Sabres ink two

(WGR 550) -- The Buffalo Sabres have inked defenseman Andrej Sekera to a two-year deal, and left wing Clarke MacArthur to a one-year deal. Sekera's deal is good for a total of $2 million, $750,000 the first season and $1.25 million the second season. MacArthur's contract is worth $1.4 million.

Sekera, 23, has 27 points in 108 career games, but the 2004 third-round pick had his most productive season in 2008-09. The blueliner scored three times and added 16 assists while posting a minus-11 for the blue and gold. The minus-11 was a team-worst.

MacArthur, 24, has been inconsistent, but posted 17 goals in 71 games last season. The left wing from Lloydminster, Alberta, was a minus-4 and added 14 assists. For his career, MacArthur has notched 53 points in 127 games, and saw his first regular power play stint last year, tallying five goals and five helpers.

Got It Half Right
Sekera=Good Idea. MacArthur=Bad Idea

WHOOOPPE!
after those huge signings it gets me pumped!.. just wondering, will the stanley cup parade run from north st to city hall.. or start at city hall and go north?.. darcy is the MAN!
07/20/2009 9:41AM
Hope
I hope this is to set up a trade.
07/20/2009 9:45AM
MaClarker
Players like him are dime a dozen. All he does is take up a roster spot for a guy like Kennedy or Gerbe.
07/20/2009 9:49AM
agree with above
Sekera has much more upside than MacArthur at this point in both of their careers. It seems like 41 disappeared for very long stretches last year, then chips in a goal in a very unimportant or insignificant time. Sekera will continue to improve, but itseems like MacArthur's progress has leveled off.
07/20/2009 9:59AM
WHO NEEDS PRONGER?
WHEN YOU RESIGN THOSE TWO STALWARTS, THEN GET THEE JOE DIPENTA, WOW! THE SABRES .. MAN.. THEY ARE AWESOME!
07/20/2009 10:00AM
Not Bad
Considering the salary cap implications, it's good to get 2 guys on the roster with a combined hit of 2 million. Saves some money for stafford and gives flexability for a trade.
07/20/2009 10:00AM
Yay...more status quo
Chicago is shopping young players like their going out of style, and the only thing we get are more lame RFA signings. Darcy, pull off a trade for Byfuglien or Barker and MAYYYBE I wont consider this summer a complete waste.
07/20/2009 10:07AM
Sharp
Please PLEASE let this lead to Patrick Sharp coming here.
07/20/2009 10:10AM
Hmmmm......
I still have hope for Sekera. I don't see him on this team once guys like Weber, Myers & Brennan get the call. I was excited for Mac a few years ago but he just hasn't improved. Package Mac, Sekera and a pick for something that fills a NEED NOW! Basically, with these 2 signings....who cares!
07/20/2009 10:14AM
No Hope
Trade? Not in this lifetime.
07/20/2009 10:14AM
Quinn
I guess Larry was sincere in stating his goal was to win the cup!
07/20/2009 10:19AM
No way
You can't stop Andrej Sekera, you can only hope to contain him.
07/20/2009 10:22AM
HUGE!!
Now if we can get Peters resigned...that would be awesome.
07/20/2009 10:36AM
july 20
well, its almost 4 weeks after july 1st. darcy pretty much promised that moves would be made around the 3rd week after free agency opened (because our organization is a bunch of cheap SOB's) but we are still here waiting Darcy. oh lemme guess, u "took a look at the marketplace and saw that its a sellers market and you felt that at this time a trade wasn't the route you were comfortable taking. but you're sure that down the line there will be options." LOSERS!
07/20/2009 10:49AM
ITS JULY
Training camp doesnt even start until September...stop being a bunch of debbie downers and see what they do the rest of the summer. Tanguay and Zubov would be nice additions.
