Sabres Listless in 4-0 Loss to Islanders



The Sabres' losing streak hit four straight on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders. Buffalo was booed off the ice for the second time in as many home games.

After nearly full two periods without a goal, the Islanders found the net twice late in the 2nd period. Mark Streit opened the scoring at 17:51 and Michael Grabner made it a 2-0 game just 1:05 later. Buffalo heard it from the First Niagara Center, leaving the ice to a chorus of boos.

John Tavares put New York up by three goals 4:24 into the final period by sweeping around the Buffalo net and flicking a shot past Miller. Colin McDonald added a late power play goal to make it a 4-0 final. The Sabres look to snap their winless streak Tuesday at Tampa Bay. Hear the call on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

Gutless, get everything they deserve
As much as I want this to be rock bottom, I honestly hope it gets worse from here to finally stick it to Darcy, I cannot believe this man still has his job, his decision making over the last 15 years is ridiculous, who gets rid of the amount of players he has, without restocking talent and letting guys go without nothing in return, to wasting drafts picks, etc... can go on and on. He made 1 decent move in the past 10 years by getting a first rounder for Gaustad which at this point looks like a wasted effort since he cannot develop a team or a system at all. I mean how ridiculous is it that Lindy clearly did not prefer small, soft, whiny, prima donna guys (roy, connolly, afinogenov) yet these two guys claim they were joined at the hip when the reality is their philosophies could not be any more different. I hate to bring it up again but who in their right mind gets rid of BOTH, BOTH Drury and Briere? Guys that are so difficult to find, once in a generation type of gritty, skilled, tough, and smart players. Yet this man (Darcy) has had the nerve to fumble around this team for 15 years. It is an absolute joke of a team and I am glad it is going like it is. I hope 6 or 7 guys are gone at the end of this year, I'm willing to start over with a young team. At a loss for words right now.

Tough way to get your first break in the league....with this weak bunch. Lindy will be vindicated and Regier rightfully fried after this pitiful season for the mess of a roster he's created over the past few years. A team built in his image...whiny, chinless and with no stones. A total roll over. Best thing you can say about this season is its short.

was the worst player on the ice last night by far. Was partly responsible for 3 of the goals, lazy lazy play. He looked bad. I know its growing pains, he should be good in time. But he was horrendous.

We need Darcy to weave his magic again
Darcy is the fix-it guy. He is always there when this team is in need. When we needed centers, he drafted two. When we needed toughness he found two tough guys. Now we need heart. Let's hope he can weave his magic once again, pull a rabbit outof his hat, and come up with a clone of Callahan or Giroux or Kesler. In Darcy We Trust.

The old players are saying "that's how it is here" when you're one Terry's boys. A well intended owner who is blind to his own faults. Rolston is a fond of Gerbe havining coached him before as a prospect. Get use to seeing Gerbe getting big minutes producing zilch. Leino alluded to it.....the lockeroom is full of problems. This team needs to be blown up.

Big changes need to be made
this team is an embarassment to Buffalo fans,I think Lindys fireing was the right move but more needs to be done,players like Leopold,Stafford,Myers,Hecht,Sekeera,need to get out of here,Im sick of their uninspired play and "confidence" problems,Buffalo desreves a team that comes out and works hard every night, every period,players need to quit whineing and and grow up , you guys are NHL players,you get paid millions,if you dont want to be here then get out of town,we deserve better,

There isn't a coach
out there that can fix this mess Darcy has put together. Darcy should have been shown the door as well. How can one expect Darcy to correct this. It is not going to happen. This is the team that Darcy built.
We sit at 29th. Way to go Darcy. 15 years on the job to get it right and we are only getting worse. This is rock bottom and you put us there. This has nothing to do with coaching. It has to do with chemistry of which this team has none. Terry this seasonis lost and it is time for you to bring in a new GM. I can't believe you extended his contract. Why is Regier so in love with soft Europeon players?
Jochen Hecht is the poster child for softies on this team. In a way I'm happy the team continues to lose. As they say "the eye in the sky don't lie" and Darcy's group of cream puffs is on display for the entire NHL to see, just check the video. Remember when Brian Burke said Regier is the last GM most teams want to deal with? Is the Sabres organization seriously considering allowing Regier to stay on and pick the next player in the draft after the wasted first round pick of Grigorenko? I understand this guy is young but he lacks heart and is the worst skater I've ever seen come out of Russia. I agree with an earlier post. I'm good with the Sabres parting ways with 7 or 8 of these guys and scraping the whole thing. Once again Terry Pagula's poor judgement is obvious. He fired the wrong guy. I loved coach Ruff and have no doubt he comes back to Buffalo behind the bench for another team and kick's the tar out of this soft, lifeless Sabres team. I'm done wit dee's guys!

