Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that Giff Smith is quitting his job as the recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech to join the Bills as the Outside Linebackers Coach.
Smith coached under Chan Gailey with the Yellow Jackets. This will be his first time coaching in the NFL.
Is this all we are going to get is all of Chan Gailey's cronies? If I remember correctly Georgia Tech wasn't all that good under is tenure. I was willing to give Gailey a chance, and I understand wanting to surround yourself with people you know and trust, but this is getting out of control.
01/26/2010 5:16PM
Really???
Par for the course I guess
01/26/2010 5:25PM
You know the phrase...
The rich get richer? Well this ain't it!!!!
01/26/2010 5:25PM
Wow
Lets just hire the entire Georgia Tech coaches! sheesh! i mean really how am i supposed to get excited over a football team that hires all guys from a COLLEGE football program that went 7-6 in Chans last yeaer there in 07! my lord even KC pulls in Weis. DO SOMETHING WE CAN BE PROUD OF!

gotta be switching now.

Come On People
Seriously will you people give this guy a chance? When the Steelers hired the Chin, did anyone ever here of him? Did anyone hear of Tony Dungy when Tampa hied him? I think not. I guess what I am trying to say is give him a chance before we pass judgement. We can hire the best coach out there, but if you don't have the players we don't succeed! Your boss at work is only as good as his or her people let's remember that!
01/26/2010 5:33PM
Ralph loves the price!
"and we get him for a bargain" is all that is heard in the halls of a Detroit bunker. Lets see if the softees at the Buffalo News have the guts to call out the new boss on these inexperienced and cheap hires to turn the woeful franchise around. We know Ralph is happy at the price. Balt hires an LB coach who was the DC in NE for years and we hire an LB coach with no pro-sideline background. Amazing.
01/26/2010 5:34PM
3-4 Coaches are needed.
Well, Get use to it. he geting people who he trusts. winning records, don't mean much. his looking for good teachers, for the 3-4. which is a good start and less predictable.
01/26/2010 5:47PM
Arent the Linebackers Veterans?
If our Linebackers need coaching just get rid of these guys, and coach some new blood. Pos, Mitch, Ellis, still need coaching??? haha get rid of those bums!
01/26/2010 6:06PM
I GOT IT!
I know what we should do! All the people who constantly post comments online to articles about the Bills and Sabres should be hired as the President, General Manager and coaches of both teams. They obviously know all there is to know about sports. They can then reject every feasible move either team could ever make, cut or fire everyone else, and play the games themselves.
01/26/2010 6:09PM
Surprised?
I'm amazed that everyone is so surprised. So, to save your blood pressure, the bills will hire a no name defensive coordinator. Fill out the rest of the staff with his friends and change the bills name to the Buffalo Nepitists. I'm just embarrassed to wear my bills hat here in LA....
01/26/2010 6:18PM
I figure
Pos will break his arm somehow next season early, should just promote him to LBs coach then. (I joke)
01/26/2010 6:22PM
Calm down folks......
.....he's only coaching the outside LBs. Let's not panic until we see who ends up coaching the INSIDE LBs. Then we can think about hiring a left tackle coach, and so on.
01/26/2010 7:02PM
BILLS ANNOUNCE
Ed Smith, local Farmer, Signed on to the Head Coach of the Equipment and Weather conditions. Ed will make sure every ball is pumped with plenty of air and make sure kicking tees are quote "superb." He will also be payed 500 million, making him the highest payed coach in any sport ever. When asked Ralph Wilson responded " Hey, he was Cheap!"
01/26/2010 7:04PM
relax
What coach doesn't hire the people they know why is everyone surprised. Coaching does not matter unless you have the players Buddy Nix was the smartest thing the Bills could do look at the track record!!!
01/26/2010 7:09PM
what is this.....
the hooterville bills
01/26/2010 7:25PM
This is crazy
No experiance needed to help our franchise turn the corner. I was willing to give Chan a chance but hiring old buddies is out of control. What is our new G.M say about this. Oh I forgot he is just another Wilson puppet.
01/26/2010 7:31PM
our new QB is...
former ga tech QB....joe hamilton, maybe we can get keith brooking. stafon marbury is available and kenny anderson would make a great right cornerback coach. yep i ran outta ga tech names.
01/26/2010 7:41PM
read this
Smith's defensive line was one of the premier units in the ACC in 2007. Georgia Tech ranked first nationally in sacks and second in tackles-for-loss while ranking in the top 30 in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense. Junior tackle Vance Walker earned first team All-ACC honors and senior end Darrell Robertson was a second team selection. Junior Darryl Richard was second team Academic All-America.Also in 2007, Smith watched eight true freshmen that he helped recruit play key roles as rookies. Running back Jonathan Dwyer and quarterback Josh Nesbitt, two highly-recruited Georgians, highlighted one of the nation's top recruiting classes. In each of Smith's four seasons at Tech, the Yellow Jackets have ranked in the top 30 nationally in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense. The Georgia Tech defense has been exceptionally strong against the run, ranking in the top 20 nationally each of the past four seasons