07/20/2009 11:02AM
hey
i agree with the last comment
07/20/2009 11:07AM
To "Its July"
You need to start considering the very likely possibility that the Sabres are done for the summer after they resign Stafford. You need to be prepared for the fact that we're going into the season with another status-quo offseason. That's not good enough for a lot of people and it's not good enough for me.
07/20/2009 11:22AM
would you be against...
trading hecht for a draft pick (nothing important) and signing dom moore to a contract cheaper than hecht's current one?
07/20/2009 11:31AM
heh
they don't need Tanguay, they have too many players like him already and Zubov is too old imo. I'm glad they signed Sekera I see him being a part of a youth movement on defense with Myers, Brennan, Weber and Gragani, and with Butler already being here. Too many fans are worried about guys that other teams have first. I like Darcy's approach, worry about what assets you have first and then if theres something you can add then worry about that. Would you rather then Sabres overpay for somebody you'll all be bitching about after the first 2 months of the season?
07/20/2009 11:47AM
The irony
If the Sabres let them walk for nothing, they get crucified for letting two assets get away. Here they sign them, and they get greif because they're not the right players. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't.
07/20/2009 12:02PM
Lots of Time
I believe some trades are coming..there has to be. Oh well, lots of time left before camp opens.
07/20/2009 12:09PM
sekera
i eally beleive sekera is the worst player on this team. period.
07/20/2009 12:09PM
FRIGHTENING!!!!
this line up is scary....i bet no team in the league wants to play us now
07/20/2009 12:10PM
Post above
Keep dreaming buddy, Sabres have signed one FA in 3 years and you think their signing Tanguay and Zubov? Get off the pipe dude. Yes training camp doesn't start until September but now is when the moves are made. Smarten up, seriousely.
07/20/2009 12:10PM
How
I would like someone to explain how we can add a big time name to this roster? If Sekera indeed signed a contract for 2 mill, and you have to figure MacArthur has to be above 1 mill or he would have went to arbitration, that puts the cap room somewhere around 5.5 mill. That said you can allocate 2.5 - 3 mill to Stafford. now we are around 2 million in cap space. After all that we are still 1 forwards short of a full roster, expect Gerbe/Kennedy to be with the team to stat the season and now the Sabres are about 1 million away from the cap. I think its pretty realistic to think noone wants to take Hecht or Tallinder off our hands so where do you make cap room to sign someone, and you cant trade away prospects to bring someone in because that dosent help your cap problem. Now we can conclude the "cheep" sabres just spent as much as the league allows to put this team together. Calling the Sabres cheep is the most ignorant thing anyone could say about this team. do the make the best decisiions? No probably not, but to call them cheep is pretty stupid.
07/20/2009 12:14PM
PSYCHED!!...
To have a General lead this team to a Cup!!!!
07/20/2009 12:22PM
Before We Know It
it will be September, and we will same roster. Signed, Debbie
07/20/2009 12:39PM
sounds good
i like sekera and i think he'll contribute more this year but MacArthur needs a little more. i think he needs a few more pounds and a little more bite to his game, but a one year deal will hopefully get that out of him
07/20/2009 12:41PM
Re: How
i agree 100%. these idiots who call the sabres cheap are simply ignorant. thank you for clarifying that, its so frustrating to hear people call the sabres cheap, its just not true. look at the dough they've forked over to vanek and miller. Good call, my friend
07/20/2009 12:52PM
RE: How
They spend the money, but it is never on the right players!!!!! It's not really about how much they spend, it's about who they spend it on. There's a reason the Yankees dont win the Series every year. Just spending money isn't enough. They need to spend it on the right players (i.e., not Di Penta, Ellis, MacArthur). Even though they spend to the Cap, they should still be held accountable for HOW they spend it.
07/20/2009 1:10PM
To "July 20th"
I think that you mean that it's almost the fourth week of FA, because tomorrow it will have only been 3 weeks since July 1st. I'm not saying that Darcy will make moves, but he estimated "around the third week" which doesn't even end until tomorrow. His estimate can't be considered wrong, yet, and even if it's this week, it was a rough estimate, so he'd be OK.
