Sabres Pardy Should Get More Time

Last July the Buffalo Sabres traded Derek Roy to the Dallas Stars for Steve Ott.  The Sabres also acquired defenseman Adam Pardy in the deal and I, like many of you, figured he was just a throw in.

It was the same way I felt about Alexander Sulzer when he came to the Sabres as part of the Cody Hodgson for Zack Kassian deal.

As is the case with Sulzer, perhaps Pardy will turn  out to be more than just a throw in.  He certainly brings an element of size to the corps of blue liners.  Pardy stands 6 foot 4 and weighs 226 pounds.

He brings physical play on defense as well, as evidence by his game in Ottawa this past Tuesday.  I thought Pardy was solid in his own end and the fact that Tyler Myers had one of his better games this season may have been due in part to Pardy’s presence alongside him.

I was surprised Lindy Ruff opted to sit Pardy for Thursday’s game with Montreal.  Ruff had to find a spot for Christian Ehrhoff, who was returning from an injury, but Jordan Leopold seemed like the logical candidate to take out of the lineup.

Pierre LeBrun from TSN/ESPN.com wrote a column about the Sabres this week and spoke to some people around the league in an effort to find out why the Sabres were off to a slow start.

One NHL scout told LeBrun part of the problem is the Sabres defense which the scout said was “too soft.”  Tell me something I don’t know.

With Robyn Regehr sidelined by injury, the physical presence pretty much comes down to Mike Weber and the occasional hit from Myers.  The lack of physical play on the back line is one reason why so many Sabre fans were excited to see Brayden McNabb make it up to Buffalo last season.

Pardy brings a good amount of NHL experience with him.  He played in 183 NHL games over the last four seasons with the Calgary Flames and the Dallas Stars.  The Newfoundland native even has six playoff games on his NHL resume, coming in 2009 with the Flames.

He won’t bring much offense.  Pardy has managed just 4 goals and 29 points in those 183 games but the Sabres don’t need offense right now.  They need someone to stand opposing forwards up at the blue line and knock some guys down in one on one battles, in addition to better decision making.  Pardy showed all of that during his appearance in Ottawa.

Lets have a 'Pardy'
I am with you on this one Howard. I watched Pardy at the Northtown center and the guy was relentless on the body. To the point I noticed he was pissing some of his teammates off on ice. I was okay with that when I was watching the practices at Northtown.I told the people next to me while watching Pardy,"I like this guys physicality and size". Just what this blueline needs!

I agree
Normally I don't like to criticize a decision of the people that do this stuff for a living, but I really liked what I saw from Pardy when he was up. I guess I understand why you wouldnt want to sit someone, but Pardy looked good.
02/09/2013 9:05AM
confused and disgusted
Maybe I am mistaken but wasn't he sent back to the Amerks? If not he will be. We don't need actual defense men here ... If he is not a purse swinging puff Lindy won't play him. Weber will the next one he will sit when Regir gets healthy.
02/09/2013 9:11AM
Yes he should get more time...I like his play.
Pardy should be a regular on this team and wake up the GM and trade Sekera ASAP!!! (I'd even take pylons) This should be our top six: Ehrhoff, Sulzer, Regehr, Myers, Weber, and Pardy. The extra defensemen Leopold and Brennan.
02/09/2013 9:25AM
Leopold
I don't understand the love affair with Jordan.
02/09/2013 9:53AM
Disagree
toughness /= good defense. His positioning was awful. His partner had no idea what he was doing half the time. Great effort but not a good hockey player. We need Regehr, Myers, and Weber/McNabb to step up the toughness or the season will be even shorter.Pardy's a good fill in but that's all.
02/09/2013 12:58PM
Pardy should be permanent!
I thought he looked good in the Ottawa game and he should be in defensive corps that has given up more goals than any team in the league; can't clear the puck out of their own end, especially in penalty kills; and can't seem to finish body checks. I've questions many of Ruff's decisions lately, but his blindness with regard to the talent (or late thereof) on the blueline baffles me the most.

WGR Fan Poll...Myers
First of all, you got to be kidding that Suckera is in the lineup tonight and Myers is scratched. WHAT A FRIGGIN' JOKE!!! What is this love affair Ruff has with Suckera, Hecht, Gerbe, and Ellis??? Back to the poll: What to do with Myers is simple...Get him a new coach. Don't trade him, but trade Suckera. Pardy should be playing instead of Suckera besides. I hope the Sabres lose both weekend games @ Islanders and @ home to the Bruins. I hate Ruff and Regier. WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO BRAD BOYES!!!
02/09/2013 1:20PM

