Welcome to Quest for a Coach!

This section will be dedicated to the latest news, opinions and interviews related to the Bills' coaching (and GM) search.  Check back often for our newest take!

Bills DC candidate now jobless

(WGR 550) -- When the Chiefs took the defensive coordinator title away from Clancy Pendergast and handed it to Romeo Crennel, it seemed that Pendergast's days in Kansas City were numbered.

On Thursday, right after John Clayton told Mike Schopp and The Bulldog that Pendergast could head to Buffalo to be the Bills defensive coordinator, that number sunk to zero.

Another nod to the 3-4?

(WGR 550) -- Two things to glean from the Bills' reported hiring of Giff Smith as outside linebackers coach, and I think both are entirely reasonable.

1) They are going to a 3-4.

2) There's a good chance they'll take Derrick Morgan with the No. 9 over all pick if he's available.

Report: Bills Hire LB Coach Giff Smith away from Georgia Tech

Report: Bills Hire LB Coach Giff Smith

Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that Giff Smith is quitting his job as the recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech to join the Bills as the Outside Linebackers Coach.

Fillipponi: Gailey got hooked up

It’s not what you know, but who you know.
And that’s why Chan Gailey is moving into his new coach’s office at One Bills Drive today.  Thanks to having people in high places, a friend like Bill Cowher, Gailey was able to sneak through the back door and steal this job.
I hate that.

Graham: Many wanted the HC job

(WGR 550) -- We're the type of people who'll put Tim Graham in the 20 percent of believable reports, and the ESPN reporter joined The Howard Simon Show late Wednesday morning, laying out some more names that he knew wanted the Bills head coaching job, while backing up his report that Marty Schottenheimer was among them.

WHITE: Chan Gailey - Before, During, and After

Jeremy White is at One Bills Drive for today's announcement that Chan Gailey is the team's next head coach.  Here's a running commentary of thoughts along the way...

BUSCAGLIA: Who Is Chan Gailey?

After rising from the depths of relative anonymity, it seems as though Chan Gailey has emerged as one of the top candidates for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. Even though there's only two candidates to my knowledge, it still raises certain questions.

Most know that Chan Gailey is an offensive based coach, and has been for quite some time. But would he be the right hire for the Bills?

Report: Bills High on Chan Gailey

Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News reports that the Bills are considering former Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey as a candidate to replace Dick Jauron. Gaughan cites a team source and a league source.

Gailey was the Coach of the Dallas Cowboys during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. He spent time in the college ranks from 2002-to-2007 as the Head Coach at Georgia Tech.

Ex-Bills coach inked by Pittsburgh; Fewell news

(WGR 550) -- Two former Bills coaches are in the news. One's been hired by the Steelers, while ex-interim head coach Perry Fewell had another defensive coordinator interview, but is holding out hope for the Bills job.

Sources: Schottenheimer declines talk with Bills

Jets' offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's name has been in the spotlight since the Bills' coaching search began.  However, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it looks like the Jets' offensive coordinator is about to take his name out of the running.  Click to check out the ESPN report!

Grimm to interview; SI's King talks candidates

(WGR 550) -- There's news on a couple sides of the coaching front. Head inside for notes on Russ Grimm, Bill Cowher, Mike Zimmer and more.

An endorsement for Frazier

(WGR 550) -- In order to get to know Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier a little better, The Howard Simon Show welcomed in a man who covers the team, and knows a little bit about football, for some Frazier talk.

“In the mold of a Tony Dungy or a Mike Tomlin, I would say he’s going to be a pretty good football coach," said Larry Fitzgerald, Sr., writer for the...

Tim Graham: Young coach's fortunes rising

(WGR 550) -- ESPN's Tim Graham sang the praises of Brian Schottenheimer as potential head coach of the Bills during an informative and often-funny appearance on Tuesday's edition of The Howard Simon Show.

Jay Glazer: Brian Schottenheimer not interviewing at this time

While the Buffalo News is reporting that the Bills have received permission to talk to Jets' offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer tweeted Monday that he will not interview at this time as the Jets are preparing for the Chargers.  Click to check out the ProFootballTalk.com report which includes Glazer's "tweet"!

