Sabres Still Winless, Drop 4-1 Decision to Columbus

Marian Gaborik racked up three points en route to a 4-1 Blue Jackets' victory over the Sabres on Thursday, keeping Buffalo (0-4-1) winless on the season. Thomas Vanek provided the lone goal for the blue and gold.

Columbus opened the scoring just 1:51 into the game on Cam Atkinson's first of the young season. With Miller up in the crease, Atkinson worked his way behind the Sabres' netminder and tapped a Gaborik rebound into the open net. Thomas Vanek tied the score 1-1 about eight minutes later on a between-the-legs shot. Ott found Vanek alone in front of the net, the Buffalo forward drew his stick between his skates and popped the puck between Sergei Bobrovsky's pads.

Nick Foligno put the Blue Jackets back in the lead at 16:35 of the first and Marian Gaborik made it 3-1just 2:12 later, finishing off a 2-on-1 break. Tyler Myers and Mike Weber finished at -3 for the period as the Buffalo defensemen were on the ice for all three Columbus goals. The Blue Jackets upped their lead to 4-1 early in the second on goal by Brandon Dubinsky.

Trailing by three heading into the third, the Sabres managed eight shots in the final frame. Buffalo's best chance came about 11 minutes in, but Vanek was stoned by Bobrovsky on a breakaway.

The Sabres, now 0-4-1, head to Chicago on Saturday to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks at 8 p.m. Rick Jeanneret and Rob Ray will have the call on WGR 550.