02/09/2013 4:50PM
ANOTHER EXAMPLE!
Of How Ruff under utilizes players. We have a soft Defense and he continues to play Ehrhoff who has been terrible of late. I would have thought for the game Pardy played, that he would have stayed in the line up. Just another example of Ruff needing to go! Thisd team is going noooooo where with him at the helm.
02/09/2013 6:52PM
Howard STOP TALKING HOCKEY... PARDY CAN'T SKATE!!
Like many of your colleagues You don't know much about hockey. Day after day we have to listen to things like Sulzer is solid, Miller is elite, Hodgson is great, blah blah blah... NEWS FLASH!!!::: Ah... how bout: PARDY C-A-N-T S-K-A-T-E !!!!! atthe NHL LEVEL. And tell Collier to STOP YELLING! FIRE HAMILTON!!!
02/09/2013 6:56PM
MYERS: STAND UP and BE A MAN!!!
Demand a trade NOW!!! Your career is being RUINED by DICTATOR RUFF!!! You are one of the top 10 defensemen in the NHL!!! Take a page out of Brian Campbell's book: GET AWAY FROM CONCENTRATION CAMP WALMART and make hockey FUN AGAIN!!! GET SMART; GET OUT!!!
02/09/2013 6:57PM
Pardy CAN'T SKATE!!!
He's a BIGGER TRAFFIC PYLON than Leopold, wake up Howard.
02/09/2013 7:16PM
Wasn't Pardy an emergency recall
It looks like he was, so Lindy didn't have the option of using him over a healthy d-man.
02/09/2013 9:35PM
Man!!
Did you see Brad Boyes hatrick tonight!!! That guy is a superstar!!! Just goes to prove Lindy stifles offensive talent.
02/09/2013 9:37PM
MILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLER!!!!!!!
Ryan Miller is awesome!! Could you imagine if your brain was so miswired that you thought he was a bum!?!?!? They would have to call you the village idiot. That is if Orchard Park is still a village.
02/09/2013 9:41PM
typical ruff f up
no one should be surprised.
02/10/2013 8:26AM
Typical
The Grass is always greener... Watch Pardy's inability to stay with NHL forwards and his terrible first pass out of the zone and you'll see why he's only an emergency call-up at the NHL level. I can't imagine what it must be like to be a coach or GM in Buffalo, when you have so many people whining and they have no idea what they are talking about. This is why Grigorenko is stuck in Buffalo, when he should be back in junior. Let the hockey people set the line-up.
02/10/2013 2:17PM
brad boyes hatrick?
what are you talking about? Do I really need to bring up the stats about our offense since the lock out in 2005. Lindy Ruff stifling offense is the biggest false opinion out there.
02/10/2013 5:53PM
Derp derp derp derp
He didn't need to clear waivers again. Basically, he was the only option to move back down without possibly losing another player off the roster when they had to clear waivers. He played alrigt but not so great that it would be worth just ditching Sekera for. Great job reporting. Not.
02/10/2013 10:59PM
Unbelieveable
I have been following the Sabres loyally since 1971. They again have a stable of fine players including many 1st round draft picks, so... * why is their w-l record 5 - 8? * why have the sabres missed the playoffs the last couple years? * what is on R & R's resumes to suggest they have the skills and experience to win the stanley cup? * why does it seem like so many of the Sabres players appear to be afflicted with the Tony Horton (baseball player with an interesting story)syndrome? * why is Gerbe in the lineup instead of Grigorenko when under Lindy they always have been offensively impotent in the 2nd game of back to back game? * what has Gerbe and Leopold done to justify spots in the lineup over other players? * aren't there any players on the farm that are skilled enough above replacement players to bump them out of the lineup yet? * why was Regier infatuated with undersized players in the first place? * why does their defense resemble and remind me of the defensive messes that Jame Patrick was part of back in his Ranger playing days? * why is one of their star # 1 draft picks (myers) benched and his play has degraded to this? * why was Stafford (another first rounder) ineffective when needed and last year and not sxoring again this year? * why is there a lack of creative vision....is it just a coincidence that the head coach lacked this as a player? * why is Miller playing lights out and they are still losing games...is it that goalies can be be too overvalued these days? * why is Enroth another blue chip talent ineffective? * why is Vanek showing signs of slowing down now that games are taking a toll? * why does anybody think Ennis is a top 2 line center? * why does Ennis and Hecht lose such a large pct. of faceoffs? * what do Patrick and Adams have on their coaching resumes that show that they are good coaches? * why do the sabres allow so many and score so few (fluke) carom-off-the backboard goals? This is popular now in the league, yet the sabres haven't caught on...why? Don't they practice this? Do the players think of this? Or is there a a lack of creatuve vision and direction? * why do the Sabres tolerate so many players, such as Leopold, Hecht, and Myers doing the ole rather than physically engaging their opponents in critical situations? * why do the sabres often look much more winded or gassed than their opponents as the game wears on? back when they had drury grier and briere they'd be down by 1 goal going into the second or third and would come roaring back. Was it physical or mental conditioning (or both?) Myers is a wreck, Stafford doesn't get scoring chances. Neither have Gerbe or Hecht created scoring chances. NBC news has a segment called the Fleecing of America, the Sabres also have a version. The smoke and mirrors gig has got to come to an end soon with R & R. As Bucky Gleason said it comes down to credibility with those 2. Credibility doesn't guarantee wins, but without it and without lots of determination you're either treading water or dead in the water. Their play as a team reflects this. Would you be interetsted in seeing somone with knowledge and respect and is a reknowned great communicator like Pat Lafontaine have an opportunity to coach this team?