Weekend "Quest" review: Rivera, Grimm, Garrett news

(WGR 550) -- The "Quest For A Coach" doesn't work for the weekend, it works all weekend. Your Monday wrap-up on candidates for the Bills head coaching job in inside.

"Bill"-board, v.2

(WGR 550) -- Here we go again.

A Buffalo-based web site has raised enough money to erect a billboard aimed at convincing Bill Cowher to come to Buffalo.

WGRZ: Schottenheimer thinks Cowher interested

(WGR 550) -- WGRZ's Adam Benigni is reporting that the Bills continue to pursue former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher to fill Buffalo's vacant coaching position, although Vic Carucci told Channel 2 that Cowher is unlikely to come despite passionate pursuit from the suits at One Bills Drive.

Wiley on Cowher, Schottenheimer, Buffalo

(WGR 550) -- ESPN's Marcellus Wiley joined The Howard Simon Show for a Thursday morning appearance and named another factor that may be deterring coaches like Bill Cowher from ending up as Bills head coach. Wiley also talked about his connections with Buddy Nix and Marty Schottenheimer.

WIVB: Grimm contacted, not initially interested

(WGR 550) -- Channel 4 has spoken with Arizona Cardinals assistant coach Russ Grimm. This is taken from their WIVB.com report:

"The Bills have reached out to Arizona Cardinals Assistant Head Coach Russ Grimm, asking for an interview. NFL sources say Grimm is very high on the Bills list of potential coaches.  But Grimm..."

CONFIRMED: Billick no official contact with Bills

(WGR 550) -- WGR has spoken with Brian Billick, and the former Ravens head coach was willing to talk about his coaching future and its connection with Buffalo. As reported Tuesday on The Howard Simon Show, Billick has had no official contact with the Bills, that he has not interviewed with the team and has no interview set up with the team.

Shanahan will coach Washington

(WGR 550) -- The Associated Press is reporting that the long-rumoured is true: former Broncos boss Mike Shanahan will be the new head coach of the Washington Redskins, to the tune of five years and $35 million.

ESPN: Cowher met with Bills

Sal Capaccio had the story first but ESPN's Chris Mortensen has now confirmed that the Bills held a "stealth meeting" with Bill Cowher this week and he believes those meetings included Ralph Wilson Jr.  Click for the entire story!

Yahoo! Sports: Two to interview

Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole is reporting that Brian Billick, the Baltimore Ravens' head coach that guided the team to a Super Bowl win over the New York Giants in the 2000 season, is expected to interview for the remaining vacancy at One Bills Drive next week.  In addition, Brian Schottenheimer will interview as well.  Click to read the entire story!

Report: Cowher "interested and impressed" by Bills

(WGR 550) -- Profootballtalk.com is citing a report by Buffalo Sports Daily that Bill Cowher is "interested and impressed" with the Buffalo Bills and their job opportunity.

Weis interested in Buffalo?

(WGR 550) -- The Buffalo Bills have contacted Charlie Weis about a coaching position, and the former Notre Dame boss is interested in the gig, according to WIVB.com

PFW: Lowdown on Ass't Coaches

Mike Nolan, Mike Zimmer, Mike Heimerdinger and even some guys not named Mike (Who is Rob Chudzinski?!?). Pro Football Weekly's staff has an informed write-up of those coaches who aren't on the "A-List"

A Change of Pace

(WGR 550) -- What a difference a coach makes.

Whether or not, it's the same-old, same-old come Sunday in Jacksonville, Perry Fewell's practices are anything but similar to Dick Jauron's preparation sessions. Music blared during the portion of Friday's practice the media is allowed to watch, and it wasn't the same Offspring song Jauron's camp popularized during...

MENDOLA: Immediate Reactions, Fire(d) Jauron

Nick Mendola says you don't have to feel bad for being happy a man lost his job. Dick Jauron made -- and will continue to make -- millions of good American dollars for coaching American football.

It's time to have fun, and dare to dream, with the possibilities of the Buffalo Bills upcoming changes.
