Amherst, NY (WGR550) -- The Sabres announced today that Tyler Myers "will remain with the team for the foreseeable future." General Manager Darcy Regier spoke with the media following the decision this morning at the Amherst Pepsi Center.
Regier said he and head coach Lindy Ruff met with the 19-year old defenseman this morning to let him know of the decision. The GM said there was "less debate [about Myers' status] as it got closer to the ten games...mostly because of his play obviously." He added the front office was aware of the blue liner's talent level going into training camp.
Ruff also met with reporters and said Myers is "a little bit beyond his maturity when it comes to his play on the ice." The head coach believes the coaches still have to work with Myers to continue to help him improve. Coaches James Patrick Brian McCutcheon are working with the rear guard through exercise drills as well as on-ice drills, according to Ruff.
Now that teams have seen Myers in game action Myers is going to face tougher challenges as well. Ruff said that is another aspect in the teenagers growth in the NHL.
The 19-year old was excited to receive the news from the front office. Myers isn't satisfied just staying with the team, adding his growth as a player won't " to stop after ten games." He knows the toughest tests still lay ahead, and he looks forward to the chance to "show that I can build as the schedule gets tougher."
Myers also said he has kept his emotions in check, not trying to be too excited at the news. He added that by the same token, he can't get too frustrated when he makes mistakes. He's trying to take things "day by day" for now, trying not to get overwhelmed by all of the attention he has been receiving.
Myers has been living in a hotel since staying with the club out of training camp. The 6'8" d-man said he is going to start "house hunting" and look for somewhere to live in Buffalo now that he will stay with the team.
Myers is still eligible to be returned to his junior team, the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. As a 19-year old with junior eligibility left, Myers is not able to be assigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates.
Practice notes...The Sabres are practicing today at the Pepsi Center but Tim Connolly and Paul Gaustad are not on the ice. Adam Mair is skating in place of Connolly. Ruff gave Gaustad and Connolly the day off to rest. The team hosts the Tronto Maple Leafs at HSBC Arena tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

YES!
Somehow I don't think this decision was as hard as the Sabres management made it seem.

Whoo Hoo
Thank goodness!! I am sooo excited to see this kid develop. He is such a smooth skater. I can't keep my eyes off of him when he is on the ice. He will be an amazing defenceman for years!
10/29/2009 12:21PM
Yeahhhhh
Yeahhhhh

10/29/2009 12:52PM
Allll Right!
Finally Buffalo a Buffalo Team making right choices!
10/29/2009 12:54PM
NO!
oh great now he'll be a free agent at a earlier date! Fire Regeir!
10/29/2009 1:08PM
destroying his future
we all see what can happen to a young QB when forced into action. these actions will have permanent damage on this kid!
10/29/2009 1:16PM
RE: NO
SHUT UP! You are probably one of the idiots who yell SHOOT all game long when one of the players has 3 guys in front of him huh?
10/29/2009 1:19PM
Nothing wrong..
With his number stupid idiots...who cares what number he has, he chose his number its not given to him
10/29/2009 1:52PM
good news
The fact is, he did well enough to earn a spot on the team. He deserves to play every night, as long as he continues to play the way he has. This kid is exactly what buffalo needs on d. Brian Campbell o from the back, but can actually play d as well
10/29/2009 2:01PM
selfish people
now we have to pay this kid big bucks! Easy to say for you people, it's not your money!
10/29/2009 2:02PM
Myers
Great move. This kid deserves to be here. And for all those up in amrs about his development....did Crosby and Ovechkin going into the NHL have negative effects on them? Considering the Penguins have the cup, and Crosby has gotten BETTER I don't think so. In regard to free agency, that is years away.

