its time to at lease try women hockey and football. these ladies play hard too. Well i know us real mans will be watching them. And once again great game to both of the clubs.
Who is the dumb a$$? Canadian teams always get that power play......
Okay, wow you should stop commenting for a month...... That last penalty should have been a penalty shot... Maybe that would have been better... But don't be a little bit$have and say Canadian teams always get that power play.
How Do You Spell:
CHOKE!!! Good game But they (COACHING AND TEAM) CHOKED
My Reactions on the missed empty netter and then the tying goal with 55 seconds left
Take a look at the call it like Rick winner on the home page twice. That game was blown big time.
Don't be so hard.
first of all don't compare them to the sabres. these women have spent countless hours getting ready to play these games. and the women that coach them, that was her first ok they didn't get the gold but she got them a silver. And this choke mess for lol. The sabres chokes in every game they play. And for them to be on a world stage. And was ripping up other teams was great. At lease they can go to their kids and husband and family with the silver. Ladies we love you guys. And if anybody give you any slack about not winning the gold. You tell them we said hush that mouth, for you get punch in the mouth. Leave those ladies along. We like to thank you for showing the young womens in our country that you can do it too. if you just put your mind to it. you got my daughter saying dad; i want to be like them one day. And for lol. my daughter don't watch sports. but she took the the time to watch the ladies of the U.S.A team. And she told me dad im so proud of them. You see ladies you have became instance stars. Hell i didn't know all of the ladies names. but she did. I was amazed at that. Good luck for the gold in the next games.
USA plays for the bronze.
Well ladies see is isn't that bad. You got the silver. the men just might get the bronze. Canada shut us out for the gold. Hey i guess Quick really wasn't that Quick. thats a first for me the us get shut out in the olympics. Now that was a game they played like the sabres. Time to turn of this station. because here come schoop. I told you they were bums. Hey one thing for sure they can't blame miller for that.
Re: USA plays for the bronze
Miller just may be in there in goal to play for the Bronze and blow it.
