The Buffalo Sabres have named Ron Rolston as their interim head coach.
The team firing long-time head coach Lindy Ruff after winning just six of 17 games to start the season. Ruff has coached a total of 1,165 and won 571. During his tenure, he took the team to the Cup Finals once and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2006 and 2007.
Terry Pegula issued this statement on Ruff's firing:
"The hockey world knows how I and the entire Buffalo Sabres organization feel about Lindy Ruff not only as a coach but also as a person. His long tenure with the Sabres has ended. His qualities have made this decision very difficult. I personally want Lindy to know that he can consider me a friend always."
Rolston played hockey at Michigan Tech and has coached the Rochester Americans' coach for the last two seasons, going 36-26-14 last season and 27-18-3 this year. Previously, he was behind the bench as an assistant for Clarkson, Harvard and Boston College.
Darcy Regier also announcing that forward Kevin Porter has been called up from Rochester.
He is the brother of former New Jersey Devils forward Brian Rolston.