01/26/2010 7:46PM
Seriously?!
What is wrong with some of you. People are upset because we hired a linebackers coach that knows our HC? Or because he's not a known name? Give me a break, what did some of you want Bill Cowher as the LB's coach. Some people will always find something to complain about.
01/26/2010 7:47PM
Who cares?
I gave up a looooong time ago. The city has good neighbors and that's it!!! We will never win a major championship get over it!!
01/26/2010 7:48PM
smith
he mostly has experience coaching defensive line not LBs
01/26/2010 7:53PM
What?
Don't you hire a Def. cord. first? Then your Def. staff
01/26/2010 8:52PM
vic fangio for DC
make it happen bring the 3-4
01/26/2010 9:13PM
Big Joke
What a joke this is. We are hiring washed up college coaches who couldn't win in college and are expecting different results in the NFL. Wait a minute, thats how Ralph plays it. He has experience and comes REALLY CHEAP. What a winning formula. This team is the laughing stock of the NFL and they continue to prove it with these loser hires. Nothing will ever change with a 91 year old running the show. What a Joke!!
01/26/2010 9:20PM
seriously
Well, can't say anything is a shock now. A ho hum coach is hiring a bunch of guys with no experience that he has ties with. This is like a high ranking executive coming in and just hiring his buddies. Sounds kind of like a fortune 500 company orthe government.
01/26/2010 9:22PM
i poop in urinals
that's ignorant, like most of the comments above...
CHAN IS THE MAN.
and GIFF, folks take a SNIFF.
01/26/2010 9:28PM

01/26/2010 9:39PM

01/26/2010 9:56PM

the buffalo bills did not sign the offence cordinator,i think we did not sign this guy
01/26/2010 9:57PM

poop
01/26/2010 10:44PM
do we have a def cord yet?
wouldnt it be smart to fill that position first
01/26/2010 10:45PM
LBs at Tech
Actually, Tech had a pretty good LB core under Gailey... Not sure how much Giff Smith was involved in coaching them, but Key Fox (Pittsburgh), Gary Guyton (Patriots), Philip Wheeler (Colts), Gerris Wilkinson (Giants), and Daryl Smith (Jaguars) all playedLB under Gailey's watch. That's 5 players from at the same position who have been drafted in the last 5 years (more than any other position for Tech during that time period).
01/26/2010 11:59PM
Milk does a body good
I could care less. Someone just tell that hack Poz " less juice, and more milk this offseason." He looks like he might have issues.
01/27/2010 12:17AM
And...
What did you expect? Dan Reeves, as OC c'mon sportsfans this is Buffalo Bills football!! PUNT!!!
01/27/2010 6:47AM
Looking for a job
I hear that the Jamacin bob sled team are looking for a spot on the Bills staff/team as well...
01/27/2010 7:06AM
My issue
I would think that the defensive coordinator whoever that may be should be putting his own coaching staff together not have coaches that have worked with Gailey forced down his throat. This is getting painful to watch.
01/27/2010 7:28AM
Who?
Good lord, I really need to pick a different team, we are soooo far away....
01/27/2010 7:31AM
Looks LIke....
the bills are going to be the first ever PRO COLLEGE TEAM in the NFL wow another first for the lovely Buffalo Bills.
01/27/2010 7:32AM
Give it a rest!
Come on everyone, relax! we have nothing but time to wait for a winner, we waited 10 years whats another 10! Good thing I relocated to the south, I only get to see the Bills play a few times a year when the networks get stuck with the Bills game.
01/27/2010 8:21AM
Didn`t win with the coaches we had here b4
Look at all the big name coaches we had in here on Jurons staff.I never heard of almost all of them, they came from nowhere to coach here! It can`t get any worse than what was here.Actually,Having guys that coached at a top college program,is what we really need here, new blood.Give these guys a chance b4 you start knocking them.
01/27/2010 8:22AM
Kansas City Yellow Jackets
Ralph the Buffalo Bills are a joke. Take the organization to the wall is what you stated when rumors of a move were swirling to LA. I think you have accomplished that already.
01/27/2010 9:00AM
Move that bus...
with the entire Bills team on it! To another city for good! Talk about not even trying to win... LMAO!
01/27/2010 3:24PM
