Sabres: Myers Growing Pains

(WGR - Bulldog) Growing Pains

Whiner Line caller..."Stop comparing Tyler Myers to Zdeno Chara.  He's not Chara." This isn't exactly a cheap shot at the Whiner Line.  The point gets made plenty often enough to me via E mail.  It's just that I hear the Whiner Line every day after I drop my boys off at school and well that's really it.

Right, of course he's not Chara.  Chara is great and dominant and mean and has won trophies individually and, you know, that big team one they give out every spring/summer.  He's a captain and climbs mountains for fun in the off season.  So no, Myers is not Chara.

Chara is also on  his 3rd team. It took him some time to prove that he could be the game dominating wrecking machine he is.   And maybe he only did the mountain climbing thing one off season.  Whatever.

Here's the thing about the Myers Chara comparison.  The Sabres are paying Myers to be Chara right now.  Myers got $10 million in July. No lockout changed that.  There is no arguing that he's nowhere near Chara-ville in his play.  Anyone can see it.

Myers has miles to go and watching him play this season could certainly give you reason to doubt whether or not he'll ever get there.  That, more than any other single thing, is what has left the Sabres with 6 teams to climb over just to get to 8th place in this shortened season.

You know what really can screw up your team chemistry?  Pay a 23 year old $10 million and then watch him not only struggle, but on most nights, be your worst player.  You think you feel let down as a fan, how do you think his teammates feel?  How would it go over where you work if your success was dependent on a guy who just got paid that bonus and he showed up at work and not only didn't help you do your job better, he sucked and dragged you down with him?  I'll bet you'd go home complaining about him to your spouse.

The idea of Myers getting it together this season is starting to feel more and more far fetched to me.  The warning signs were there in the week long training camp when the now fired coach talked about his conditioning being an issue. I know he scored the winning goal on Tuesday in Tampa but don't even waste your breath trying to tell me had any kind of good night.   Florida last night was more of the same.  Uneven at best. At this point making it out of shifts without a gaffe feels like progress.  Myers is still nowhere near where they need him to be.  Dominating games and being their best player.

All that said, I'm still not moving him.  Should this season continue to track the way it's been going, there will be plenty of conversation about what the Sabres should do with their roster.  A last place team should not have a long list of untouchable players, but the giant defenseman still tops mine.

Is this year a good sign?  Of course not. Myers got the big check, a lockout happened, and he showed up in bad shape.  He let the team down and more than anyone else dragged them down to the bad record they still have. Myers has been largely uneven since a great rookie year and there could be a danger in just expecting him to regain his form.  At some point, you have to just accept that he's more the guy who has been largely inconsistent than the player who won the Calder.

I'm just not there yet. He just turned 23.  He's 6'8" and when he's not tripping over himself, can really skate.  Maybe this year will really embarrass him.  Maybe he'll find a way to put on weight and improve his conditioning.  Maybe he'll grow up some more this off season.

Maybe he'll still be great.  I'm not done thinking about that possibility and am quite sure the Sabres aren't either.  I hope so.  I know Myers has been here a while now, but he's still a kid.  Let him grow.

You guys sure beat the obvious to death
I think WGR management needs to make a number of changes. This stuff stinks. Time to be a grown up station don't you think?

Meat and potatoes
A week before Lindy was fired he had said that Tyler needed to work on his strength and conditioning. He said the only way that could be improved is in the off-season. If I`m the Sabres, I`m sending him up to Toronto this summer and having him work with Gary Roberts. He`s done wonders with Stamkos and Hodgeson

Chara
I agree, no panicking allowed. In Chara's first 4 seasons (ages 20-23) he had a combined 29 points and was a whopping -61!!! Granted he did not have the pedigree of a 1st round pick or the expectations that come with it. I think it's time though to accept that Myers 7 year deal with $5.5m cap hit may be an overpayment now but the gamble and hope is that in years 3-7 he's a steal. That said regression rather than progression is not what anyone expected.

