HAMILTON: Can't win consistently with a bad power play

Buffalo, NY, (WGR 550)  -- If the Sabres have any chance of going on a streak and getting themselves in the playoffs, the power play has to be better.

Coming in to Tuesday's game against Winnipeg, Buffalo was 26th in the NHL going two for their last 34. One of those two goals was on a 5-on-3.

Winnipeg is the worst penalty killing team in the NHL, yet in Buffalo two first period power plays, the Jets had the better chances and Ryan Miller had to stop a couple of Jim Slater breakaways.

T.J. Brennan isn’t going to get too many more chances if he doesn’t produce and he was beaten badly by Slater both times. He also had another hard shot on the PP that went wide. It seems like he misses the net more than he hits it.

Marcus Foligno is back on the PP. He had a nice entry, but then lost the puck easily on the wall.

They had one good dump in and retrieval which got the unit set up. Between the two man advantages, they got one scoring chance, a Thomas Vanek tip. Tyler Myers hesitated trying to keep a puck in which allowed Evander Kane to blow right by him for another breakaway that was stopped by Miller.

In 3:44 of power play work, Buffalo got three shots on Ondrej Pavelic with one decent scoring chance. Brennan led the team after the 1st with 2:19 of power play work.

There were no power plays in the second period.

Buffalo had one power play opportunity in the final period when Evander Kane got two minutes for high-sticking, but once again, the Sabres could not convert. Brennan ended up leading all skaters on the team in power play ice time with 3:38, just ahead of Vanek who finished with 3:34 on the man advantage.

"It's a lot to lump on him," Ruff said of Brennan on the power play. "A young player like T.J., to sit over there and try to run it. But that's where I put him and that's where he's been best. It's not an easy job."