07/20/2009 1:13PM
Re: not cheap
Is "cheap" any worse than incompetent? They have to be at least one of the two.
07/20/2009 1:42PM
too far gone
the only thing missing from this so called team is Dick Mauron to coach it
07/20/2009 2:00PM
Sekera Blows
What is with people's fascination with this guy, he's slow, he's weak, he gives the puck away every shift, he can't move anybody from in front of the net...other than that he's great.
07/20/2009 2:07PM
Sekera
Just plain blows.
07/20/2009 2:13PM
hi larry!
its nice to see that larry quinn comments on here!.. how else can you explain any sane person defending this organization.. the people that do are the reason the fans are continued to be played!
07/20/2009 2:28PM
Dear Sabres,
Thanks for letting me have the spotlight this year.Signed,The Buffalo Bills
07/20/2009 3:03PM
to "post above"
read the comment. When did i say we were signing them. everyone keeps complaining that we arent signing free agents so i said the would be nice additions. im well aware they wont sign either one of them. maybe you should smarten up. or at least learnhow to spell.
07/20/2009 3:15PM
Stanley Cup here we come!
With these signings we have the best team in the NHL! Party Time! Thank You Darcy!Darcy you are the best GM in the NHL!!
07/20/2009 3:25PM
Suck-ERA
The Sabres SUCK just like these two lame moves. Mediocre goaltending pathetic defense and the worst forwards in the NHL. Roy wouldnt be a 2nd line center for any team in the league yet he is our first liner. Vanek is the only player we have. We don't compete for Stanley Cups we compete for playoff spots. Ridiculous. Welcome to the SUCK ERA of Sabres Hockey!

Re: The irony
The person who wrote the post, "The irony", is named Darcy Regier
07/20/2009 3:48PM
Cheap
The Sabres def are not cheap and it was smart to resign sekera because of his potential, but I hate the fact that we resigned macarthur, whoever said he is an asset is out of their mind, he is the type of player that we are supposdly not wanting anymore. Darcy used the word compete and Clarke is the opposite he disappeared for long stretches. We are not winning the cup this year so he is not an assest all he is doing is potentially taking up a spot that could be given to gerbe and kennedy. We have 12 forwards not counting kennedy and gerbe and if they are in Portland thats just dumb because they proved they can dominate the AHL and since we arent cup contenders they should be here going through their growing pains in a season where we wont be a big factor. It sure looks like another status quo off season.
07/20/2009 4:02PM
Pessimism Reigns Supreme
If you're so pessimistic about your "passion", like sports and the sabres.. I cant imagine your attitudes towards life in general. God Bless You People
07/20/2009 4:29PM
geez
Sekera? Come on, the guy is at best an AHL defensemen.
07/20/2009 5:25PM
To "Pessimism Reigns Supreme"
I love how anyone that critiques the Sabres must have some sort of depressive personality disorder. Maybe the people complaining are just fed up with a poorly run organization and are disappointed that their team that was contending for the Stanley Cup three years ago is now a borderline playoff team, an also-ran, that isn't doing anything to get better. By and large, are those critics wrong? They're not right about everything. The Sabres aren't cheap, as they're going to be close to the cap after they sign Stafford and their problem is not that they refuse to pay stupid huge contracts to big name free agents. Nevertheless, the Sabres were not good enough to make the playoffs last year and have gotten worse this offseason. They have done nothing to get better. No trades, no consequential free agent pickups. For the last few years, the Sabres have been complacent and unwilling to see clear deficiencies on the team. Is that laudable? Not in my opinion. Are people justified in ripping them? Absolutely. Love, A Happy Person that is NOT Happy with the Sabres
07/20/2009 5:38PM
you're all idiots
and know nothing about hockey
07/20/2009 6:01PM
Optimistic
I'm optimistic about the Sabres chances to repeat the dismal year they had last year. I am optimistic about all the little fast guys that this organization has stockpiled and can take the punishing they get in the corners. I'm optimistic about being the nicest team in the NHL that No other team fears when they come into our arena. Am I optimistic enough for you?
