Upon hearing that an acquaintance of mine had discovered a great box of old baseball cards, a friend asked me what I thought the best part of that would be. Would it be the discovery itself? Or, the research to find out the value of the cards? Maybe it would be just looking at the cards? Or maybe it would be getting paid.
I found this a near-impossible question. Every moment of such a discovery would be thrilling. I'd love to evaluate each card, analzying every detail. There probably would be some agony ("Mickey Mantle has a crease!") and some ecstasy ("It's the Pancho Herrera error card!"). I'd love the range of emotions. I'd love to talk strategy: Which cards should we keep, and which should we sell? Which cards are likely to appreciate, and which are not? Which cards should be graded?
Usually this sort of discovery happens when someone's parent or grandparent downsizes, or dies. Some people have boxes of old things that they haven't touched for many years. I'm pretty sure there is no such card box in my family; my mother didn't collect cards, and my father never really cared for sports. So I guess I'll have to live vicariously through my friends.