Erhoff is a joke
I believe signing Erhoff was the beginning of the end for this team. I hear on the Radio about how great he is but he is a defensive nightmare and his offense does not make up for it. He has cost them two games in row with very poor decision making. I believe he epitomizes what is wrong here. I believe if you want to get better start by trading him for what ever your can get and send Leopold with him. They are the same player. Regehr go old and slow over night it seems. Bring Pardy back up and put him with Myers. Myers had his best game the night they played together. Also bring up Mcnabb. This season is over so you might as well start the overhaul. P.S. Brennan is awful as well he does not look even close to ready to play oin the NHL so it is laughable that do not want to part with him. There is no one currently in the organization that they should be unwilling to part with to get better.

I know the new coach is a good guy n very smart but I think the Sabres need an "Enforcer" as a coach-these players are lazy and have no honor-I'd like to see a coach who will make these players earn their hi paychecks either on game ice or practice ice- no mercy to the "precious" players- maybe once they realize that one way or another? they might as well start playing up to their ability and earn some respect

Sabres need new leadership in the locker room.........
People who can inspire and that have some emotion. Jason Pominville is a nice guy, and a decent player, but he is not Captain material. He needs to face up to this and let the team pick someone with an edge like Steve Ott. That guy has the attitude that a captain needs. Ditto with Stafford and Vanek as alternates. Neither of them have the personality to be leaders either. Just because you have been there for years does not automatically qualify you to be a leader. One or all three need to step down in the best interests of the team.

Please, Darcy, dont do anything stupid!
I have never, in all my years of being a sabres fan, seen the team hit rock bottom but last night was that moment. As mentioned abover and the last few years, Ruff could only do so much with the talent that was put on the ice. Rolston is the next victim in what is a horrible team to win with. Now, all that is left is Regier and for the last 15 years of his tenure has he given us any reason to think that he could get us out of this mess? To be honest i dont trust him to make a decent move, especially with his job on the line, he may just make a desperate move to save his job and just make this team even worse. Could we please get a top five pick, because i think we will earn it by the time this year is over, forget tanking, and get a fresh set of eyes in here to restore some dignity and pride into this organization. A new coach and staff and a new gm and a new mentality for the offseason.....please!!!!! Let's bring in a coach who has won in the NHL and breed one from the AHL.

Sabres locker room
Has some flaws in it and needs to be redone. The team doesn't need to worry about players or anything because obviously it's the locker room that wins Stanley Cups. Obviously the locker rooms at Joe Lewis Arena and the one at the old Civic Arena were instrumental to the Red Wings and Penguins recently winning cups.

Terry Pegula and Ted Black
I never asked this when I purchased seasons tickets this season. It may be too late to ask this now, but I'll ask it anyway. Is there enough lifeboats for 19,070 people on board plus players, coaches, owner, management, media members, and the workers??? This ship looks like it may not stay afloat much longer and the water temperature is only 35 degrees. Just heard that four compartments are almost full now. Is that true? We may need the water bug to go get help. Wait, a water bug only survives if the water temperature is 70 degrees or more. We're out of luck with Ennis.

Bolder move needed on the player level to wake up this team.
I think they should just waive Stafford as a way to wake up this team. Who knows if anyone would even pick him up? Darcy needs to do something big, and clearly firing the coach wasn't big enough or didn't hit home hard enough to get these guys' attention.

Rolston's coaching decisions already suspect
Exhibit A: Calling timeout during the second period of the game at 0-0? Probably would've liked that one back to stem the tide later on in the period or in the third while it was still 2-0.Exhibit B: Benching Jon Scott to play Grigorenko when he gets about 0 minutes over the final 50 minutes of the game and then your goalie gets run and you have no one to either provide the nuclear deterrent to running Miller in the first place, and/or no one to put out to at least make a statement (not necessarily get in a fight) at the end.

NO HEART OR EMOTION
This team as evident last night, hell for this shortened season have no heart or emotion on the ice!! This team has to be the worst Sabres team I have ever seen and I have been a fan since the 70's!! It seems every team, no matter what team, play the Sabres the same way. They flood the Sabres zone knowing sooner or later they will cough up the puck!! They look lost in their own zone and get flustered easily, I don't get it!! NO ONE seems fired up or eager to play or hit except Kaleta! I thought this years team was suppose to be hard to play against? This years team is hard to play as a TEAM and I don't see them making any kind of run to make the playoffs, this team is dead in the water or should I say ice!!