07/20/2009 8:11PM
Me too!
I can't wait for the season to start! With all these super swell kids we have on this team it should make for a really nice outing to hsbc arena every time we go. After we're done checking these boys through the boards we can be sure they'll hold the door for us leaving the arena and pick up our tab at local restaurants after we eat. Those Sabres are just a bunch of good guys! I wish more teams in the league were as accomodating they are. Signed, every other team in the league
07/20/2009 8:30PM
Wrong Players?
I really dont understand some people. Whose contract do you not like? Hecht? Tallinder? Pomminville? when Hank was signed he was playing out of his mind and earned every penny of that contract. He got hurt and that made him soft. Hect was one of our best players and one of the better 2 way players in the league. is he worth his contract now? no but if we didnt sign these two players everyone would have called Darcy an idiot at the time. Its a lose lose situation to be in with fans in this city. Even with pomminville. yea he is very over paid but if we dont sign him to that contract and he has a career year then everyone complains because we didnt sign him cheap when we had the chance...stop acting like we made the worst signings in the world. THey were great when we made them and turned out to be garbage in the end...its not like were the only team that it happens to.
07/20/2009 9:31PM
Sekera
Give the guy a break. He's young and going to get better. I say give him 6 years at a reasonable price (Avg $2mil per). People used to think Brian Campbell sucked, then he made 2 All-Star games doing the Spin-O-Rama and people think the Sabres should have signed him to 5year/$25 million. The only bad move the Sabres have made in the past 3 years is signing Hecht to that contract! And Pominville! And Miller, but only because Enroth is supposed to be really good. So if Miller's deal was for 3 years, it would have been good, but 5 or 6 was too long! I guess you can find negative in anything!
07/20/2009 10:53PM
@ "Wrong Players?"
Thank you. Thank you sooooo much for proving that not ALL Sabres fans are idiots. Sure Darcy has made mistakes. All GM's do. But stop whining about losing Briere and Drury, they haven't done much since and stop whining about Campbell, he hasn't been the same. Darcy is right, big name free agent signings don't pay off. He says he likes our "core," and since this is essentially the same core of players that won the Pres. Trophy, I agree. He also said that he wants to improve the team as well (like in a trade). Theres still 2 1/2 months until the season starts, and there have been virtually no trades so far. If he keeps this team the same going into October 3rd, then yes, feel free to whine about the offseason. But until then, SHUT UP!
07/21/2009 8:23AM
UFAs
That's right, UFA signings don't pay off. Just ask the Penguins who signed 7 last summer and then promptly returned to the finals and won the Cup. Big names or not, UFAs should be signed to address needs, and the Sabres haven't done much to address their needs.
07/21/2009 8:24AM
WHAT!!!
1.4 mil for that guy?,you`ve got to be kidding? Why in the world would you pay a guy that kind of money when he`s afraid to go into the corners or work along the walls cause he`s very weak in the upper body area.Very strange signing.
07/21/2009 8:27AM
3-peat?
Well 10th place has been good enough for management & ownership for 2 years in a row, why not go for 3? I am not sure this team is ready for the jump to 9th place, maybe if they add another old, washed up, injury plagued veteran that should have retired. How much could they get Chelios for? This ownership is pathetic! How is this team of misfits & 3rd liners that close to the cap limit? How does a GM keep his job when his team finishes 10th two years in a row & has little to no room under the cap to sign any actual good players? I wonder why the Sabres were not picked by NHL.com as one of the 10 teams in the league that are on the rise? They must not be as smart as Darcy & Larry. The Sabres will probably really surprise people, with how crappy they are! We get to watch another great goalie waste his career in front of a sub par group of overpaid players. This season should at least be Darcy's last, I know it will be mine.
