One of the best stories in the 2011 NFL Draft just rolled through the doors here at the NFL Scouting Combine, as 26-year old Baylor offensive lineman Danny Watkins met with the media for about ten minutes.
Watkins grew up in Kelowna, British Columbia, worshipped the Vancouver Canucks and watched Hockey Night in Canada constantly. He grew up a hockey player, but then had to give it up once he hit the 270-pound mark.
His initial introduction to football? CFL highlights after Canucks games. And he's about to be a professional football player.
Watkins went out to California to chase a Fire & Science Technology degree, became a firefighter in the mean time without ever playing football. One day, the coach of his community college asked him to walk on. He did, and the rest is history.
Watkins is widely considered as one of the top guard prospects in this year's draft. When asked about his age playing in negatively, Watkins responded "Well, I don't have arthritis." Zing.
I encourage you to listen to all of Watkins interview. He's a hockey guy playing football. Like I said in the title, the man after the heart of Buffalonians. Audio below.