Size doesn't Matter
I'm officially now in the camp of size doesn't matter. It's great to have big, bruising guys, but Gerbe proved again last night that hockey sense and heart can beat size. Other than "an ability to be tall", Myers hasn't shown any abilities the better part of last year and almost none at all this year. There is no threatening one-timer from the blue line or a sense of "hey winger, come into my part of the rink and you'll feel it" attitude. And forget all those turnovers...Very disappointed with his lack of development and he should be used in a package trade.

More balanced reporting lately
I wrote a comment titled "Myers Struggles Overstated" after the media jumped all over Meyers two games into the season. On one hand I'm forced to eat some crow for that one. On the other hand, I'm happy to see that the media are also seeing the upside that Meyers still has. Stafford at 27 is a bigger problem than Meyers at 23 in my opinion.
03/01/2013 10:48AM
I respectfully disagree
Myers must still have some trade value, and I would not give him away. However, if he fetched the kind of high-end forward (even center) this team desparately needs, I'd take it. Then turn someone like Ennis into the best D-prospect you could get...Just a thought, but this team is a longgg way from the cup, so let's clean out some underachievers!
03/01/2013 10:53AM
Time to start talking about Stafford
Stafford makes $4,000,000 a year. 1 goal minus 8. Why does no one say anything about this waste. It's always Myers, Leopold, Gerbe and now Foligno. Stafford is the new Scott Gomez. Time for him to give up the "A". He is no leader. He needs to watch a few from upstairs. This guys needs topaick his bags along with Hecht.

Agree and Disagree
I agree that Myers needs more time and there is a greaater liklihood, given his talent, that he will improve. However, I do not think he is ever going to be a dominanting type D-Man. Its not in his nature. I don't put him on the same pedestal you do. I wouldn't trade him based on my displeasure with his performance - he'll get better (there have bee signs within games that its occuring). would trade im if you could get something as good or better in return -like a #1 center with size.

Myers
To me, right now, Erhoff is more worth his paycheck than Myers. But This is a team that when on its game can skate, I can see Myers improving this year and Shouldour pp wake up, both those 2 will be a huge part of it! They kind of have to be..
03/01/2013 11:49AM
Bullshot
I expected Myers to be like Chris Pronger. I don't call or listen to the whiner line. The hosts should have duct tape on their mouths and hands tied behind their chairs and let the calls play through without interruptions. Wasted time with their pie holes running and not the tape of the whiners telling the truth. Always a dumb smart al lic remark especially by the idiot Fisher and then other two start to motor about something else. I think its ignorant. LET IT PLAY AND SHUT UP or JUST PLAIN DROP THE SEGMENT. By the way is there duct tape in the studio and can the microphone be taken away from the booth from smart al lic? What a waste of a segment.

Growing pains
No growth in 2 years, but please be patient!!! Also continue to pay him the 10 million he deserves.