07/21/2009 8:45AM
Waste
There are still better players out there to grab. And this??? Give me a friggin break!
07/21/2009 8:54AM
Throw us a bone
Remember the days when we actually made meaningful trades to acquire names like Howerchuk, Lafontaine, Briere etc. We need to pump some life into this team and it's fans. I don't care if it's money out for money in just do something to make me want towatch again. By the way Darcy, Chad LaRose was available earlier this summer and the money wasn't too bad. He is the type of player that would look good in a Sabres sweater.
07/21/2009 10:11AM
Darcy saved $$$
Sekera is a good deal..and the MAc deal saved $$$. He filed for arbitration and remember what happened 3 years ago when half the roster went there. For 17 goals, the NHL would have awarded him 2.5 million at least...and we would have been stuck with that.
07/21/2009 10:24AM
Thank GOD I let my season tix go.........
I am so at peace for letting my season tix go and not re-up them for this year. I am so tired of this mickey mouse operation oevr there at the arena. Quinn might be a stellar businessman, but he's a cluster f... for a hockey man. The writing was on the wall when he brought back Lindy and Darcy. I really like Lindy, but some of the comments he's made recently make me wonder. I know why I hate a team like the Red Wings. It's not because they are good and they contend each year. It's cecause they have an owner who WANTS to win. They have a GM who will take risks and me decsions with conviction, good or bad. They have a coach who is very good and gets the most from his players. And most importantly, they have PLAYERS who but into the systems and play it how the coach wants them to play it. Do they always win? No. But they compete. And living in Buffalo, I want a team to identify with, hard working and relentless. No BS and no excuses. This team was way more entertaining to watch when Nolan was coaching (no I don't him back as coach) and nobody so much as sneezed at one of our players. I miss that wolfpack mentality and playing for each other. This team is a joke! The organization is a joke! And as far as the rest of the circus goes, the attitude and mood in the arena most nights is pathetic. Bunch of punks getting drunk or a bunch of skanks looking for a pickup. I'm sick of these people who have no clue. Yeah, I sound jaded and pissed off, and I don't care. Most people on the street feel the same way I do, and if they say they don't, they're full of crap!
07/21/2009 10:25AM
RE: Wrong Players?
Excellent original post, was going to post something similar to that myself. It's funny to see Pominville mentioned as one of those guys, seeing how his contract hasn't even started yet. Last year he made less than Paille (just over $1 mil) and now somehow he is a bust? Have people seen the contract that was given to Gionta just a few weeks ago? 5 years $25 mil? Pominville is set to make 5 years at roughly $28 mil. Gionta had an nice year (20g, 40a) compared to Pominville who had a down year (20g, 46a). Gionta's production has slowly been coming back since his big year of 89pts some 3 years ago (05-06) but it still isn't all that close. Jason has hit the 80pt mark, younger (by about 3 years) and you would think he would have his best production years ahead of him. So to say he is overpaid, I'm sorry you're dreaming. It was a nice story when he was making just barely $1 mil but there is no way he would be making less if he went on the open market back on July 1 of this year. Let's face it, both Pominville and Hecht (usually a 50pt player) had down years. It happens. Like some people have said here already, there is still time to make deals. Look around the NHL, there is hardly anything going on. The truth is that we may not see a move until the arbitration hearings/decisions across the league are finished. At least that's just what I'm thinking.
07/21/2009 10:56AM
RE: Sekera
It's a nice idea but there is no way his agent would let him sign it @ $2 mil. And about Enroth, how many times have we heard stories about great young prospect goalies? I personally can remember guys like Shields, Biron, Noronen, Miller, and now Enroth. It's nice to have these supposed great prospects in the system but how often do they realize their potential? I think Miller showed us a lot last year after signing his big deal and hopefully the best is yet to come. But you don't make decisions that impact your current star players based on what a potential star (Enroth) could become. And to that point, Enroth played decent but didn't really light up the AHL last year so it would seem like he has a few years in the AHL ahead of him. Now if Enroth was forced into action and played a decent number of games in the NHL and played well, then there would be more of a point there. But as of right now, he still has a lot to prove.
