The Buffalo Sabres trade Thomas Vanek to the NY Islanders
The Buffalo Sabres have traded Thomas Vanek. The trade information was first broken by Newsday Islanders beat reporter Arthur Staple on Twitter at 8:30pm Sunday night - Thomas Vanek has been traded by the Buffalo Sabres to the New York Islanders. The Sabres official Twitter page confirmed the news shortly after. The Sabres will receive in compensation forward Matt Moulson as well as the Islanders 1st round pick in 2014 and their 2nd round pick in 2015.
In his time on the Island, Moulson topped the thirty goal mark in each of his first three seasons. An injury shortened his 2012-2013 campaign limiting his production, but this year in eleven games Moulson already has six goals and three assists. In his 333 career games Moulson has totaled 124 goals and 109 assists and has a career -12 rating. Matt Moulson is also in the last year of his entry-level contract and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Like Moulson, newly named Captain Thomas Vanek, who will also become a restricted free agent when his contract expires after the 2013-2014 campaign ends, and also has 9 points so far this season. During his time in Buffalo the Austrian native played in 598 games totaling 254 goals, 243 assists, and acquired a +29 rating. The Sabres and Islanders do not meet again this season until March 15 on Long Island.

Damm Darcy nice work
1st and 2nd for a 4 month rental... Now get a couple more 1st rounders for Miller, dang Darcy good work dude!
Darcy's nailing it
from all I read Darcy nailed this last draft. This trade is again perfect in rebuilding. One analyst thinks that Moulson should consider a extension here considering what he was traded for. A $7 million a year player. If he stays for $ 5 million great. If he won't take sabres money he can still be traded at the deadline. A Darcy
Cant't believe Regeir pulled this off. One of two things happened he is feeling the pressure from above that he might actually be in danger of losing his job and needed to act or Vanek went to him after last nights game and said I'm not resigning I want out of here. I don't think he could have got much more for Vanek if he had waited till the trade deadline. He still should have been fired by now and still needs to be fired but at least he acted.
Great, more middling draft picks.
I'm glad people are falling for the "re-build" drivel, but don't you suppose that other teams are trying to improve every year as well? Now this team can really fall apart.
A different free agent that will not want to sign a long term contract and a late first round draft choice that will amount to nothing.
I guess this passes as a blockbuster in the Darcy Daze.
Darcy again shows why he's one of the best in the business. Thank God Pegula does not follow the fickle, instant gratification mania of the average Buffalo fan.
Darcy is a keeper.
Realistically . . .
. . . it was a near certaity that Vanek would go to Minnesota next year as a free agent. He went to school there, has a home there, has a wife from there, and has a best friend there. In that light, a first round pick, a second round pick, and another trading chip is a good deal better than losing him for nothing.
Moulson for more picks
don't count on Moulson to stay here. He might need to be traded, too to add to our draft pick total.
Let the race for 1st overall begin......
.......as in 1st overall draft pick because this trade automatically guarantees that the worst team in hockey right now will be even uglier, more boring and less successful to watch. Since when did hoarding # 1 draft picks guarantee a team championships? Obviously, Regier's got Pegula drinking from the same kool-aid to think the only quest now is to be the team with the most 1st round picks in past 3 years (and won't that be the first words out of Black's mouth this week on his WGR show!). Really sad to see Vanek go - and it's one more step toward a growing hatred for an organization I've supported for 34 years. I'm ashamed, disgusted, embarrassed and teetering toward apathy of what's happening in Buffalo.
Do not get too excited
This deal has a foul odor. Yes one player swapped for each other. The draft picks? Wait till the draft to see if they are ever used in Buffalo. They are not part of this deal.
Couple Moves Left...
O'kay the writing is on the wall for Miller if Darcy can find a trade partner. The move after that is important as well. Stafford for a bag of pucks! By the way; I'd like to know what changed their minds. I thought Pegula wanted Vanek to stay. Could it be Vanek told the Sabre's what they could do with any offer, did Darcy not follow through and make an attempt to resign, or was it a big smoke screen by the owner? Just wondering what happened? We'll never know the accurate story with this staff covering it for the Sabres.
The way Darcy is trading, this could be a very fast rebuild.
It all depends upon Devine - head of scouting. But with their track record so far, it looks to be a very promising future for the Sabres.
I'm looking at 2 years before we begin to see results. And if we can get McDavid in 2015 (I know Darcy's shooting for him), we'll be a contender within 4.