HA!
"Right, of course he's not Chara. Chara is great and dominant and mean and has won trophies individually and, you know, that big team one they give out every spring/summer. He's a captain and climbs mountains for fun in the off season. So no, Myers is not Chara."Couldn't have said it better myself. But you are right. He's getting paid like a Chara. I think he's got the potential to get there, but jeeze. Show me something... anything!
03/01/2013 12:16PM
Good job.
Hell of a good job typing that on your iPad!
03/01/2013 12:28PM
bumsfan
Go back and look at Meyers play from his first games up until now. He always was a poor puck handler and poor passer. He probably is being targeted by opponents when he has the puck because the skinny on him is he gets panicky when forechecked. He can skate in open ice with the puck very well. It's up to his coach help him overcome this shortcoming.
03/01/2013 1:01PM
Send him to...
Gary Roberts this summer. From what I heard, He put the weight on, but is having a hard time handling being bulkier. I think the sabres need to decide what type of D-man they want....a mean crusher or a smooth skater that gets points. Having both is pretty rare and I just don't think Meyers has both in him....
03/01/2013 1:37PM
Chara
Chara was not the player he is now in his first few years of his career in NY... Gotta give myers some time, hes still young, i dont think this would be as big of a topic if he wasnt raking in the Big $$
03/01/2013 1:49PM
Rolston
Rolston was good at teaching young kids in Rochester. Hopefully, after he gets the whole team to where they need to be he can work on Meyers.
03/01/2013 2:34PM
Bulldog Babble
Anyone notice how "Bulldog" always sounds like he had a six pack before he goes on the air.
03/01/2013 3:04PM
GARY ROBERTS
Tyler needs a good dose of Gary. Im sure Hodgsen must have had that conversation with him by now. At least I hope he did.
03/01/2013 3:34PM
my patience
Is running thin though. He looks as though he does not even below in the league. Even if he came in out of shape I would think he would be in shape by now. He is only 23 and should be dominating out there and instead he doesn't know where he needs to be and avoids doing the dirty work in the corners. If no improvement by next years trade deadline then I think it will be time to consider moving him.
03/01/2013 8:34PM
Re: Bulldog Babble
I heard it was a twelve pack.
03/01/2013 8:42PM
I still say...
FIRE EVERYBODY!!!
03/01/2013 10:17PM
TMy is Oh My
I agree. Patience is the key here. This kid is playing with no confidence, is running around with his head cut off and is totally frustrated. Lots of excess energy is going everywhere but the right place. You can actually see him thinking and not naturally reacting. He's trying not to make mistakes but this is causing his game to suffer. The instruction he is getting to improve is not yet instinctive and until he relaxes, makes a few good plays and starts recovering his confidence his game will continue to be spotty. The good news is he is going to be very good. And quite honestly, we are seeing the same thing with Grigorenko. Except he isn't yet confronted with the pressure of a spectacular contract.

Time for Tyler to get grounded - not benched
I heard one of the NJ pundits say that Myers came to camp physically unconditioned. That seemed obvious to me also. Their take on it was that his Calder Cup year came too easy to him. He was given elite status pay and pressure with it but because everyone believed he could be in that rare air group. Everyone was telling him he could do it, so, being 19y.o. he believed them. It was all too quick and easy. There is a Top 50 nhl defensemen list on the internet that includes: Chara, Weber, Campbell, Karlsson, Phaneuf... and also includes Myers. This is pretty good company and more information telling Myers he should be in that company. I happen to still believe he could be in it, but, I think he needs someone who gets him and can help him come down to where he is and ask him if he really wants to do what it takes to move on up. If he says yes, then someone should help him change his work style and ethic. I don't know what is going on in his head but I'd have to guess that he has a lot going on that could use the right veteran to help him understand where he is, where he wants to go and how to get there. That's neither quick or easy if he wants to be among the elite.

This team is a joke and Regier won't change it
Terry gave him the key to remove the shackles. Did he give him the right key? This GM won't do anything. What is going on over there??? The bottom should really fall out now. What a joke! Fire this idiot.

Unbelievable - Myers, Regier & The Midgets
I have been a loyal follower of the sabres since 1971 and just witnessed them barely sneak away with 2 points from the devils despite some atrocious play by Myers and Ennis who again blew coverage on the 3rd goal. Terrible body positioning, puck possession, and retrieval by the sabres in their own zone. Give Myers more time?...he's had 3 years. Him and Ennis and Stafford and Gerbe and Enroth and Sekera haven't developed...further justification alone to fire Regier some of these guys are "supposedly" 1st round blue chip draft picks. I have my doubts on the Grigorenko's determination. Ehroff is like Zhitnik with poor shooting accuracy. I certainly hope that Mr. Black and Pegula recognize the issue and swap Ennis or Myers or Grigorenko draft picks to Avs for O'Reilly in 364 days. Hecht, Stafford, Leopold Regehr each have 2 goals or LESS IN OVER 20 GAMES...certainly not stanley cup material... so why not make the changes and turn the page as soon as possible rather watch the "heroic" run to 9th place again? They have looked like the Bills too often in recent years...outsized (too many midgets) and oustkilled. One Steve Ott does not consitute a makeover...please get more.
03/04/2013 8:32PM
Regier assembled this midget team
and those who are not midget, they are only average size in teams like Bruins, and they perform worse than midget in toughness and in skill. Regier overpaid every single player in this team. Regier should be 'proud' of the money he spent around .... hundreds of millions over the years. This guy is a human trash dump.