07/21/2009 11:05AM
Pat Kane...
NEXT YEAR BABY!
07/21/2009 11:38AM
this is what's wrong with buffalo
buffalo is the butt of the joke to the rest of the sports world. you people are so happy to have a president's trophy, and to have GONE TO 4 straight super bowls??? hahahaha, who cares about making it to the super bowl 15 years ago and winning a meaningless presidents trophy 3 years ago. neither of those matter, and it just shows that you are fine with mediocrity, because you dont have the balls to want your teams to take a real chance of winning a championship. buffalo is a joke to the rest of the country, hahahahhaha
07/21/2009 12:22PM
two awesome signings!
Hey i have MacArthur down for 30 Goals and I compare Sekera to a young biobby Orr. Hey, just practicing for what i'll hear from the talking toupee, Shill Ray and Shillvester
07/21/2009 12:39PM
Re: this is whats wrong with buffalo
im pretty sure everyone has the balls to want our teams to take a chance of winning a championship. to say we dont is just a dumb statement. Unfortunately we dont run the teams and cant take those chances. thats management that doesnt have the balls. not the fans.
07/21/2009 1:18PM
more spring golf
more golf for them Sabres in spring of 2010 people..
07/21/2009 2:11PM
Interesting stats
MacArthur was 19th on the team in average ice time, but was 6th in goals, 2nd in shooting percentage, and 7th in hits.
07/21/2009 2:17PM
paradox
darcy will be berated no matter what he does. he CAN NOT win over everyone in this city. i admire his ability to take the fan out of it. if he listened to even half the idiot fans in this city, the team would be so far out of it its not even funny. look at the leafs for example. John ferguson Jr was the prime example of the fans GM. he made all sorts of signings to appease idiot fans. now look at them. regardless, there will NEVER be a move that everyone likes in this town. they could trade for sidney crosby and you'll get.."well they gave up too much" or "he is a cryer". oh and to the person who thinks pat kane is coming to buffalo next year...what is it like in fun-time la-la happy land?
07/21/2009 3:01PM
RE: interesting stats
thats certainly noteworthy. begs the question, what would that translate into if he was say...4th or 5th in ice time? of course, those stats you found could be the result of playing against other teams inferior players. but that is certainly interesting to point out. i never would have seen that.
07/21/2009 3:05PM
hey paradox!
you like the fact thesabres missed the playoffs the last 2 years? and will miss them again.. give me whatever non-realistic potion you are taking
07/21/2009 3:34PM
@ interesting stats
Ummm, d-men get more ice time than forwards and almost always score less goals and have a lower shooting percentage than forwards. its the nature of the difference between the positions. you can use stastics to prove anything you want. and who cares about shooting percentage anyway? ovechkin is behind dave bolland and adam burish in that category.
07/21/2009 4:16PM
RE: @ interesting stats
Not trying to compare defense to forwards, I'm comparing him to the rest of the team, D and O combined. The point is he makes good use of the limited ice time he was given. The shooting % is there to show he finishes his opportunities (unlike say, Afinogenov). I'm not saying he's a great player, but he just got signed to an affordable contract considering the average NHL salary is over 2 mil. MacArthur's not the problem with the team, and if the rest of the so-called leaders would earm their contracts and perform like they should, then he would be accepted for what he is, a complementary player with above average stats and a below average salary.
07/22/2009 10:27AM
@ RE: @ interesting stats
it's unfair to note that he is lower than many d-men in ice time but above them in goals and shooting %. its totally comparing apples to oranges. please provide the same stats, but just include forwards.
07/22/2009 10:53AM
above average stats???
a forward with 41 points is nothing to write home about
