Did you know the two leading scorers in NCAA Division One hockey during the 2007-08 season are both playing for the Buffalo Sabres?

Nathan Gerbe led the nation while skating for Boston College and Kevin Porter was right behind with the University of Michigan.  Porter got the upper hand on Gerbe when it came to the Hobey Baker Award, edging his fellow Michigan native for college hockey’s player of the year honor.

Porter, who signed a two year contract with the Sabres last July, began the season in Rochester and was named captain of the team by then AmerksCoach Ron Rolston.

  Porter was leading the Amerks in scoring with 15 goals and 44 points in 48 games when called up to Buffalo on the same day Rolston was called up to replace Lindy Ruff.

In ten games, Porter has just one assist, while winning 43% of his faceoffs and averaging a career best 15 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time.

Porter is with his third NHL organization with previous stops in Phoenix and Colorado.  The Coyotes selected Porter in the fourth round of the 2004 draft but he chose the collegiate route instead.

The Detroit native played four years for the Wolverines, was named captain his senior season when they advanced all the way to the Frozen Four and he set an NCAA Tournament record with four goals in a victory over Niagara.

Porter split the 08-09 season between the Coyotes and the American Hockey League. He was traded to Colorado in March of 2010 and finished that season with the Avalanche.

The 27 year old played his only full NHL season the following year and was fifth on the team with 14 goals.  Last season, Porter saw his ice time drop to about nine minutes a game and played in just 35 contests.

He is the sixth Hobey Baker award winner to ever play for the Sabres, joining Jordan Leopold(2002), Ryan Miller(2001), Chris Drury(1998), Brian Holzinger(1995) and Robb Stauber(1988).