Full Marks to Darcy once again!
build a team on draft picks alone. You need the veteran support and good mix of younger and older. This is where Darcy fails miserably. He can't lure many decent veteran players to Buffalo at all. Most do not want to come here.
This "rebuild" is a joke. Regier should do the right thing and resign for the good of the organization.
Poor Matt Moulson
.... he gets stuck in Buffalo - at least he can look towards free agency and getting out of there. Vanek finally gets his wish and gets to leave the rat trap and now will play with Tavares.
Call me fickle:
43 years, one cup finale appearance, The French Connection, and 0. Were's the walmart guy, could use a blast right now.
Re: The way Darcy is trading, this could be a very fast rebuild.
How in the world do you manage to combine "fast rebuild" with drafting first overall TWO drafts from now in 2015? Which is it? And how exactly do YOU know that Darcy is trying get McDavid? Really, you know this how? Here's a better prediction: the Sabres will hoard picks and mis-fire on many of them as per Regier's miserable drafting history, in four years the Sabres will look like Calgary and Edmonton who still haven't found their way and Pegula via Ted Black will STILL be talking in circles with some people still falling for all this rubbish. Clearly, you also seemed to have missed that Calgary had THREE first round picks in this past draft. How're they doing?
The way Darcy is trading, this could be a very fast rebuild.
Nope. Darcy will select more finesse Euros, not the gritty North American kids that are needed for the NHL. This isnt the KHL or Swiss Elite League. Way too many soft Euros on this roster and soft players in general.
what took so long??????????
I kept checking WGR550.com about the trade but it took about 2 hours to post something. I found the trade on TSN, way before the home town station. Whats up with that???
thats the way you do it. you got what you wanted, thomas got what he wanted. i would like to thank vanek for the push he gave our team. the players that left buffalo are doing good also. as a fan i just wanted them to go somewhere. where they might a chance to win the cup. just like miller, need to be on a team that making a run at a cup. before their career is over. that what counts. but life moves on. so will the sabres, so will the players. it going to feel funny not to see them here. but good luck to all the players who have lefted. remember you always going to be a sabre in heart. lasted shouted for vanek. get em ruff buff
We're not finished yet
NEXT: Miller, Stafford, and Ennis. Hurry!!! Extend Moulson ASAP if he works out. Vanek should be excellent now that he has a STAR #1 center to play with. Expect 50 goals this season.
Darcy panicked in my opinion...why trade Vanek now when you could have received a much larger package at the trade deadline. Yes you are taking a chance that Vanek gets injured, but isn't being a sports GM a game of chance anyways? A better packagethan you got for Pominville is not out of the question at the trade deadline this year. How many GM's are afforded to fix their mistakes as many times as Darcy has? He has turned over this roster more times than Jeremy White changes his underwear :D
Excellent Return Darcy!
Rebuild is always painful! Darcy got the Best return for a player who wanted out of Buffalo! I do not like the pain of rebuild BUT if it results in a long range winning competitive team so be it! I support the plan! I support Darcy! I support Pegula!
I wanted Darcy fired as much as anyone but I have to give him an A on this one.
Waterbug for a damselfly.
It didn't have to be this way....
Yes, this trade looks like a great deal. Load up the draft pick cupboard and remove parts that won't stay. (By the way, don't count on Moulson staying, he is more trade bait for picks (seeing a second and third or fourth for Moulson at the deadline)). Miller and Stafford (god willing) and even Ennis will likely be next. However, the last ten years prior to the '11-12 season were nother but one consistent blunder after another for Darcy. What he is doing now could have been avoided but he was working towards mediocrity for those years. Many other teams do not hit complete rock bottom in order to turn their club around. The Canadiens were bad and they did a complete rebuild in the administration, including their GM. They are building through their draft, but not forgetting other professionals that they can get through free agency to help the team be successful at the same time. As a fan base we have been led by the nose to be forced to suffer and rebuild. I daresay that there are few other teams (likely none) in the league that would have kept their GM through another rebuild.
Did Darcy get a lot for the Vanek trade? Yes. Did it have to come to this? No!
Lets dump the rest of the "Core" now.
Why stop here, lets continue and get rid of Miller and Stafford, that will rid us of all the original "Core" guys and we can start fresh. Might as well throw the "glass man" (Leino) in there as well as he has definitely not lived up to his salary.