Time to order my jersey!!!!!!
10/29/2009 2:15PM
that's it
kids like this need the seasoning of the minors, as soon as he slumps his confidence is shattered & he's done here, a selfish move
10/29/2009 2:34PM
RE: that's it
Brilliant, lets send our best defenseman to the minors for "seasoning". He's made a few rookie mistakes and he bounces right back on the following shift.
10/29/2009 2:43PM
Thank God -----
This kid had no business going back to juniors .... Let him make some mistakes w/the big club, if he has any ... How do you send back your best d-man? Sending back to juniors makes no sence at all, he has already proven he can play at that level ... Smart move !!!
10/29/2009 2:44PM
shocker
the decision to keep this guy was about as difficult as deciding whether or not to re-sign dmitri kalinin.
10/29/2009 2:52PM
myers
Did they really need to even think about keeping him? 2 goals 3 assists and he's logginf big ice time minutes. This kid is a stud and should start every game the rest of this season. Trade Lydman!
10/29/2009 3:19PM
surprise
what a surprise that a buffalo team doesn't take the cheap way out!
10/29/2009 4:14PM
scorrrrrrrrrrrrrrre
good move darcy you finally listen to all the true fans. go sabres!
10/29/2009 4:14PM
re: that's it
how many times does it have to be said, he isn't old enough to be sent to the minors!? it was juniors or nhl. If you knew anything about hockey and even followed juniors at all, you would have watched this kid in juniors and realized he's already dominated in the juniors. MVP awards, World juniors, stats skyrocketed from the year before. Another year in juniors would not be better for his development.
10/29/2009 4:15PM
lol
"we all see what can happen to a young QB when forced into action. these actions will have permanent damage on this kid!"
Because playing quarterback and being an NHL are so much alike lol.
Myers is the man!
10/29/2009 4:26PM
NO CHOICE
The Sabres had no choice but to keep Myers with the team. Is there another defensemen on the team that is this GOOD!!!
10/29/2009 5:07PM
Re: myers
Not trade Lydman.
Trade Suckera.
10/29/2009 6:01PM
lol
By the way its not your money either. Can we stop worrying about what is going to happen three years down the line and just worry about friday night vs Toronto. Holy crap, can Regier do anything right, I guess not with some of you people. Your not the person saying shoot the puck with three people in front of the player. Your the guy saying shoot the puck from behind the net, give me a break and give them a break..
10/29/2009 7:02PM
re: surprise
Not saying the front office doesn't have it's problems but please no more talks of them being cheap. They are less than 2 million under the cap (1.1 I think but not sure if that's precise). They were against the cap the year they won the Presidents Trophey too. They just pay or overpay the wrong guys pretty often and then they can't get rid of them and bringing in big name free agents is never likely because of this.

MIller Interview
I clicked on your link to listen to the Ryan Miller interview with Howard Simon. Something must be wrong with it because in between Howard speaking all I could hear was paint drying.
10/29/2009 8:01PM
re: LOL
This kid belongs in the Minors for seasoning. It's not your money that has to pay him, that's it i'm giving my season tickets up, i can't stand here and watch this kid get ruined d/t your selfishness!!
10/29/2009 8:38PM
vanity of Quinn
this move is a direct reflection of the vanity of Quinn, this kid isn't even shaving yet! My God man
10/29/2009 8:43PM
editing
I don't know who types these articles, if its Paul Hamilton or someone at the station. But try proofreading. It looks extremely unprofessional when you type "Tronto" and say Myers' growth as a player "wont 'to stop after ten games.'" It's like this in every article.
10/29/2009 10:39PM
Myers
I was at the Tampa bay game. He made his teammates look like children with his shootout goal. I can think of some other sabres that could use the development of juniors!!
The kid is hungry and so am I. Vanek and the rest should take note and start earning there keep!!!!
Go Sabres and take the Bills withya!!!
10/30/2009 12:01AM
llindy deserves no credit
he would have had to board himself into his home in Clarence if he'd sent Myers to Portland.
10/30/2009 9:51AM
eh?.
UH just because they didn't announce it three days earlier doesn't mean they were still considering sending him down... it just means they were following their own deadline, not the media's. Not against the law.
10/30/2009 12:07PM
what choice did Linda have
He could never have shown his face again in public if he hadn't.
10/30/2009 3:38PM
Future
this is the kind of guy you build a team around. strong, tough, physical, and intelligent. he has already been a major reason for our success thus far this season.
