Sabres still winless after Lightning wins 3-2 in OT

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again into the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box. The Buffalo Sabres are still in search of their first win of the regular season after three games. Buffalo has lost all three games in regulation, and are one of just three teams in the NHL still without a point.

Ryan Miller missed Saturday's game at Pittsburgh with a lower-body injury and will back up Jhonas Enroth tonight. The Tampa Bay Lightning still boast Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos, but former 1st overall pick Vincent Lecavalier was let go in the summer and is now in Philadelphia. As always, you can comment in the thread below. I will also add my two cents in between the scoring plays. For more sports talk, give myself and Brian Koziol a follow on Twitter: @PatWGR and @BrianWGR.

First Period

16:38 - Welcome back Marcus Foligno! A big hit in the offensive zone and is then forced to fight Radko Gudas. The Lightning d-man went right back at Foligno after the hit. That is dumb. You should not have to defend a big, clean hit.

11:34 - A very strong shift by the line of Drew Stafford-Tyler Ennis-Thomas Vanek yields a solid scoring chance in the slot for Mark Pysyk. The rear guard was stopped by Ben Bushop's quick glove hand. Shots are 2-2 nearly halfway through the frame.

7:33 - Wow, this period is flying by so quickly. Shots are 4-3, Tampa Bay but there have been some really good chances both ways that have not hit the net. Some good up and down action.

4:57 - There have been some very nice, big hits early on in this game. I have liked the pace of play and physical side of both teams early on. And the period is still flying by.

Goal Summary

BUF: none
TB: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 3:22 - Marcus Foligno (5 min., fighting). 5:27 - Tyler Myers (2 min., interference). 12:58 - Steve Ott (5 min., fighting). 19:00 - Tyler Ennis (2 min., holding).
TB: 3:22 - Radko Gudas (5 min., fighting). 12:58 - Viktor Hedman (5 min., fighting).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 3, TB - 10

Second Period

15:53 - Still no shots this period for Buffalo as the Lightning have had a couple of good chances thwarted to Enroth. This is brutal. Not only do the Sabres have zero shots, but they have not generated any real offense that would result in shot opportunities.

9:41 - Another period that is moving quickly here tonight, and another period where the Sabres are failing to get many shots on net. It is getting so bad that fans are yelling "SHOOT" even before the player has the puck. You pay your money, you can say what you want as long as it is clean, but that is getting borderline.

8:51 - SABRES GOAL. Buffalo's first power play of the night results in the first goal of the game after a couple quality chances from the point. Cody Hodgson took the puck from below the goal line, brought it to his back hand at the side of the net and roofed a chance past a sprawled Ben Bishop. A needed boost for the blue and gold. 1-0 BUF.

6:25 - LIGHTNING GOAL. A bad break goes against the Sabres, and Tyler Johnson takes advantage to tie the score. The forward had the puck settle right onto his stick after Christian Ehrhoff tried to tip it to an open corner. Instead, a tie game. 1-1 tie.

1:21 - SABRES GOAL. Another power play goal for the Sabres tonight, as Jamie McBain wires a shot into the top corner of the net that I do not think Bishop saw. It was a good play by the team before that to keep the puck in and keep the offensive momentum going. 2-1 BUF.

End of Period

BUF: 11:09 - Cody Hodgson (1) PPG (Thomas Vanek, Jamie McBain).  18:34 - Jamie McBain (1) PPG (Cody Hodgson, Thomas Vanek).
TB: 13:35 - Tyler Johnson (1) (Viktor Hedman, Ondrej Palat).

Penalty Summary

BUF: 11:23 - Mike Weber (5 min., fighting).
TB: 10:19 - Pierre-Cedric Labrie (2 min., hooking). 11:32 - Ryan Malone (5 min., fighting). 14:47 - Radko Gudas (2 min., roughing). 17:11 - Eric Brewer (2 min., hooking).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 7 (10), TB - 10 (20)

Third Period

14:17 - LIGHTNING GOAL. The Sabres have a bad penalty call go against them, and instead of being up 3-1 they find themselves tied at two. Thomas Vanek was in the box for a hight stick when Teddy Purcell netted the equalizer on the man advantage. 2-2 tie.

11:13 - What a great pad save by Enroth on Johnson right at the side of the net. That really could have sucked the life out of the arena.

5:46 - The Sabres have been getting better and better as the game has gone on. This period the team has 11 shots on goal, and a couple of good scoring chances. It seems like just a matter of time before they get the winner.

2:12 - This one has overtime written all over it.
End of Regulation

BUF: none
TB: 5:43 - Teddy Purcell (2) PPG (Ryan Malone, Martin St. Louis)

Penalty Summary

BUF: 5:21 - Thomas Vanek (2 min., high sticking).
TB: 3:10 - Radko Gudas (2 min., interference).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 13 (23), TB - 12 (32)

Overtime

3:10 - LIGHTNING GOAL. Tampa Bay has a mad scramble in the Sabres' zone and Alex Killorn pots the game-winning goal. A killer for Buffalo, who seemed to be primed to take a two-goal lead in the third. 3-2 TB.

End of Game

Goal Summary

BUF: none
TB: 1:50 - Alex Killorn (1) (Eric Brewer, Valtteri Filppula)

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
TB: none

Shots on Goal

BUF - 0 (23), TB - 2 (34)

Final Thoughts

First, the good: two power play goals by the Sabres is a marked improvement over the first three nights. Also, Cody Hodgson getting in on the scoring is something that will need to happen more often to be successful. A two-point night out of Jamie McBain will not happen all of the time, and is a pleasant surprise. However, it is all wasted when the team could not overcome to high sticking penalty and Purcell goal early in the third. There was ample time to get the goal back and re-take the lead. Instead, the game goes to OT and another loss.

Next up for the blue and gold is a date with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The puck drops just after seven o'clock on the flagship home of the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550. Pregame with Mike Schopp and the Bulldog begins at 6 p.m.

UPDATE: Here is the official release from the NHL on the delayed penalty, no goal call that went against the Sabres in the third period. To read about it, click here.