Moulson will be traded at deadline
This is a great deal since we can still trade Moulson at the deadline. Also Moulson has been an Ironman only missing one game in his past 300 or so. We cant say that about Vanek so this is a big Risk for Islanders.
are we actually rebuilding?
I must admit, not a bad deal. Still worry about Darcy's planning ability... okay, wake me when we're a passable team again.
Oh, and Thomas, good luck- you're on a team that can make some noise now.
Man there are a lot of homers.
How do you people think this is great when the person who ruined the Sabres is still in charge? My son who is 5 yrs old said that Myers stinks and is not that good and he is his favorite player. 5 year old kids are getting sick and tired of losing and their favorite players. SMH.
Vanek wasn't staying
Vanek was not resigning so this is an excellent deal. Vanek is a good player but I believe the Sabres would have been better off overall letting him go to Edmonton originally and getting the draft picks then. They now need to move Miller and Stafford andplay all the kids as much as possible. Can the season really get worse by trading Vanek? I don't think so.
I'm sorry to see Vanek go. He was an all around good guy, and a very good hockey player. Apparently he did not want to be a part of the Sabres near future. I wish him the best of luck and hope his career flourishes. It was a very good trade forthe Sabres. They even have the opportunity to trade Moulson before the deadline for additional picks.
My opinion on this breaking story
I don't like it. I'd rather have a new GM and coach in place and I'm sticking with that. Rest my case.
Do you people realize that you are praising Darcy for making this trade when he is the same guy that got us into this mess in the first place. Lets review shall we. Leino 4.5 yearly, Stafford 4.2 yearly, Myers made 10M last year, Ehrhoff made 8M in 2011. How about signing Hecht when we needed that one player to get us over the hump? Or Neidermeyer the year before that. Think he drafts well? Funny, we dont have 1 all-star on our team? His complaint was he never had the financial faculties to build a winner, now that he has had that for 3 years we are rebuilding LOL!! please remember that the year before Pegula bought the Sabes the salary cap was 55M, and the Sabs were at 51M. The money was there, he just used it on the wrong players.. Even a fool could see Staffords production was a bi-product of playing alongside Vanek and Pommer, yet he shelled out 20M to a complete underachiever that only plays hard after he gets benched. I have nothing but disgust for this franchises decision to keep this incompetent fool running this franchise. .
They could have traded him and others for a case of Molson's.
Until the get a NHL Caliber Coach and a GM that doesn't think that a bunch of 1st round draft picks instantly make a Championship team this team is destined to be the laughing stock of the NHL. Mr. Pegula and company your little toy you bought a couple of years ago is broke.Throw it away and find someone who knows how to build a new one and bring some respect back to this organization.
Hamilton on this AM show
Have another cheeseburger!!! If Moulson does good, they better give him an extension. Hamilton already has Moulson going via UFA. I don't believe anything Hamilton says. What an idiot! I think WGR needs a complete overhaul. Rebuild with a whole newstaff with knowledge. Can all the shills.
Miller considering waiving no trade to Edmonton
Sources in on it. More to come...
I hate Darcy, complain about him on here all of the time
It's awful to see Vanek go, but the truth is that he was never going to re sign with Buffalo. Unlike the Briere and Drury exodus, this time he got something for Vanek and actually pulled in someone to backfill the roster to hold us over. Do I think Darcy should stay around long term? No. But this was a really good move.
Full marks to Darcy again???
Do you even watch hockey? Have you ever played? Do you have a clue? Do you want to buy some ocean front property in Florida cheap. People can not possibly be this mislead. If you have a business and it fails year after year is it a healthy business? If you file bankruptcy after year 17 does the business get "full marks".. unreal!
Good trade but once again it's the same Dummy picking the players
Yes that is good value for Vanek since he wasn't going to sign here. But once again, it's the same guy picking. First round busts: Novotny, Ballard, Stafford, Zagrapan, Perrson Meyers, Ennis, Kassian, Grigorenko, . 2nd round busts include: Fabry, Funk, Gogulla, Weber (league leading -12 rating), Brennan, Schiestel and jury still out Luke Adam. Open your eyes people, it doesn't matter how much money you have when drafting.
I'd bet Enroth to be in net vs Dallas
What a better setting it would be since Lindy Ruff never had any confidence in him. Imagining the revenge Enroth would have and the Sabres beat Dallas. If Rolston starts Softee, I'll go ballistic. Get Miller out of here next!!!