What a mess
I know this will sound stupid, but is there some way to move this entire team (WIth the exception of maybe 3 players) to Rochester and pull that entire team to Buffalo? I know it's a waiver/demotion/paperwork nightmare. The Amerks team can't be much worse, can it?. After a series of games you systematically re-introduce some of the stalemate talent but not enough that mental breakdowns are the prevailing weakness. Seriously. Everyone here can easily name 6 or more players that this team needs to dump. That's a huge number.

Replacing the Coach
You make a move like the Sabres did in firiing Lindy because the players are not responding anymore. I get it. But the guy you bring in when the group is as fragile and disloyal as this one is has to carry some weight and Darcy brings in Rolston. Nice guy, yes. Smart, sure. But why would this bunch of overpaid, uninspired players suddenly jump up and run through a wall for him? Just another useless move by Darcy that in the long run will provide no results or produce the intended result. The next coach needed to be the type of coach that brings with him a "the messing around is over" mentality just through reputation alone. Another in a long line of failures by the GM.

I think we can assume Darcy is gone by May. I'm already thinking about new GM's and Rick Dudley is a shrewd judge of talent who has helped Montreal turn things around fast. He's not the GM in Montreal but he's the guy who's had a lot to do with Habs upgrading of talent. If not Dudley, I'd look to the Bruins organization and steal someone from their personnel dept. I hate the Bruins but they have the right mix of talent and toughness.

Everyone Relax! Yes this is the worst and it is tough right now! We're going to get a great draft pick for once. Instead of being mediocre, we are crappy, but its is better for the draft.....#1 pick some good trades for young talent / draft picks, and keep our young good players (we DO have some), and in three years we're a legit contender! They couldn't get Crosby the last time they were in position to get the #1 pick...so what makes you think with Darcy still being the GM that they will hit the jackpot this time around? As far as I'm concerned they have lost the false reputation that they were hanging onto as a team that "drafts well." Booing Proved One Thing
That Lindy Ruff was not the whole problem. I cannot figure out who is teaching these guys on how to pass the puck from tape to tape. If you notice the majority of time they can't handle a simple pass. Then when they do get a face-off win in the offensive zone and it comes to the point - instead of taking a shot to the net they love to pass it around the boards. It seems to me that they play the majority of their games around the boards. I've also noticed that they are confused on which way to turn when they have the puck. It seems that most of the time they turn right into the defense of the other team and turn over the puck for a scoring chance for the other team.

New Captain Needed
The Sabres need a new captain. Just listen to Pommonville after a loss...never sounds p.o.ed just explains the things that need improvment...yada,yada,yada. when does someone get serious MAD!!! Pommonville sounds like "MR. Rogers"

Gerbe is the answer!
Before you all go crazy, let me explain. Gerbe may not be the best hockey player that ever lived, or even best on this team, however the guy has heart. He should be given lots of ice time and told to just be himself. Yes he will take penalties and occasionally lose the puck but I tell you what, I wouldn't want to play against him. He is all fight and doesn't seem to take shifts off. He doesn't back down and he doesn't give an inch (well he can't, he doesn't' have any to spare, but I digress). I enjoy watching him pester the other team. He doesn't win every battle but he makes them play at a higher level and that will lead to mistakes. The new identity of the SABRES needs to be "PRESSURE - PRESSURE- PRESSURE". It force mistakes and get easy goals, and cuts down on the easy entry other teams have to our zone, thus helping the d-fence. Another two things that need improving: 1. You can't let a player with the puck on the wing walk in on Miller unscathed. Miller comes out a long way to challenge the shooter. He shouldn't have to unless it is a 2 on 1 and the def man cuts of the pass (hopefully). The result of Miller being so far out of the net he is virtually out of position to make any save from a pass. This is what happened Sat. Hamilton made reference to it. The other problem withthat play and the second thing they need to do is tie up sticks on plays like that. We had 4 people there and no one tied up the scorer's stick. We have a long way to get to the level we need to win enough to make the playoffs (which by now is not even a remote possibility) and a short time to achieve that level of play. However, we need to improve so we can see who can play with that level and who can't for weeding out purposes next year. So far, not impressed with Rolston. Looks like a deer in the headlights. I want to be fair, so I will wait on a final judgment until he has had ample time, but so far I don't like what I see. Sorry for the length but maybe someone of consequence will read this and take the appropriate action. "Good luck with all that" - right?