Reminds Me of Quebec and Lindros
The Sabres are accumulating as many first / second round picks as Quebec got when they sent Lindros to Philly, especially if they trade Miller, which I believe they will. Nice work Darcy!
Realistically . . .
. . . exchanging the older players who have some value for draft picks may be the best strategy for the Sabres under the present unpleasant circumstances. But draft picks--even high draft picks--are not the automatic cure or inevitable panacea that they're touted (especially on the morning show) to be. True transformational players--LaFleur, Lemieux, Crosby--come along once a decade. Next-level superstars show up more frequently, but by no means yearly. The quality of top players varies considerably from draft to draft, and 2014 is already thought to be a very weak draft year. Consider the teams that have had multiple top-three draft picks since 2000. Atlanta had 4, Florida had 4, Columbus had 2, Edmonton had 3 number-ones in a row. But those picks didn't bring much success. After the top three, it becomes even more hit-and-miss. Ted Black may brag about all the picks the Sabres have stockpiled but most are second-rounders and, unlike in the NFL, second-round picks tend to have little real value except to fill out rosters. Only 25 percent of players selected in the second round will even play 200 games (two-and-a-half seasons) in their career. Almost none of them will be difference-makers. Alexander Daigle was a first overall, and so was Patrik Stefan. Dave Chyzowski was a second-overall. Alexander Svitov was a third and Jason Bonsignore was a fourth. Though draft picks may offer a possible way out of the present mess, they are not automatic tickets to playoff success.
If this were a different GM making this trade and beginning the rebuild, I would be excited. Instead the same man who is convinced Drew Stafford is a 40-goal scorer in this league, the same man who thought that signing Leino to play center was a great idea, the same man who things employing John Scott is a reasonable strategy, the same man who mishandled the Briere-Drury fiasco, is the one that gets to try again? No one should be afforded the kind of job security he's being given.
hope vanek stills likes our state
goodluck buddy sad to see you leave this wonderful hockey heaven of a club.been a buffalo sabres fan from day one and to see whats happen to us is a crime they ran you ruff and others to the ground once they see you guys unable to stand alone its over .instead of keeping hockey and i mean real players or coaches they ran back down to the bottom of the hill in which we all have to follow being a true buffalo sabres fan as we all are.one last word i hope when you return back to play a game in hockey heaven expect same as pommer nothing except the other locker room.
The only way . . .
. . . the Sabres will have a shot at McDavid in 2015 is to be the worst team in the league next year too (or be nearly worst and hope for some lottery luck). But two more years of failure and ridicule will kill much of whatever flicker of spirit and promise the present young players have. The Pegulas and their "we-know-better-than-everyone-and-who-are-you-worthless-slugs-to-dare-question-us" hubris and arrogance have given us a laughingstock team for the present, and a monstrous, ugly, architecturally laughable (but cash-generating) parking ramp that will defile a unique and promising piece of downtown property far into the future.
I can't believe someone here said Darcy is one of the best in the business. You must be talking about some other business.
Only in Buffalo
The hockey team is in a perpetual rebuild mode, keep lying to the gullible fans. Sabres "C" means one foot over the door step. And being the best player in this team means you will go elsewhere soon. This all means: the Sabres = a Farm team for the NHL teams. Run by Regloser, owned by Pegloser.
Thanks for everything. You've been a great Sabre and a classy individual. I wish the best for you and your family.
You people must be forgetting that Darcy has been rebuilding for the last 6 years.. and this is where it has gotten us. By the time our 2014 picks hit the NHL ice, our current talent and prospects will be long gone. Seems its groundhog day again in Buffalo.
Why has it come to this?
Why are we excited about the value they got for Vanek? I remember being excited about the up & coming star when they drafted Vanek. Regeir has run this team into the ground & has everyone thinking we should be happy to be trading the players we were happy to have in the first place. This is the team he built after 16 years of below average planning. This is sad, I wanted to watch these guys win a championship now we have to start all over again. It was good value for Vanek but why did it have to come to this? Why will no one show this clown the door? 3 different ownership groups & still he is here! What gives?!?!? Until he is gone it is only going to get worse. STOP giving this team your money! STOP NOW!
De Ja Vu
Let's see, first they were gonna rebuild a team around Satan and then scratch that we're gonna build a team around Vanek. Now who are we gonna build a team around.I won't be surprised to see Ott out the door next.It seems like who ever gets the big C on their jersey is out the door within a year anyways.
Put a rush on it
EXTEND MOULSON NOW!!! We got a good player in this trade.
